Emma Roberts Heads to Netflix for Ice Skating Series

Emma Roberts is spinning out! At least, she will be in her new Netflix series.

Variety reports that Roberts has snagged the lead role in an "edgy" new ice skating drama, Spinning Out, for the streaming site. Roberts will play Kat Baker, "an up-and-coming, high-level single skater who's about to turn in her skates after a disastrous fall took her off the competition track. When Kat seizes an opportunity to continue her career as a pair skater with a talented bad-boy partner, she risks exposing a fiercely kept secret that could unravel her entire life. On and off the ice, Kat and her new partner will face daunting odds, injury to body and soul, financial sacrifice, and even potential mental breakdown on their way to realizing their Olympic dream."

Disregarding the fact that there's a Christy Carlson Romano movie with a strikingly similar premise, this series sounds like it's got potential to be a bit grittier than the synopsis lets on. Roberts' inclusion promises that the "edgy" descriptor is probably an understatement, given the actress' inclination towards raw, often abrasive material.

Netflix has ordered 10 episodes of the new series, though no release date is attached yet.

"In their world of competitive figure skating, the only thing sharper than their skates is their survival instinct. Will she land that triple lutz on the ice...or on your backside?"
