Emmy drama, comedy finalists whittled down

The nominees to be an Emmy nominee are in! The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences yesterday released the shortlists for its top drama and comedy shows for this year's Emmy awards, which will be hacked down to an Emmy-friendly five nominees and announced on July 17.

The drama category welcomes four new entrants into competition--all from cable networks. FX's Damages, AMC's Mad Men, Showtime's The Tudors, and HBO's The Wire are all one step closer to earning their first Best Drama Emmy. Special attention is being thrown toward The Wire, the critically acclaimed drama which concluded its five-season run this spring.

Those four will be joined by six shows that appeared on last year's Emmy shortlist: ABC's Boston Legal, Showtime's Dexter, NBC's Friday Night Lights, ABC's Grey's Anatomy, Fox's House, and ABC's Lost. Heroes, which was a final nominee last year, failed to make the shortlist (the strike-shortened season probably didn't help its cause).

It's a similar scenario on the funny side, with four newcomers to the shortlist. Curb Your Enthusiasm, Family Guy, Flight of the Conchords, and Pushing Daisies will go up against last year's Emmy shortlist finalists The Office, Entourage, 30 Rock, Weeds, Ugly Betty, and Two and a Half Men.

Family Guy will try to be the first animated series to win Best Comedy honors, as it found a workaround to get it recognized in both the comedy and animation categories. The show itself is up for comedy honors, whereas the Family Guy: Blue Harvest special was put in contention in the animation category.

The shortlist nominees will be screened before blue ribbon panels, which will cast more votes to narrow down the list to five in each category. The Sopranos and 30 Rock won Emmys last year for Best Drama and Best Comedy, respectively.

Below are the Emmy shortlist finalists in easy-to-read list form:

Drama
Boston Legal
Damages
Dexter
Friday Night Lights
Grey's Anatomy
House
Lost
Mad Men
The Tudors
The Wire

Comedy
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Entourage
Family Guy
Flight of the Conchords
The Office
Pushing Daisies
30 Rock
Two and a Half Men

The Riches was a great show, but it got cancelled. Terminator TSCC was going somewhere until it went scrambling for ratings but BSG should have at least been nominated. I totally agree with Curb, Lost, Flight, Dexter and finally the Wire getting its due.

Do anyone know who won the comedy award??

Supernatural is missing. They always ignore shows in that genre! They prefer shows with dramas, ppl sleeping with everybody, chick flick moments... blah!

I agree with "akanesaotome" Supernatural is THE best show on television.

but I am not really surprised with the nominations... the Emmy's and all the other award shows have become a popularity contest... that’s why they have almost the same nominees every year, even if the last season of the show sucked...!! :(

I notice that this site has no threading, so no one can reply directly to someone else. It's the online equivalent of everyone speaking at once and no one listening. So, since I had a lot I wanted to respond to, I'll just hit it all at once.

Drama
----------------
Boston Legal: In the wrong category. I watch this show coz it's funny as hell.
Damages: I've never even heard of this show.
Dexter: I don't think they have anywhere left to go with this show, so it may as well win now.
Friday Night Lights: Wasn't this a movie with James Van Der Beek or something?
Grey's Anatomy: Entertaining pap, but not even a good season.
House: Great show, bad season. This show has jumped the shark.
Lost: This show is dragging. It's all played out and they probably will never resolve it satisfactorily.
Mad Men: This isn't even a compelling concept, who cares?
The Tudors: Costume dramas on tv? Really?
The Wire: Just couldn't get into it.

Comedy
-----------------
Curb Your Enthusiasm: I think I saw this once, when it was Garry Shandling's show.
Entourage: Least. Compelling. Concept. Ever.
Family Guy: I think it was better before it was cancelled, but why not?
Flight of the Conchords: I actually have nothing to say here.
The Office: Painful to watch. Every second is pure torture.
Pushing Daisies: This is good, I'm actually surprised to see it on this list, or not cancelled.
30 Rock: Barely watchable, like the last 20 years of Saturday Night Live.
Two and a Half Men: This is like a bad joke. This show shouldn't have made half a season.
Ugly Betty: Comedy? Really? I admit I've watched this, but let's face it, it's a soap.
Weeds: The clear winner.

The Suggestions
------------------------------
SVU: Not even if it aired 20 years ago would this be remotely original enough to be an emmy.
NCIS: Gives new meaning to the term boring. No, wait, that's the usual meaning.
How I Met Your Mother: Entertaining enough, but it's a blatant ripoff of Friends with a narrator.
Battlestar Galactica: Sure, I'll buy that as a drama, but it's also action.
Breaking Bad: Jury's still out on this one.
Cavemen: It shouldn't have been cancelled, but it wasn't worth an emmy.
Desperate Housewives: I stopped watching this when my man parts realized it was just daytime TV.
One Tree Hill: See Desperate Housewives.
Smallville: I kind of wish it had been cancelled so I could remember it fondly.
Supernatural: Decently entertaining, sort of on a level with Reaper, but basically an action show.
Las Vegas: Is that still on? With the bunny girl?
Chuck: Generic action show.
Heroes: This was good for a season. One.
Scrubs: Well, it's seen better days.
Kyle XY: If you like this, you'll love reruns of Seventh Heaven with PIP of Chuck or Jake 2.0.
Bones: I think they sort of killed it with that last episode.
Criminal Minds: What's that?
Californication: I hear it's good, but I can't bring myself to start watching it.
Moonlight:How many times do we need to remake Forever Knight?
Big Bang Theory:Know nothing of it.

In what way does two and a half men deserve an emmy?

How I met your mother is awesome!

Dexter & The wire are on a whole other level, Flight of the Conchords is pure comedic genius they're my pics

There should be a "dramady" category, a place for bones, weeds, ugly betty, desperate housewives, etc.

I'm sad that HIMYM wasn't even on the list

Grey's was crap this season, everybody knows that and sci-fi/fantasy never gets recognized on the Emmy's

yes for Lost and Family Guy

A lot of those shows deserved to be on that list but how come there's not One Tree Hill or Smallville, 2 great shows. I don't think Heroes would've won if it was nominated but it still should've been. I hope Family Guy wins comedy. It's really funny and an animated series (family guy) needs to win best comedy even though there are other good shows nom. for best comedy. Drama will probably go to Lost or Greys because of popularity.

I'm glad that 3 of the best shows on television are on that list (Lost, Dexter and The Wire) The Wire just has to win it.

And Supernatural just has to be the most underrated, underappreciated show ever. Its scary, funny, emotional and action packed all in one go.

GREYSS!! :]
but desperate housewives had an amazing season, i`m sad it didnt make the cut :(

Once again you have to wonder what credibility the Emmy awards have when they don't even put BSG in the Top Ten Dramas. It seems to have no respect for the Sci Fi genre. They need to give the award to House or Dexter to show they actually respected shows with good writing.

@JSM my thoughts exactly.

but BSG is superior in writing, acting, direction and does belong right alongside of Lost,Damages,The Wire, ect and the rest of the superior dramas.

instead of being lumped into the same catagory of Supernatural,Chuck,Moonlight, ect just because of its sci-fi ties.

For drama: Mad Men

For comedy: 30 Rock or Ugly Betty

Okay well I really could care less about any of the drama shows... but for COMEDY I would have to choose The Office or Weeds... both are awesome. But I am upset that my favorite show on air, How I Met Your Mother, isn't on the list!!!!!!! Not exactly surprised though, sadly...

Where is Las Vegas?!?!?!?!?!

v They did, it's called Lost.

Also, people don't seem to know the difference between entertainment and emmy-worthy. Shows like Supernatural, Bones, Chuck, Heroes, etc. may be entertaining or fun to watch, but don't belong ANYWHERE near the Emmys.

Disappointed that yet again BSG is ignored. Heaven forbid they nominate something that's intelligent yet different, brilliant and a stellar cast, with great story telling and directing. :(

i would have liked to see bones and how i met your mother on here and everyone saying heroes deserved to be on here they are crazy i love heroes but last season sucked even the creator said so

Greys Anatomy/House can't decide they both rock and Pushing Daisies

loool...@ the person saying Supernatural is better than Lost.SPN is entertaining thats all, the script cators to Jensen Ackles fangirls and every little thing he says is idolized and quoted. The show has become overly angsty and is 10 miles below(in quality)compaired to the shows that were picked.

v LMAO at bashing quality programs like Lost, Pushing Daisies and The Office yet praising crap like Heroes and Ugly Betty.

House or Grey's & Entourage or Ugly Betty.

Pushing Daisies doesn't deserve to be anywhere near that list. Neither does Family Guy or The Office.

Boston Legal? Pshhh. Lost? You've got to be kidding me.

Heroes should have been on that list...it's better than basically all of those shows listed.

a horray to the nomination of pushing daisies! :D

umm i wish SVU is on here but it is not so i would have to say for Drama House & Grey's Anatomy then for Comedy Family Guy & Ugly Betty

pushing daisies is one of the best show in the entire season, but is never gonna win in the comedy category... what a shame!

Where's BSG on this list, what the frak? I can't stand it any longer, why no nomination, it's retarded. Battlestar Galactica is not a guilty pleasure show, it is "thee" best show on TV, hands down....like theater worthy movie every friday. The Emmy's are stupid!

It boggles my mind that they'd leave off THE best show on television, Supernatural. The superior writing, directing, and acting on this show is head and shoulders above everything else on the list. Yes it is MUCH better than Lost, though what isn't really? And Friday Night Lights? Please say that is a misprint.

Awesome! Lost for drama, The Office for comedy. What!? Grey's Anatomy for Drama, Two and a Half Men for comedy.

Glad to see Heroes isn't there. Season two was really bad, but I always thought season one was way overrated.

Not much in the drama category except for House. But I'm rooting for The Office, Pushing Daisies, 30 Rock, and Ugly Betty in the comedy!! =]
Where is How I Met Your Mother, Gossip Girl, Bones, Heroes, Aliens in America, My Name is Earl, and Scrubs??!!

Very glad to see Pushing Daisies and Dexter on the list, but I really do think that Battlestar Galactica should have been honored. Also, though they never seem to nominate anything that wasn't popular, I would have really loved to see Journeyman on the list. Truly one of the best shows I've seen in years.

The Big Bang Theory of course
The best comedy series of last season...

I really thought that Desperate Housewives would get nominated. Season 4 was better than season 2 and 3.

All the episodes were great but 5 of them were really masterful (episodes 1, 8, 9, 15 and 17)!!!
