Enron director uncovers crime at CBS

The writer-director of the Oscar-nominated documentary Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room has signed a deal to develop a white-collar crime drama at CBS Paramount Television.

Alex Gibney will cowrite and direct the project, which tracks a fictional low-level government official's probe into shady dealings at a corporate giant. The studio is expected to hire another writer and executive producer for the project.

Gibney said he was inspired to tell the tale from events that transpired not just at Enron but also other corporate scandals of recent years, including Tyco and WorldCom.

"I felt that the wild thing about these stories was that truth was stranger than fiction," he said. "At the same time, there's a territory in there you cannot explore in nonfiction that is left to explore in fiction that is exciting to do."

While Gibney is best known for documentary work like Lightning in a Bottle, he has produced fictional fare, including the independent film Brooklyn Babylon and USA Network series The Huntress.

CBS Paramount Television declined comment.
