The forthcoming NBC show Fathom, about mysterious sea creatures who begin showing up in the oceans of Earth, has had a name change. The new show, Surface, will be exactly the same show, except instead of being called Fathom it will be called Surface.
NBC said it changed the name when another company claimed to own the rights to the title Fathom. NBC insisted it was legally clear to use Fathom, and an NBC spokesperson said, "We are completely confident we could go with it if we wanted to." However, in the end, it went with Surface.
The word "fathom" has long been used in entertainment titles, including the films Full Fathom Five and The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms and the Atari 2600 video game from Imagic, titled simply Fathom. The word "surface" has been used less frequently in entertainment.
The show is being written and directed by the Pate brothers, Jonah and Josh, and stars Boston Legal's Lake Bell and Leighton Meester, of Tarzan. It is currently scheduled for Monday nights at 8.
Whatever its name, it sounds like the kind of show that will last almost an entire season.
I also loved Surface and Threshold,I do not see what is so funny about Earl,The Office,Scrubs,ect... Farscape was a wonderful show and Australia showed us that people were interested in Science Fiction. Anyone remember Isac Assimov? BRING BACK SURFACE! ScFi Can and does become reality. Do we really want to sit and watch people make complete as.s of themselves and hurt others for the sake of T.V. and money. I would rather sit around (and do) watch StarTrek The Next Generation on DVD when there is nothing on tv but reality or reruns of CSI or Without A Trace since there is no scfi on this year.
Watched Surface and loved it I am just a bit puzzled as to why there is no season 2. Season one finish was left wide open to continue to answer all our questions. Come on where is season 2 - - We want it now
One of a very few reasons I watched TV last year. The majority of my friends felt the same way when we "surfaced" at each other's homes every week to watch the latest episode. We were looking forward to continuing our weekly parties this year but were saddened to find out its not happening. Please bring it back! I loved all the characters, unlike the characters in Heroes, which began the new season leaving me confused. Surface was awesome! Bring it back!

I really enjoyed the series and hope that you will continue with more it is a suspensful series and I would like to see the rest of the show play out. I am left hanging and wanting more to watch. I would love to know what happens to the survivorsand of course nimrod.
Look, what's Happening with the show? I miss this show very much and I looked forward to the upcoming ones. A friend told me it was cancelled and I was very disturbed okay. Hey please bring the show back it was an awesome and inspiring show. One of the best shows I have ever seen. I would really enjoy it and I know there are many many other people out there that would reaal love it if it was brought back on. soo please please bring it back.
Threshold, and now Surface. Give me a break. Do we really need all the reality TV that replaced the best shows that came out last season? Bring Surface back.

for everyone who knows the comic books, it should be obvious, that this is just a rip off from the original storyline, and to lable it "Fathom" just proves that. it's most likely that NBC is just a bunch of cheap bastards and they didn't want to pay Michal Turner (who created fathom) for his work.<br />

it seemes though, that NBC can avoid this by renaming the chars and the series title. when some of us mortals would try that, we would be called pirates. i hate this world.
Where are the news about a movie, which shall be made with this title? Fathom is a known comic book and they want to bring that to the big screen.<br />

What can I say? I know the comic book and I know that they did'nt want to make a series out of it, so they probably stole the name and the storyline. If I'm right that would be very sad... no new ideas for shows anyway.

Oh come on its jsut a name, do people really have to being in law suits over a name a simple as Fathom?
Fathom is the name of a fairly well known comic book, probably related to that.
People are too sue-happy. It's out of control. People only seem to care about money, it's sad.
