Firefly lands on the Sci Fi Channel

Fans of the cult-hit series Firefly will be pleased to learn that the show has been picked up by the Sci Fi Channel--just two months before the release of Serenity, a Universal Pictures film based on the series.

For the uninitiated, Firefly is a "space Western" set 500 years from now, in a spaceship that cruises the outer borders of the planetary system that humanity has taken as its new home. The crew is made up of rebels who are fleeing persecution by the unified government known as the Alliance.

Firefly made its debut on Fox in 2002 but was canceled before the end of its first season. The Sci Fi Channel will air all 15 existing episodes, including the three that never made it to TV, starting on Friday, July 22.

This is one of the best shows ever. NBC the big boys who run sci-channel need to realize that there are so many sci fi fans now that we alone would support new sci-fi shows on that channel only. Wake up guys. If another network drops a sci-fi show pick the thing up and run with it. It was teh best show and now it is way over. This post is later but maybe the message will make it to some ears that count.

Brilliant! Friends of mine that don't even like sci-fi loved Firefly, this just seems like a no brainer to me. Here's to Sci-fi Channel realizing what they've got and continuing the series. :D

Oh, i love this show! Please say the writers think about continuing the series (although they made a movie :S)...i mean...yes a movie is very good, but it only lasts 2 hours, they need to make something that will last for weeks...THEY NEED TO COME BACK FULL FORCE AND TAKE OVER! Get on some of the "big" channels, show their greatness to the world!!! Go on!!!

Thank you! Thank you! Sci Fi Channel.
This is a great show and deserves a second chance. Boo to fox for treating it so badly. Their loss I guess.

I wish they would bring this show back on the full-time basis. I never got to see the show when it aired on fox; but when I saw the previews for it on the sci-fi channel I just knew I had to see this show. I've been watching the show since it aired on the sci-fi channel and I can't get enough, and I'm not really into the sci-fi thing. So, somebody tell me; what would it take to bring this show back for a second season? Hey, I would gladly help raise the money or whatever it needed.
Nope, the set was completely destroyed shortly after the last EP (OIS) was completed. All that was left was that 'big red button' and the cargo bay door. Sickening isn't it.
The set had to be completely rebuilt for Serenity. It's essentially the same, but there quite alot of differences in the detail it would seem.
There a wealth of info at fireflyfans.net, 'the' best FF website in my opinion.

My son and I rented the first few episodes, loved them and bought the complete DVD. Fox made an amazingly horrible mistake canceling this series. It was well written, acted and directed. Entertaining on many levels.

The show's production infrastructure surely still exists (sets, etc.) not to mention the infrastructure from the new film coming out. If the Sci Fi Channel now owns the property, they would make a terrible mistake not resurrecting this gem of a series. With minor investment, it will be a money maker.
This show was wrongfully cancelled by Fox. Apparently it contained too much creative substance for the network, so they felt it was making the other Fox crap look bad.

I hope they are planning to show these in the order Joss Whedon intended, and not the way Fox aired them. Why a network would chose to air episodes out of sequence is beyond me. Once they did that it was doomed to failure, Fox schedulers take note!

You're right, Hoodster, it has to be Joss...otherwise I wouldn't want it back. I think he is happy doing the movies if the alternative is the show dies. But I can't imagine he would pass up the opportunity to continue his vision of the future on a weekly basis.

I used to be a Trek person, as all other Sci-fi of the day was pretty hokie... now after watching Babylon 5, the SG-1 franchise, and Firely, I believe these shows make Trek look incredibly campy and hokie! Firely, to me, is the best yet. God, how Fox screwed this up. Sci Fi has turned itself into a great network...what a fitting place for Firefly to end up if they come back.
Jul 18, 2005
  • Hoodster48

I really hope you're right. It's a heck of a long shot to hope for.
As for the actors, I don't think there'd be any problem, they'd all jump at the chance, I'm far more concerned at what Whedon would be doing. If Whedon wasn't on board in a major way, it wouldn't be Firefly anymore.

    Jul 18, 2005
  • olshak

This move is entirely about the possibility of a second season.... SciFi is shrewd in business (lokk at what they have done with SG-1, Atlantis, and Battlestar); they are going to wait and see what the ratings are for the run and SciFi, and see what the movie does at the Box Office. If it is successful (which most Browncoats think it will be), I am betting SciFi will go back to Fox and negotiate Whedon out of his death deal with Fox. So in my mind, look for a second season; just don't count on all of the characters being included if the actors are not available... Whedon is way too good a writer to let his vision be dependent on one or two characters.

  • Hoodster48

In reality, there's virtually 'no chance' now of Firefly coming back to TV. Even Whedon himself doesn't want that to happen. He's happier working on the big screen. There are sooooo many legal wranglings that would need to be sorted out. There are detailed threads on this subjetc at fireflyfans.net Just need to be glad of the big screen vers/s
Although I'm in the UK, the US SciFi channel now has an official Firefly promotion site at
http://www.scifi.com/firefly
It's all very good that SciFi is picking up Firefly to re-run, but they themselves should have seen the gigantic potential this show had and could, I believe, have picked it up just after it was cancelled. If that had happened, we could well be watching the 3rd series of this show right now.moreless

Considering that Fox never advertised the original show, and put it DIRECTLY opposite shows that they advertised the heck out of, it's amazing how many people found AND LOVED Firefly. If they had an ounce of sense, they'd have seen that and acted to keep it in production. I only hope that SciFi has more brains, and that the cast and writers can be pursuaded to continue the series with new episodes. I was shocked when I found out about the movie (again, ZERO advertising!) and I'm really looking forward to it and repeats of the old series. KEEP THE FAITH! :)

Finally, Real Sci Fi fans will get to see this!!!! Enjoy it guys, it's well worth the watch!! I'm already a Sci-Fi Friday's kind of girl, and now I will be sure to not miss the 6pm Central time slot (gotta admit Andromeda was really starting to *** beyond words)! Long live Firefly and Serenity!!! Maybe if the ratings are good and the movie does well they can con our man Joss into returning to the small screen. I mean Sci-Fi took over Stargate and look how well that's doing! It's unlikely, but if wishes were horses we'd all be eating steak!

Great news, love this show :D
A new season mainly depends on the ratings, next month is also the start of Sg-1,Sg-atlantis and off course Battlestar galactica so hopefully it can get through this busy shedule and get some high ratings :)

I'm sure this is part of their big push to promote the movie. But I hope there is a slight chance they will consider doing a mini series or bring it back. Or at the very least a couple more films. One can always hope.

I am one of the fortunate few to have already seen Serenity! AND WOW, AMAZING, LEFT ME SPEECHLESS. Tell all your friends, get as many people in the theaters as possible. We can't let this quality of Sci-Fi disappear.

Great series, never given a chance by FOX. If the movie is a big success, and if the show is somehow brought back I just hope it isn't on Sci-Fi Channel, since most people don't get that channel, hopefully if it is brought back (that is a BIG IF) it will come back to a network, and be given the proper respect that it truly deserves.

I believe the actors would be very interested in reprising their roles for this show. I have the book Finding Serenity, which is a truly excellent read by the way, and Jewel Staite wrote one of the essays.

The way she talks about the show you can just feel the love she has for it. Plus, I've read and seen many interviews with the other cast members and you can tell how much they believe in the show. They all have so much love for it and for Joss.

If they have the chance to come back I believe they all will if it's at all possible for them. Let's hope we get another miracle - we are getting a movie afterall. It could happen. :)

We here in the UK are currently enjoying repeats of all the outstanding episodes. And if my thinking is correct I'm sure I read somewhere that there is a new special edition in the pipeline. {pleez dont quote me]

In responce to 'sinesurfer' The SciFi channel (US) has recently bought the rights to show FF in July in it's entirity and in the correct order. SciFi is owned by Universal, the same film company Serenity is under of course. Do you see a pattern forming here. Many are hoping that, if Serenity is big at the box office, SciFi/Universal could finance a new TV series.

I've watched all the episodes three times (in the correct order) since getting the DVDs in late April. I hope that this boosts the Serenity box office and leads to more Joss Whedon created seasons!!!

Good you are not playing the fact police because you are totally wrong.

There are 13 one hour episodes (or 42 mins as the custom is currenly) and the pilot, which if you cut it two is 15 episodes.
Of those only 3 weren't originally shown on fox. However fox didn't exactly do their best, by shifting the episode order around (the order matters) and showing the pilot LAST.
Tsk tsk.

Not to play the role of Fact Police, but there were only 11 episodes, not 15, and only 8 aired on FOX.

This is absolutely INCREDIBLE news!!! It's a miracle that this superbly written and wonderfully acted show has finally found a second home. The suits at FOX were complete IDIOTS when they let this one go. They never gave it a chance. Well...look at where things are now? The fan-base is enormous, the anticipation for the movie "Serenity" is off the charts and Sci-Fi has seen the potential in it!!! Let's hear it for the Browncoats!!!

Don't get your hopes up for a second season! I seriously doubt most of the actors will be available for a second season on Scifi. Quickly off the top of my head... Gina Torres is on an new ABC show Soccer Moms and Adam Baldwin is on FOX's The Inside. Maybe they could get free for a Scifi miniseries or something. Hopefully that would be worth their time.

Firefly - such a brilliant show with a balance of saddness [look how far humanity has fallen] with moments of wonder [River can do WHAT!!]. Joss Wheadon should have taken the concept to the BBC. At least they understand understand SF, just consider the new Doctor Who series that started out great and just got better each week.
