Five Things the Golden Globes F'd Up

That headline thinks there are only five? I count one-two right here...

First of all, I'd like to congratulate all those who DID get nominated for a Golden Globe this morning. Way to go, Glee and True Blood (I guess), and uhhh, shockers 30 Rock and Mad Men.

But let's face it, the nomination list pretty much stinks. What it amounts to is a mixture of critics' hits and the flavors of the month, and it doesn't even cover THAT very well. Here are five things the Golden Globes should be ashamed of:

Including Entourage in any way, shape, or form
I'm not sure why Entourage is still popular and on awards ballots all the time. It's way past its prime. And this season was perhaps its worst. But hey, it's always on the ballot, so why not put it on there again? This spot should have gone to The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, or for God's sake, Curb Your Enthusiasm, which had a fantastic season. But no, we'll give it to a bunch of Hollywood douchebags instead. Go figure.

Excluding Breaking Bad in every way, shape, or form
Unpossible! Not only should BB be in the best drama category (was True Blood's second season really better than Breaking Bad's?), but any conversation about dramatic actors without a mention of Bryan Cranston is totally bunk. Someone at the Globes should write him an apology letter. Same can be said for Aaron Paul.

Snubbing Jim Parsons: not funny
There's one dude in TV whose back is incredibly sore from carrying the weight of television's highest-rated comedy, and that man is Jim Parsons. I'm not going to argue against Alec Baldwin, Steve Carell, or David Duchovny, but picking Hung's Thomas Jane and Glee's Matthew Morrison over Parsons is the crime of the century. Or at least the crime of this morning.

Running Sons of Anarchy off the road
I'm not alone here. Sons of Anarchy was one of television's bright spots this season, and the ratings prove it. The show was basic cable's top scripted show, and it still gets no love. I can stand not seeing it on the best drama list, and I'm not sure any of the macho bikers deserve an acting nomination. But what I can't let go is the total diss of Katey Sagal, who threw everything in her soul on the table as Gemma. From the season premiere to the season finale, Sagal OWNED it.

Shutting out Friday Night Lights
And in the least surprising snub, Friday Night Lights gets zero nominations. A repeat of every year. Do people even remember that this show is on?

What else do you think was overlooked?

  • MoustaphaKasse

I gotta agree with you. Picking Morrison and Thomas Jane over Jim Parsons is a crime against humanity.

    Was "Leverage" even mentioned?

"Cold Case" and "Criminal Minds" are always forgotten. I dn't believe in these type of awards anymore I think there are hidden interests behind the nominations.

As ususal, both Bones and NCIS were ignored. The two most underrated yet highly succesful shows on tv.

The snubs do not surprise me. This is the foreign press, as far as I know, and their tastes are different from Americans. I am also fed up with the Emmys. The only thing I do is stuff the ballot box for the People's Choice Award. That is the only way I can express my opinion.

I 100% agree w/ this article. True Blood and House (the mediocre season five should still count) should have been left off for Sons of Anarchy and FNL (best drama on tv!). Breaking Bad should have found a way in, maybe by replacing Big Love, maybe not.

What about NCIS!!! It is the number 1 show on tv and not a nomination for any of it's amazing cast members!!!!! I would've liked to see someone from Bones on there too!

Friday Night Lights is one of the best shows ever; however, it is never on so it goes unnoticed. I wish another network would pick it up. NBC is on its way out anyway. I also wish another network would have picked up The Unit and Prison Break. They were both excellent also.

Entourage getting nominated is disgrace and Jim Parsons deserves not only a nod, but a WIN!

Not including Brothers & Sisters is a disgrace in any category...it is one of the best shows on TV!!

Matthew Morrison????? I don't think he's ever made me laugh on that show!!! He probably never will now that he was honored over Jim Parsons!

While I do usually disagree with literally everything written on this site, I do agree that Breaking Bad getting shafted is BS, that show is even better then Mad Men imo.

Ah how I laugh every time I come to this site, you guys think your way is the only right way when half the writers on this site disagree about everything. You guys are idiots

Have you guys been watching the same HIMYM that I have been, because to me between seasons four and five there maybe have been eight good episodes and four mediocre episodes. Ever since season three HIMYM manages to take characters that were at one point funny but in a more realistic light and turn them into overblown cartoon characters. Every episode seems to be filler with a few random comedic moments usually performed by neil patrick harris.

Where the hell does Julianna Margulies get off taking an award for The Good Wife, a show that's premise is completely unrelated to it's actual story? And The Closer isn't exactly a ratings smash hit either. Where's Cote de Pablo's Golden Globe for best bonified badass actress in a television series, drama?

I'm glad about the Glee nominations, but seriously, True Blood? Is one of the worst shows on TV. And Anna Paquin is the worst part of it. Well, except for Stephen Moyer as Bill. At least AP is pretty. How in the name of hell in True Blood better than Lost? Or Breaking Bad? Seriously.

I'm a huge fan of Entourage but even I gotta say, this season was terrible. E and Sloan's story arch was wayyyyyy too drawn out and Ari and the other agent's story arch was also wayyyyy too drawn out. The last 2 or so episodes without those constant, nagging story lines were the best of an otherwise horrible season. War HIMYM and BBT!

yeah it's true, it's always the same dumb shows over and over again, which aren't that very good in the first place
too bad Bryan Cranston wasn't even nominated

  • JaCkKbAuEr2424

I'd really like to see It's Always Sunny and Curb Your Enthusiasm nominated. Curb Your Enthusiasm had one of its best years, and Its Always Sunny should just be awarded to make up for all of these years it hasn't even been recognized. It's funnier than half of the stuff on the nominated list.

  • MemnochZERO

Oh man, I was just thinking that yesterday (about Breaking Bad). my guess is they KNEW Bryan Cranston would slaughter any competition in the best actor category so to give the other guys a fighting chance they left him off. Really it's the only thing that makes sense! Also, matthew Morrison is a much MUCH better actor than Jim Parsons, I can see why he's nominated in the comedy section though Will Schuster is really the straight man of Glee. And also, I gotta agree on Katey Sagal in Sons of Anarchy she's a least AS good as Glenn Close on Damages. I wouldn't have objected to seeing Ryan Hurst on there either for best supporting actor in a drama.

HIMYM gets screwed again.. never fail.. I rlly wish these voters would learn there is more on TV than just entourage, 30 rock and mad men.. this is just annoying because there is so many good show son TV that these shows should not make it every year.. they all have bad season. This is one of the reasons i consider the GG a joke now just like half the award shows.. its all about politics and BS that the small guy who is way better gets shut out

Both Jim Parsons & The Big Bang Theory deserve to be nominated. But who cares about the awards! We all know Jim Parsons is amazing on TBBT.

I'm really happy with the nominees.. but I do agree Jim Parsons deserves a nomination. He rocks.

Glee is a great show, but not because of Matthew Morrison. That, and many other screw ups means: Golden Globes = fail.

    Dec 16, 2009
  • noproszecie

Parsons deserves a nomination soooo much. TBBT tries to hard to be an ensemble show and it's clearly not working. They should make Sheldon the only main character, because when they don't focus on him(like the last episode) the show sucks.

    Dec 16, 2009
  • bmill2

Jim Parsons definitely should've had a spot.

Come on, Tim, did you really have to use that term in the headline? I'm disappointed in you. Writers should have larger vocabularies.

I do watch Friday Night Lights and it's great. It's 100% real acting. The characters are well developed and you believe what they are telling and doing. They should deserve better. It's a real shame.

  • kingoffheg

True Blood deserves to win both nominations.

    Dec 16, 2009
  • umair_23

Entourage deserves to be nominated, this season had alot of good episodes, with a brilliant finale.Big bang also deserves to be in there.. and Jim Parsons is probably the best actor for comedy out there. Sheldon is the whole show.

    Dec 16, 2009
  • Llamaland

Agree with Breaking Bad and Jim Parsons. I felt the list was pretty good though.Breaking Bad should've been chosen over House in the drama category.

    Dec 15, 2009
  • Vavires

i agree with TBBT and HIMYM the rest i dont care, MM and 30 rock are overrated

    Dec 15, 2009
  • logossun

No... Sorry, but just - no. Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy are way overrated, even more so than Mad Men. Entourage, this season, decided to expand to other characters and while not being great, it's good enough. I heard good things about Friday Night Lights, but, as you pointed out - does anyone actually watch it? And as for Curb Your Enthusiasm... I think that show fell in your Entourage category of being out there too long... Still, you think Golden Globes are ever going to get it 'just right'? Naw.
