Fox News, 24 producer lean right with satire

Fox News Channel will air the first of two episodes of 24 executive producer Joel Surnow's conservative-leaning satire Sunday night.

If the ratings for The Half-Hour News Hour do well, then the show could become a weekly offering. Two episodes of The Daily Show-like project were ordered last year for telecast in the winter after a 12-minute pilot was developed.

It's hosted by comedians Kurt Long and Jennifer Robertson, and both shows were filmed in front of a studio audience last month in Los Angeles. (Robertson replaces Susan Yeagley, who was the cohost in the pilot but was about to have a child at the time of the taping.)

Surnow said Monday that the show comes from a "right leaning point of view," more so than other shows of its kind.

"We're just going to even out the playing field a little bit and hit targets that we think are hilarious and do it in a very spirited, but warm-spirited, way. It's not mean," Surnow said.

Among the topics discussed on the first show are global warming and Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The producers were conscious of the fact that there would be a long lead time before the shows aired.

"We were very careful to choose issues that were still going to be around" by the time the show aired, said Manny Cota, who developed the show with Surnow and former Politically Incorrect writer Ned Rice.

Just for the record, the Daily Show does attack both people from the right and left, but it is still left leaning. It's quite clear that Jon is a liberal man, not that I have any problem with that whatsoever. This show is not only right leaning, it is completely targeting liberals.

Daily Show > The Half-Hour News HourThe Half-Hour News Hour is not even funny. Just a bunch of racist and lame Ted Kennedy jokes. Besides shouldn't Fox News be airing news not comedy? The whole network is a joke.

Linkinfnpark19 said verbatim: "i dont know how well this will do, i mean the liberals just make sense whereas conservatives are, more often than not, ridiculous" Me: ** Says you pal: Go sensibly self-abort yourself and march that you had the right to. *** I read The Village Voice funnies... they are funny only to the smug, Che Gueverra T-Shirt wearing types. I crack up on their bitterness that pervades their humor. For humor to be funny there has to be some truth to it. Their "truth" is what the NYT manufactures from each day on. If this new Half-Hour One Hour News Show is a bit uneven and dry at times it is because there is very little precedence for this type of show on the right. It will take some time and tweaking whilst they meanwhile get the predictable, panties-all-in-a-bunch crowd to roll their eyes and cross sponsors off their buy list. They still have to be careful about how they poke fun at political correctness while all lefty shows can make fun of whites, all catholics and the very idea of America itself without being afraid of being thrown off the air. They ALWAYS just create their own concept of an pro-American, uneducated and even sometimes a racist character that the scripted wiser, caring, and oh-so-sensitive liberal can play off of and belittle without any real questioning or discussion made possible. This was by design in many shows...the one that first comes to mind is All In The Family where a lefty actor plays what Hollywood's idea is of a conservative man. The only thing they got right was that his son-in-law WAS a Meatball. Some get their news from The Daily Show! I would be equally horrified if people were to do that with this new show. The new "BO magazine" faux ad was a hoot. BO = Barak Obama. Uh-Oh I've been reading this thread... the Canadians are upset as well: Boo hoo. Go put a VAT on a Sunny Day.moreless

The name "The Half-Hour News Hour" just sounds like a rip-off of "This Hour Has 22 Minutes." Typical of FOX to create a satirical news show and snag all its ideas from a (better) Canadian satirical news show.

Also, I just watched the clips. That was the least funny thing I have ever seen. They must have a 2 drink minimum to make those right-wingers laughm at those crappy jokes

The Daily Show isnt liberal. They make fun of whoever is in power. With Bush as president, they make fun of him. When Clinton was president, they made fun of him. With the Democrats in charge of congress, they make fun of them. When the Republicans where in charge, they made fun of them. You dont make fun of the minority. You make fun of the people in charge.

The promo clips suck; not funny at all. Even though they taped it with a live audience, they had to use a laugh track - how ridiculous is that.

Don't people remember the Clinton years? I think there were one or two jokes about him on The Daily Show. Get a democrat in office and see how fast Jon mocking them.

Yeah, the Daily Show isn't actually left-leaning, idiots. They attack EVERYONE.

It just happens to be that the president is a right-leaning moron who invades countries for no political reason, and that the VP is an arrogant git who can't aim a gun.

For the Daily Show to stop attacking the right, they're going to have to stop writing their own jokes.

Global Warming...Even if global warming was debunked, the policy changes legislators persue while citing it as a reason are still appropriate if not necessary. Cleaner air, water, and agriculture are way worth making the same sacrifices for.Or maybe I'm jumping the gun by assuming anyone (represented in this case by 1/2 Hour's staff) would be so stupid as to misconstrue two sides of a scientific debate as a matter of right and left. Let's see where this right-wing tv program happens to weigh in. You know where my money is. In fact, I'll narrow it down to a Chicken Little reference or parallel.
