Fox offers free shows on Web

Fox announced today it will stream free content on the Web sites of the TV stations it owns and operates. Web surfers will be able to stream new episodes of Prison Break and Bones, along with old episodes of American Dad, The Loop, Stacked, and others. Toyota Motors has been lined up as the sponsor.

The Fox-owned stations involved in the new Web push are WNYW in New York, KTTV in Los Angeles, WFXT in Boston, KDFW in Dallas, WTTG in Washington, DC, WTVT in Tampa Bay, WOFL in Orlando, WBRC in Birmingham, and WGHP in Greensboro. The network is in talks to offer the service to the Web sites of its affiliates as well.

"The elegance here is not necessarily following in the footsteps of the other national networks with a national strategy out of the gate, but rather to come at this from a bit of a different direction," said senior vice president of Fox digital media Matthew Glotzer.

The move is part of Fox-owned News Corp.'s larger digital media push. Earlier this week, Fox announced it will offer downloadable content for sale on the News Corp.-owned MySpace.com and other Web sites.

The Fox announcement comes a day after CBS stated it would begin simulcasting CBS Evening News on its Web site. Starting September 5, the network will offer a free stream of Katie Couric-led CBS Evening News at the same time it airs on TV.

"Finally, the first network to do this."

Not quite. CBS and ABC both have free streaming episodes online for some of their shows.

ABC is going to continue broadcasting shows for free at ABC.com. NBC has entered into a contract with YouTube to start broadcasting some of their shows. CBS News is the first step for them, but Fox is the last one to enter into this group (unless you consider the CW and My Network TV). The only difference here is it will be at local affiliate sites instead of a nationwide broadcast.
