Fox's The Mob Doctor Has Contracted a Fatal Case of Cancelitis

Fox's The Mob Doctor entered the fall season with a terrible prognosis, and most professional health experts for television programs, myself included, gave it only a few weeks to live. But the little guy soldiered on and defied everyone's expectations despite terrible vital signs of sub-1.0 ratings in the adult demo. Death was inevitable, though, and I'm here to report that The Mob Doctor has contracted an irreversible and terminal case of Cancelitis.

Fox has canceled The Mob Doctor, about a doctor (Jordana Spiro) who works for the mob, eight episodes into its freshman run, according to EW.com. After next week's episode, the final four installments will be left for dead on December 29 and 31 and January 5 and 7. I did have big New Year's Eve plans and was gonna watch the ball drop from the observation deck of the Eiffel Tower, but I guess I have to stay home and watch The Mob Doctor instead (which I'd rather do anyway).

Official word from Frox is that the show isn't canceled, which is technically correct because the network is simply opting to not order more episodes beyond the original 13, but we laymen can use the C-word. The Mob Doctor's vacated Monday 9pm slot will be filled with various holiday specials, Raising Hope, and other things that are way better than The Mob Doctor.

Silver lining to all this? Zeljko Ivanek is now free to appear on some good shows. (And stay tuned, we'll post a Dead Pool update shortly.)

I loved The Mob Doctor! I am so sick of good new shows being cancelled to make room for stupid ones. Now I hear another one of my new favourites is being cancelled. WTH! I'm going to start boycotting TV.

Fox can kiss it! that was an awesome show! The actors were great and the story was awesome. Fox is just going down hill. Mob doctor needs to stay! Who cares about stars in danger, it is probably all fake anyway. Glee is retarded. Fringe has gone down hill, end that show! American idol is just boring now it is old and needs to go. The only thing that is worth watching on fox is Mob Doctor, Bones, possibly The Following and Hell's Kitchen. Simpsons are not the same not funny anymore just dumb, Bob's burger is just creepy, family guy has its days, and American dad is so dumb it makes Glee look good. Why cancel a show like Mob Doctor and not even give it more of a chance when Fringe sucked before it got to the second season. I really want Mob Doctor to stay!

We liked the Mob doc., atleast FOX is showing the final episodes. If you wanted to watch the last 2 episodes of Saving Hope you had to squint at you computer.

I knew this would get canned, surprised it lasted this long. It had the Fox-cancellation seal of approval stamped all over it. Unlike Emily Owens MD which I pulled back out of my Dead Pool due to the CW usually waiting until post-season to cancel, I kept this one in there and it eventually paid off. None of that has anything to do with the qualities of the shows, it's all about business and how these specific networks market and promote, then react when they misfire in those areas.

I am not a fan of medical dramas (except House) but this one is not really a medical drama which started a bit slow but is just getting quite interesting.

I never watched "The Mob Doctor" because I believed it was a bad idea for a series. Apparently many of my fellow television viewers agreed.

I thought it probably wouldn't be any good, but watched it one night and was surprised I liked it. Show kept growing better and better. You should watch one of the shows online and you will be surprised.

I couldn't do it. Too soon after HOUSE. Still sad about that.

Pity, I quite liked this series and I'm not a fan of medical series at all. Couldn't get passed the first episode of Raising Hope. I did ike the medical series 'A Gifted man' which was also cancelled.

Too bad this show never lived up to its potential, especially with so many excellent actors. I would have enjoyed it more if the main character wasn't such a pushover, and her secret association was rarely at risk of being found out IMO.

Wait, Zeljko Ivanek was on this show? Now I may have to force myself to endure it.

Putting the time period and ratings aside, why do a lot of people here think the show is so bad? I know I'm not the only person who really enjoyed Mob Doctor. The premise, as far as I know, has not been done on tv before, the actors were good, and I've said all along, I liked the storyline and after about 3 episodes, I was hooked and really looked forward to this show each week. Comparing it to Grey's Anatomy, for example....I watched the first 6 episodes of Grey's and found nothing interesting at all, and if a show can't hook me in 6 episodes, I figure why continue to watch? Of those that actually gave Mob Doctor the 4 episode trial, what didn't you like about the show and why would it hook some people, like me, and not others?

Honestly, I didn't think it was bad. I felt luke-warm feelings about it: it wasn't MY cup of tea but that doesn't mean I thought it stunk.

I thought it was at least a little interesting and the concept gave them lots of options to explore such as the shades of gray of morality. Treating someone that would literally rather die than go to a hospital (for whatever reason) is a win for a doctor. I mean, an ER doctor will save the life of a known gang banger in the ER even though chances are high that the gang banger will kill someone else eventually. So in my opinion the worst thing about her situation is how it's illegal since treating a gunshot wound (which was a SMALL percentage of the show's plots) meant the cops wouldn't know about it / find the bullet / etc.

And yeh, I'm no way near a doctor... but my understanding is she would NOT be able to just float in-and-out of the hospital endlessly due to the Mob boss's pages

I watched 4-5 episodes and it was all I could take. When it was first announced I thought the premise was thin to begin with.

I'm all for suspension of disbelief when watching stuff, but the amount of times she gets paged and leaves the hospital with absolutely no repercussions was highly implausible to me. Being a doctor is not the same as being on an assembly line or being a cashier at McDonald's, where your whereabouts are kept tabs on, but surely you can't leave the hospital two or three times a shift without someone noticing. Doesn't she have other non-mob patients she's supposed to look after or does she just walk around the hospital all day?

Everybody has different tastes & therefore every show is not for EVERY person. If you enjoyed the Mob Doctor then more power to you, but it struck me as implausible and uninteresting.

Some people loved the pilot of The Munsters. I hated it; was not entertained in the least. Apparently people love The Neighbors. I got a chuckle here or there from it, but it was on my deadpool and I quit after four episodes. Guys with Kids is still on and the only thing I laugh at on there, occasionally, is Anthony Anderson & Tempestt Bledsoe. Beauty & the Beast got a full season order but I couldn't stomach the flat, stale storytelling more than four episodes. I tried to give these shows a chance and they just didn't catch me, though people seem to enjoy them.

It all comes down to what you enjoy, I guess. I'm definitely more of a fan of serialized shows like Awake & Last Resort (RIP x2) than straight procedurals.

That's all, I guess. I just figured I'd give you my two cents about why I personally didn't like. it.

Thanks. I appreciate your reply. Grace did have regular patients as well, each episode, and her colleagues have been wondering where she is sometimes. In the most recent episode, she didn't show up at all to an important meeting. So, this absenteeism was being dealt with in the scripts. Anyway, as you said. different strokes for different folks. Now as far as comedies are concerned, it seems most people here enjoy the comedies of today, whereas I hardly find any of them as good (as funny) as those of the 90's. My all-time favourite comedy is the British version of Coupling. That's the style of comedy that has me on the floor in stitches. What comedy on primetime today has the hilarity of Coupling? Answer: NONE! That's why I don't watch comedy shows this season, except for 2 Broke Girls and that's it!

Expected but very sad news. In my opinion, the best new drama after Nashville. Got better and better each week and reached a point where I watch Mob Doctor instead of Revenge (both aired Sun. at 9pm in Canada). I watch Revenge later and it's just not as exciting as Mob Doctor. Oh well, I'll definitely watch all 13 episodes, at least. Will miss the terrific storyline. Now I'll have an extra hour (actually 2, cos' I watch Emily Owens too) to read good books.

I had Malibu Country on my dead pool too. :( It just seemed so horrible, but with hindsight, that was a dumb reason to put it on there. I should have considered the fact that Reba had a similar show before that was fairly popular. I should also have realized that the lowest rated NBC comedy would get axed early.

It was only in the "this could have potential" stage, but I was also really bummed out when they axed Lone Star so quickly.

They didn't cancel Fringe, when they had every right to do so with its flabbergastingly bad ratings. Even though the cancellation of Firefly (and to a lesser extent John Doe and Terminator) still stings, you can never say they cancel ALL the good shows.

Don't forget their worst crime of all, cancelling Firefly! But no way Mob Doctor is in the same league as these fine programs.

Can Fox even cancel a show, can they even make a single programming decision, without someone raising the "Firefly" issue?
Seriously?
I loved "Firefly" too, I had (have) Nathan Fillion desktop wallpaper, but it has been a decade people! Don't wallow in the pain. As @MichaelJeluso pointed out, there are plenty of other crappy command decisions we can throw in their faces.
But @MichaelJeluso for pity's sake, I will admit I watched "The Mob Doctor" (what? Ken Olin was an exec-producer) but lumping TMD in with the grab bag of sci-fi/action shows you listed as "all the good shows" is stretching the bounds of exaggeration here buddy. One word for you: FRINGE. Here's another: 24 (or is that actually two words?). Plus you forgot "Human Target."

Nope, Fox can't :) It's unforgivable.

But TBH cancelling The Mob Doctor is the soundest decision they've made lately. I just could't allow someone to make a list of "good" shows Fox has cancelled without including Firefly- that would be blasphemy.

I'm not really sure where the decade passing is relevant, except to reinforce the fact that it was a colossal mistake as evidenced by continued popularty. It's not as though they've changed their behavior in that amount of time.

What's your score now, Taccado? You've got to be somewhere around +25. (That's right, folks! You're jealous, aren't you? I know I am). If you've got a good tie-breaker, you just might win this thing.

Made in Jersey: +11 points
Beauty and the Beast: -2 points
Partners: +7 points
Animal Practice: +8 points
The Mob Doctor: +5 (??)
Total: 29 points.

And the tiebreaker: Nashville (After 5 episodes). I'm just happy that I got four out of five.

However, I've found a worthy competitor (today, actually). Her name is jasjamjaz and she is also on a roll. Her pool is the following: Animal Practice, Made in Jersey, The Mob Doctor, Last Resort and Malibu Country. Tiebreaker: Elementary (After 3 episodes). Today, before the cancellation of The Mob Doctor, she was ahead of me with one point. We both had Made in Jersey and Animal Practice correct and my Partners (+7) gave me one point more over her Last Resort (+6). But my damn Beauty and the Beast took two points away from me giving her a one point lead.

I realized then that if The Mob Doctor was cancelled (which it was a few hours after I "discovered" her pool), we would get the same amount of points for it and she would still be ahead with one point. So now my pool is done with +29, and she has massive +30, which means it all comes down to her last pick: Malibu Country. If it gets cancelled, she picked 5/5 correctly and will be a clear winner (at least between us). But if it gets renewed, she'll get -2, and her total will be +28 and I win. It's a close race...

And of course I feel conflicted. If there is one show on TV that deserves to be cancelled, it's Malibu Country. But at the same time a renewal would mean jasjamjaz stays behind me in points. (DISCLAIMER: I don't take the Dead Pool as seriously as it might seem judging by my (mild) gloating and long comments.)

That's impressive but unfortunately not enough. And now with cancellation of Emily Owen and the back 5 of Malibu Country, the dead pool is completely over.
My final score
MADE IN JERSEY: +11 points
ANIMAL PRACTICE: +8 points
PARTNERS: +7 points
LAST RESORT: +6 points
MOB DOCTOR: +5 points
Total : 37 points

Congrats, DraicKin5! An amazing result considering this year's what could be called peculiar renewal extravaganza. Near perfect, the maximum score this year was 39! (11+8+7+7+6)

The biggest difference is between cable and network. The shows you mentioned as having more episodes are all on network television (CBS, NBC, Fox, CW, ABC), while the ones you mentioned with lower numbers are on cable television (Syfy, TNT, HBO, AMC, FX, etc.). Networks have a lot more money, cable has a lot less... so often times, network shows can have twice as many episodes per season as most cable shows. Both cable and network channels also base episode numbers based on their potential schedule and the total number of shows they want in their schedule for that year.

Another variable is the type of show it is -- low-maintenance, high-maintenance, high-concept, procedural, serial, sitcom, animated, etc. -- because that clearly affects the budget and cost.

It also depends on whether it's a new show or not... if it's not, how many season it has under it's belt... the ratings it often gets or is projected to get... the love it may or may not get from advertising companies... etc.

as far as I understand -these will be just a set of assumptions- for the new shows, they start with either 10 or 13 (which I simply assume because it is 1/4th of a year) and if everything goes well they order new, depending on how well it goes.. if a little well they make 10 to 13, 13 to 15, ordering just 2-3 new episodes to see how it goes.. if the show is much more promising than it moves up to 18-22.. for the already existing shows it generally is 21-24 or 10-13 depending on when the show starts (summer and midseason shows tend to get short seasons) or I think if it is cable or national network.. and then there is seperated season shows which begin in summer, air 10 episodes, and continue with 5 more in the winter (this is more of a TNT thing as far as I see)

But it's too bad Cancelitis isn't contagious. If it was, I'd love for The Mob Doctor to hork some phlegm in the direction of B&tB, Guys with Kids and the various other shows that didn't deserve full season orders this season. Also, Whitney (I've always said it's never too late to cancel a bad show ... seriously. It's like my motto).
