Friday Afternoon Distractions

Whiling away your last few hours at work? These videos should help make time fly extra fast!

We know Australia Day was two days ago, but in light of unions calling for the national holiday to be celebrated for a week (and the fact we don't have a "Wednesday Afternoon Distractions" feature) -- we're running with it! In this cute, quirky ad for Air New Zealand, cheeky Rico the squirrel puppet (muppet?) wishes us a happy Austraila Day and hopes we "enjoy putting our crickets and throwing our mates on the Barbie doll."

In another Australia Day-themed commercial, The Comedy Company's Con The Fruiterer (Mark Mitchell) is seen here spruiking dribblicious stonefruit, declaring January 25 "Summer Stonefuit Day". We're guessing he's on-board with the week-long holiday suggestion?

If you're watching season five of Dexter, check out this 60-second parody of one of our favourite programs. If you're behind -- shame on you! Just kidding, but beware of spoilers!

Did you know that Ellen DeGeneres's birthday is on Australia Day? Well it is. And to celebrate her special day, Pink dropped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show to gush over the charismatic talk show host. We wonder if Ellen and her Australian better-half Portia de Rossi include any Aussie themes in their festivities?

And possibly the best Australia Day gift for Socceroos fans was the squad's 6-0 win against Uzbekistan in the Asian Cup semi-finals! Those who stayed up until 5am to watch the victory live on TV were definitely not disappointed and are now more geared-up than ever for Sunday morning's 1:30am kick-off as we face Japan in the final. Wouldn't it be great for Australia to be the champions when we host the 2015 Cup?! Special shout-outs to goal-scorers Harry Kewell and Brett Emerton, as well as Tim Cahill who was absent due to injury but has now been cleared to play on January 30. Phew!

And a sneak peek to wrap up the week -- Toni Collette will narrate new animated series The Gradual Demise of Phillipa Finch which chronicles title character Phillipa Finch's troublesome love life. The series premieres 10pm Tuesday February 15 on ABC1.
