Poor Alt-Broyles. Just as we were getting to know him, he went and got himself killed. As we discovered in last night's episode of Fringe, Alt-Broyles (Lance Reddick)—or Colonel Broyles, as he's known in the Red Fringe Division—played a much bigger role in the Red Universe than Special Agent Broyles (Reddick) does in the Blue Universe. "Entrada," as well as the episodes leading up to it, revealed that Alt-Broyles and Walter (John Noble) actually shared many similar traits; for example, both men risked their lives for their sons' safety and wound up damaging their own universes in the process. And both of them struggle with personal demons: Walter was in a mental institution for 17 years and, in "Entrada," we saw Alt-Broyles take several swigs of booze. They also each have a deep connection with Olivia (Anna Torv), immerse themselves obsessively in their work, and appear to be benevolent at their cores.
Which begs the question: If Alt-Broyles and Walter have so much in common, then do Special Agent Broyles and Walternate (Noble) also share traits? I think it's fair to say that Walternate has some pretty malicious intentions, and I've always had a sneaking suspicion that Broyles isn't an inherently good guy. He cares about his team and his work, but he's never really bothered to get to close to anyone but Nina Sharp (Blair Brown)—another questionable Fringe figure. Would it be too much to say that Broyles has equally malicious intentions in the Blue Universe, just like Walternate does in the Red Universe?
And let's talk about Peter (Joshua Jackson) for a second. I liked Suspicious Peter. He figured out that the girl in his bed was not the girl he wanted in his bed, and the instant non-chemistry between Peter and Fauxlivia (Torv) was impressive. But while Peter went immediately from loving Fauxlivia to hating her, Fauxlivia's feelings seemed much more ambiguous. After the reveal, she made mistakes—she took the wrong computer, she tried to fool Peter by holding a shapeshifter hostage, she even got arrested. Is Fauxlivia dumber than we think? Is she blinded by actual love for Peter? Or is everything still part of Walternate's plan?
Despite these unanswered questions, "Entrada" was Fringe at its finest—this is one of the few shows on television that can get even more thrilling and less frustrating when there are still lots of blanks to be filled in.
"Fringe" notes:
… I liked seeing the opening credits switch between red and blue, to foreshadow that the episode took place in both universes, but I would have loved them if the whole sequence had been purple.
...Maybe I've been watching too much of The Walking Dead, but Alt-Broyles' combusted corpse looked kind of like a zombie, didn't it?
… That portrait of a gray-haired JFK on Walternate's desk was trippy.
… The guys from The League should seriously consider watching Fringe. Walter saying "vagenda" ranks right up there with such gems as "roster-bation" and "anticip-erection."
… How did Olivia manage to cross over to the Blue Universe so quickly this time? Doesn't it normally take more time and energy?
What did you think of "Entrada"?

She was able to cross over faster because she injected herself with that Cortexafan ( or whatever it is called) SOOO it was easier for her..
yeah, I also got myself wondering how Olivia managed to cross to the Blue Universe and actually remains there, instead of "dropping" back to the Red one, as happened before. That looked rather easy, rs, but that's ok =D
What Torrijos said + she might be "getting the hang of it". I'm pretty sure she could do it without any assistance eventually.
This Cross-over was quicker and safer because the other universe managed to produce Cortexsofan.
Will Olivia and Peter pick up where they left it on the other side??? But ignoring the kiss they certainly can not do. I really don't think that she will feel betrayed, how can she..on the other side people thought she was their Olivia too. That Peter was intimate with Altlivia and did not know that it wasn't her, is not his fault. I hope they will not do the obvious choice, play the painfull breakup of something that wasn't even started up, and two people not communicating and hurting inside, but do the opposite and have them love eachother as they did before, am I making sense??
I'm so happy to see that the writers on his show "get it" when it comes to answering questions and moving the story forward. X-Files and Lost used a "create 2 questions for every 1 answered" formula that left so much of their respective stories untold. That said, as a fan of all 3 series, I'm baffled by the notion that Fringe doesn't have an equally strong following.
"Alt-Broyles' combusted corpse looked kind of like a zombie, didn’t it?"Possibly partially because he'd been physically "trimmed" so as to be closer to Faulivia's smaller mass, to better serve as a counter-weight to Faulivia's return.
Oh god please let Tim write all the reviews. Stephanie you suck almost as much as Fringe rules...
surely a great episode and enjoyed watching :)
I giggled when he said "vagenda" :D
Yep the Alias reference was clear, this is obviously because J.J. Is involved with both shows (Actually created both). And by the way.. FRINGE IS FREAKING AWESOME.
I loved the swapping of the Olivias, and all the great Walter-isms. And with the mega-dose of Cortexephan, the fear of being caught, and Olivia's determination to get home, crossing over was easier for her this time; she knew she only had a few seconds to get back to the blue universe. I liked the reuse of Alias-isms with the adrenaline and the exact dialogue from the first episode of season two (Syd and Vaughn in France, Olivia and Colonel Broyles in the orange-ish Statue of Liberty).
one of the best episodes ever.fringe - keep them coming :)
I think the reason she crossed over this fast and permanent this time was because of the fear she was feeling and the dose of Crotexifan (or however its spelled) she got right before going into the tank. And now Im really curious how Peter is gonna explain to Olivia that he actually had sex with Alt-Livia and never even noticed she wasnt the real deal. Probably gonna cause quite a rift between them since he will feel guilty and she will feel betrayed. Which would be a shame because I was really looking forward to seeing Peter and the real Olivia as a couple. Would have been kinda cute. But I guess you cant have everything...
"In the seventies I innocently wandered in the wrong home and it was three days before I realized my mistake. And unlike Olivia the woman I was sharing a bed didn't look like my wife at all."Walters ramblings. You just have to love them!PS: She was able to cross so quick because of fear. Fear triggers her powers remember?
This episode was so freaking awesome!!! TV at its BEST!!!!! Fringe as gone from cool to awesome and now to EPIC!!!! As for Olivia crossing over so quickly, I think it might have something to do with the fact that she was injected with cortexifan.
I think olivia passed over fast because of her fear. Remember fear triggers her powers.
Great episode, can't wait to see what happens next!!!!!!!
When i started watching fringe it was exciting, season 2 was amazing but season 3 has turned me into a zombie, people come into the room when im watching and i hardly notice them. the last two episodes were simply outstanding, keep rockin fringe team
This ep was amazing. I loved the title credits switching between red and blue. Poor Alt-Broyles. I'm wondering if the set up for next weeks show, reanimation, is going to bring Alt-Broyles back? But considering the other universe know he's dead I don't know what purpose it would serve. And yes I don't know how Olivia got back so fast. I know I wouldn't be able to concentrate with all that gun fire going on outside the deprevation tank! But these little things aside... It is probably the most entertaining show on TV right now. And the Friday graveyard - yikes I hope this manages to survive or at least is given a fair amount of warning so it can be wrapped up.
One of two shows I ACTUALLY tune in for. Why it ever left the barren-like Tuesday spot will forever go unknown.
To answer your question as how she did it, they used the same devices from when Walternate crossed over in a previous episode. The device was placed in a triangular formation to move Walternate over. In this episode, the 3 devices were placed inside Altvia, forming a triangle, her hands + back which all resonated just like the prior device. The reason she crossed over so quickly was because they were displacing an object, in this case alternate Fringe Boss, with Altvia. And also, it was localized only on Altvia, so it didn't require a really large displacement area or as much power, making it easier to move her.
I just started watching this show...from episode 1x01 til now and if it were to get canned I would take my TV set to Fox's headquarters and throw it through their front window... oh not really but you get how mad I would be... all the good shows get canned and the crap stays on the air...
A dark purple intro would have been so cool! Entrada is the best Fringe episode up to date in my opinion, and I can't believe I can say that, seeing as The Abducted was already phenomenal (not to mention many others). I just love how the writers are able to top the quality of the previous episode every time this season. Plus, the acting prowess of Anna Torv, Lance Reddick, John Noble, and Joshua Jackson~super fangasmic!
Fringe is really the best show on TV right now. Perfectly written, paced, and acted. I would not be surprised, and I really hope, that Anna Torv, John Noble, or Lance Reddick are nom'd for Emmy's. They certainly deserve it, especially Torv. The subtly with which she acted Fauxlivia and then the complicatedness of being Olivia acting like Alt-liv was great.
Our side got Olivia back, but lost a potential ally on the other side against Walternate, lost the captive Fauxlivia who returned to the other side to no doubt replace Broyles-B...in a bad way, and that piece of the mystery machine still resides with Walternate's minions. That's called one step forward, two steps back for "us"! Great stuff building towards the season ending...I have faith fringe will bust the Friday night curse, but that's up to us!
Loved "Entrada" all the way. It's a darn shame the number of viewers doesn't match the quality of this show. Lots of people are really missing out.
Best show on TV!
Fringe is a great show. It's like a new (and better) X-Files. I can't believe this show only has a small loyal viewing. People just don't know good TV or watch good TV today. And it's because this show is "smart" and not "dumb", and you have to actually be a thinking person and willing/wanting to think.Fringe will be moving aside to Friday for American Idol...That just shows America perfectly today, mindless non thinkers.I saw the next episode is going off story to do another random case. I don't like these "filler" episodes anymore where that show has nothing to do with the deep story. I just want the continual story without any of the "detours" now, the story is too big to be doing this from now on.
OH MY GOD i was totally thinking the same thing about the purple credits! :))
is the show considered for 'cancellation'? all great shows get axed while really lame ones like Vampire Diaries and The Ev3nt gets renewed *sad*
i tried to make my own review recently, writing stuff what i've seen on "Entrada" but it is getting weird than what i expect to happen..there are few unanswered questions rounds on my mind after...
Oh yeah, and everything about that episode was AMAZING. Down to the name, Entrada.
@KevinG87I agree. If Fringe was cut short without a proper ending (or a rushed ending), that would be a freakin' travesty.... In a world where CSI and Law & Order shows are churned out like butter on an Amish farm, Fringe gets canceled. The horror. Sounds like the trailer for a movie so scary, it would make The Ring look like The Goonies.
This was an extremely good episode. I think Fauxlivia does have some feelings towards Peter. And not just that. I think she learned during the time she spent in the blue universe that the people there aren't that bad. She and the rest of the Fringe division (and the people) in the red universe are just brain-washed into thinking the blue one is threatening them. I think she learned that the goofy Walter in the blue universe is kind of a nice guy, so is Broyles and Astrid. And she was impressed in an earlier episode that Peter felt compassion for the red universe and didn't want to destroy it, but instead solve the conflict peacefully. I think Faux-livia is staring to question the motives of Walternet, even though she tries to stay loyal to her mission. She and the rest in her Fringe team aren't bad people, Walternet is just acting like the spider in the web, pulling the strings.moreless
Fringe is the best show on TV, moving it to Fridays is one thing, but I hope they don't cancel it especially after this. if anything they should pull a Lost and map it out for 3 or 4 more years so it ENDS and not randomly canceled. I also expected some purple in the opening, but i guess they'll save that for is the universes ever collide. and i like B-royles better than ours, I wish he hadn't died. that sucks. and "vagenda" was hilarious. also, Olivia crossed over so quickly because B-royles shot her up with her Cortexifan blood they found on the table, which is also probably why she was able to stay and not zap back to the red universe
freaking awesome episode
I think Olivia crossed over quick this time because Alt-Broyles injected her with the alt-Cortexifam(or whatever it's called in the blue universe)
completely agree with comments of fringe being the best show on tv , i mean this episode was just amazing , one of the best things i've ever watched on television . Seriously , and even if it gets cancelled i'll always treasure the memory of this super original and exciting 3rd season !
I've noticed something, every time Olivia changes Universe successfully she is in the same...I guess 'type of matter' would describe it, when she switched in the tank since she was in water and going into air and the Universe switch didn't have permanent effects, when she went in the tank in the lab however the switch worked
I wrote a review of the show right after watching this episode, and everything I said there applies to this episode. Best show on TV at this time.
Fringe at its best.Such a shame that ratings don't match with the quality of this show.Such a shame... :(
