FTW vs. WTF: The TV Week in Review (April 27–May 3)

April showers are so WTF. May flowers, on the other hand, are totally FTW. Tax Day was a big W-T-F. But International Headband Week (seriously, it's on Wikipedia!) is F!T!W! Easter is very WTF once you know where all the Easter eggs are, but Cinco de Mayo es el FTW all day because of bottomless margaritas. Okay, May 6 may not be that fun because of all those margaritas, but you get our point: April is behind us now. It's May, and that is so FTW. Also, here's what we liked and didn't like about the last seven days in television.

SPOILER WARNING: If you haven't finished watching the latest episode of Orphan Black, "Mingling Its Own Nature With It"—or any of this week's new episodes (of Game of Thrones, The Following, etc.), for that matter—we suggest that you hold off on reading this story until you do.

FTW:

Game of Thrones shows off its baby blues

"Oathkeeper" set things into motion for the rest of the series, including the biggest surprise it's ever thrown at us: a huge deviation from the books! Haha, suck it, book readers! You were just as shocked as we were when the White Walkers grabbed an infant and turned it into one of them. With this turn of events, the page-turning folks in the room can't lord their knowledge of the series over those who only watch the show, and maybe for once they'll be the star of one of those Game of Thrones reaction videos.

FTW:

Hey have you seen Jonah's viral?!?

Veep gave Silicon Valley a run for its money this week as Selena and her team traveled to Palo Alto for a meeting with Clovis, a giant tech company "kindergarten for cyber-brats" led by a bug-eyed, 26-year-old billionaire and his hilariously weird "finance-y Nancy" CFO. There were too many highlights to list here—from all the "Smartch" hijinks to Mike falling off an exercise ball—but the crown jewel was Ryantology's pair of "virals," which almost earned Jonah a $4 million buyout. What a pile of elbows that guy is. Sorry you got f*cked by Dan's face, dude. (No we're not.)

FTW:

Jim Gaffigan is Obsessed

Comedy Central has been on fire lately, from the debut of Dave Attell's uncensored "Comedy Underground" to a great second season of "Inside Amy Schumer" to its newly minted iOS app that contains free full eps. The network continued the trend this week with Jim Gaffigan's new one-hour standup special, which quickly became its most-watched standup special since 2013. And with good reason: It was effing hilarious. Gaffigan shelled out indispensable advice on donuts, marriage, drinking, and not wanting to smell. Fried bread, anyone?

FTW:

Emma Stone's glorious lip-sync battle on The Tonight Show

Between Blues Traveler's "Hook" and DJ Khaled's "All I Do Is Win," the actress showed impressive range while mopping the floor with Fallon in the best one of these match-ups to date.

FTW:

Trophy Wife's Warren takes advantage of Title IX

In response to Kate's urging that he try to make some new friends, Warren decided to join a sports team at his school, and he chose... field hockey. As in women's field hockey, which allowed him to wear a skirt with pride, hang out with Ken Marino, and recite the "chicks with sticks" cheer. In a show with a fantastic ensemble cast, it's Warren who's our surprise favorite. (Sorry, Bert.) Also: Jackie's blacklight art lesson for Hilary! The couch looks so much better now! Good stuff.

FTW:

May the Fourth be with The Big Bang Theory

"The Proton Transmogrification" hit us (and Sheldon) in the heart with the death of Sheldon's childhood idol, Bob Newhart's Professor Proton. But the episode also took an honest and thoughtful look at the mechanics of mourning... while also providing plenty of spot-on Star Wars references, including a Death Star cake, the obligatory Jar Jar bashing, and an Obi-Wan Kenobi dream sequence. Huzzah.

FTW:

HBO fast-tracks a Project Greenlight reboot and gives The Comeback a comeback

Suddenly, the pay cable network is in the business of resurrecting notable projects from the early and mid-aughts, including a reboot of its amateur film competition Project Greenlight—and get this, original stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are on board for another around! Pretty nifty! The network also plans to do another season of the much beloved and kinda-before-its-time Lisa Kudrow comedy The Comeback. Now if only it could get something new going for Deadwood...

FTWTF:

Animal Planet joins the Animalsploitation fray

Blood Lake—from the creators of Sharknado, of course—stars Shannen Doherty and Christopher Lloyd as people who are trying to save a town from killer lampreys. So stupid. (And we can't wait to watch it.)

WTF:

Once Upon a Time is breaking hearts all over the place

The entire fandom was united in screaming "WTF?" when it was revealed this week that Snow White had cast the Dark Curse the second time by personally crushing Prince Charming's heart. And then she had Regina split her heart in half like it was one of those "Best Friend" necklaces from middle school, so she could have one half in her own chest and donate the other to her hubby. Yes, they now literally share a heart. Aside from the fever-dream logic involved, this seriously retconned a major part of the series premise: that Rumple had carefully orchestrated people and events for years so that Regina would cast the Dark Curse the first time. Turns out anyone with a list of ingredients can do it, just like Rice Krispie Treats.

WTF:

The Following is going to end Season 2 whichever way it wants so suck it

Attention all those people who've been thinking about watching The Following but feel overwhelmed because you've fallen behind on the show: It turns out you really don't need to watch all fifteen episodes of Season 2. The only ones you need are, like, the first two and then the last one. Everything else was just filler, because the writers just wanted to jam in the opportunity for a Hardy/Carroll buddy cop moment. The cult diaspora, the Claire death thing from Season 1, the mole in the FBI, the new cult—they were all completely fluff by the end. All anyone really needs to know going into Season 3 is that the twins be crazy, and Claire will demand that you drop everything you're doing in order to save her. Honestly, three episodes and the idea you already had that Claire isn't dead and you're good. Do you still want to catch up?

WTF:

The backdoor pilot for Supernatural: Bloodlines was so bad, guys

First there was the blatant disregard for the source material's mythology (shapeshifters are supposed to be gross, not sexy, dammit!). Then there was the atrocious acting. And then there was the fact that the plot is interchangeable with literally every other show on The CW except for Supernatural. Of course, it didn't help that the very nature of a backdoor pilot necessitates holding an audience hostage for an hour; the decision to interrupt our regularly scheduled Winchester-ing right in them middle of some heated end-of-season shenanigans only made situation worse. Please, somebody stick a silver bullet in its heart before a show we actually like ends up canceled to make room for this garbage in the fall.

WTF:

CSI's lame take on tech

Speaking of backdoor pilots, the planted debut of CBS's proposed CSI: Cyber spin-off aired on Wednesday night, and it featured all the lazy computer animation we've come to expect from the show—except this time, we flew through a computer!!! And the "big" case involved a computer-animated cam girl who seduced men into making their own sex tapes with a virus that switched on a two-way webcam. Ummm, no thanks, we'll pass.

WTF:

First we lose The Colbert Report, and now we're losing Craig Ferguson?

We're going to miss the hilarious Scotsman when he leaves the late-night game in December. And what will become of Geoff and Secretariat?

WTF:

The Prolethians are whack on Orphan Black

Last week, after kidnapping a recovering Helena from the hospital, the Proletheans killed Tomas. And while we're not too sad about losing that jerk, they're not proving to be much better. In this week's "Mingling Its Own Nature With It," Henrik married Helena in order to do God's work—which apparently means knocking her up. Um. Nope. Gross. Stop. Helena is in no way physically or mentally prepared for what's about to happen to her. Here's hoping Art saves the day at the last minute!

I thought Emma Stone had the worst lip synch battle. Besides the fact that Jimmy Fallon should have on for Mr. Roboto, Stephen Merchant, Jopseph Gordon Levitt and Paul Rudd all did a better job than her and it could be that I like the dancing component more than the bouncing up and down one.

WTF: I came here yesterday to say something about how bad The tomorrow people is, as usual, but then I realized that I hadn't yet seen the episode. So I watched it, and it was as stupid as ever. If I would go into detail, I'd be here all day. This show has to be the most poorly written trash on TV right now. (I watch almost everything that involves superpowers, but I'm going to be glad when this is finally over).

WTF: The 100 is almost as stupid. The surgery by radio scene was hilariously bad, but my favorite was when they started beating on that grounder to get him to show them which vial was the antidote, without giving him a way to answer it. (They had good reasons to think that he doesn't even understand English).

WTF: Supernatural Bloodlines backdoor pilot. My wife and I are big Supernatural fans, and when we watched this week's episode we knew pretty quick what this was, and it took us about 15 minutes after realizing that this was the new spin off series that we said - for the first time ever with supernatural -- 'let's just skip this one'. It was TERRIBLE. Please CW, get your s**t together.

Oh, and I guess a FTWTF to NCIS for a "very special episode" trying to deal with homeless issues. It was a little too "very special episode" but it did at least seem to be trying to make a real episode out of a message episode.

WTF to Craig Ferguson leaving Late Late Show indeed, best regular thing on TV is going away. But he's done a great job working up to it, keeping it classy all the way til Christmas, "all good things..." and all that.

FTW to Sirens' season finale, a dumb wedding episode that was funny as hell and involved a church dedicated to Kevin Costner.

A nervous FTW to Review for pulling out of the nosedive. I didn't enjoy watching it stupidly crumble after the first few episodes into a tailspin of this guy's life, but here we (hopefully) have him making smarter choices and socking Doctor Venture on the kisser. Good payoff to a challenging season.

FTW to Arrow for an emotional episode with not a single action scene in the first half. WTF to Isabel's costume though, holy crap did that look shit.

WTF to SVU for putting itself in a corner then cheating its way right back out. Are our protagonists heroes or villains when they pull that stuff? We know that they're heroes, but in-universe they are acting on faith, breaking the law and hoping it's the right reasons.

WTF to one of the worst SNLs in recent history, I couldn't even finish it.

FTW to TV.com for finally recognizing Comedy Underground! And Jim Gaffigan's special was great, but his work on The Late Late Show and @Midnight to promote it was just as good.

I like The Big Bang Theory, I liked that episode, but at this point they deliver so strongly that it never occurred to me to give it a FTW, that show wins nearly every week despite some folks talking endlessly about how it's not as good.

WTF to everything about that CSI: Cyber backdoor pilot, not just the tech but every piece of writing. A profiler who profiles with essentially no data, very stupid.

Well I would like to congratulate the spammers for having so many posts "trending" in the communities

Its so nice to see new members making use of the communities.

I personally LOVE spending my bank holiday weekend reading about the various PPV's that are on and I found the articles about prostitutes in Mumbai to be fascinating.

Right now, these posts have been in the communities for over 21 hours -

There is a post in the user support community complaining about it by @ Vicky8675309 - which you can read HERE - but I have now gotten used to it, and can't wait for more!!

I think @TVcom_editorial should be proud that new users are contributing so much to the site
And hopefully @Vicky8675309 @Rolamb @dhaworth @Gislef @edshrinker will change their minds, stop complaining and embrace the spam, as I have done.

Seriously, its already dubious whenever a brand new post - with 0 comments or 0 likes - its "trending" over an already established episode review, but this? It just makes your spam look pathetic.

If it really were that good then it wouldn't need to hijack an already established site to advertise. As it is only convinces me how lame it must be.

I agree. They're treating it like it's the worst thing ever, same as the other backdoor pilots. Just because they don't like it, it has to be killed and wiped off of this universe. People who write and comment here are becoming way too arrogant lately. It's the "power to the people" in a very, very bad way. I hope network execs don't read sites like this, which have become a black hole of the worst viewership.

I still see it as having lots of potential, but it needs ALOT of fine tuning. The fact that virtually no hunters know Chicago is a hotbed for supernatural shenanigans? Highly unlikely. The lead guy would make a pretty fantastic, if not stereotypical sidekick, but not a leading man by any means. The shifter mythology got turned around quite a bit, and lately all the werewolves are way too calm and in control, quite contrary to past versions. Just a whole lot of chaos going on all over with this pilot.

GOT- Baby Walkers? WHAA
The Originals: Has finally not only addressed what was happening on The Vampire Diaries, but also answered a question that was raised on TVD as well: Apparently the vampires keep their speed once they're on the Other Side? First enjoyable episode since Holt left.
Arrow was really good Wednesday night. Great setup for the last two of the season.
The Big Bang Theory was rather good this week too, really humanized Sheldon.
Orphan Black ended up being pretty good although I was pissed off that Felix just deserted Sarah and Kira just because of the dad. Who would've though we'd be in a position to actually care about Helena? Can't wait for next week.

WTF-
SPN Bloodlines- I dont like jumping on the hate bandwagon, and I honestly have seen worse episodes of Supernatural (Although I am pissed about that "shapeshifter", hopefully there's an explanation) but this episode was just..a horrible setup for a spin-off. It lacked plot depth and just seemed like another MOTW and ended with Sam and Dean headed off to fight Metatron, an obviously bigger deal than the "5 Monster Families" that "run Chicago". I just don't understand how these two shows could exist side by side when Supernatural is always going to tromp Bloodlines when it comes to what is more epic, or whatever.

An angel who can write things into existence, who has stopped the line of Prophets, locked Angels and Human Souls out of heaven, screwed up the entire "vale", not to mention the Civil War in Hell between Abaddon and Crowley.
Compared to..the city of Chicago being ran by Monster Families. Would Purgatory or Eve come in at all? How big would Bloodlines try to be? These are my questions.

The Once Upon a time episode was a win for me. It played with my emotions and the splitting of the heart was not something I expected. And as for the curse being cast with realative ease...it doesn't discount all the manipulating Rumple did to get Regina to cast it. Its like Ikea furniture its always easy to reassemble it once you've put it together and taken it apart once!
2
Reply
Flag
I always thought the reason Rumple had to use Regina, was what he loved most, Bae, was already on the other side. The exact logic for why he had to use Regina is a bit murky, but he couldn't do it himself. It was a good episode, I have accepted that I can never take this show too seriously or I'll never enjoy it, but all in all I thought it was one of the better episode this season.
Reply
Flag
They said why he chose Regina. Because he got the power to see the future and learned that he needs Cora's child to cast the curse.

This is a self fulfilling destiny crap that somehow coexists on a show that tries to give us a moral about free will... go figure.

People on here can suck it because...
FTW - Supernatural: Bloodlines - Parts of it was pretty bland and yes the episode did feel like a episode of The Originals. Give it a second episode, and I bet the stories start to improve and the characters will start to develop more. First episode normally isn't the best, but improves over time. Major thing that needs improved is some acting by lead character Enis, but other then that I'm excited for it!

The scene with the White Walker transformation may not be in the books, but there are definite hints of it. Aside from finding out that Craster was sacrificing his sons to them, right before the Others try to take Gilly's baby, she says that "his brothers are coming for him."

Penny Dreadful is one of the only things I've seen Eva Green in for awhile where she didnt get nekkid, so by that measure it was a bit of a letdown, but otherwise pretty good fun even if it was way more of a reminder of LXG than most want to admit.

Strongly agree on POI, Finch only showed up briefly, but what little time he appeared on screen was extremely impactful and contrary to his usual demeanor. Both excited and terrified at the idea of Finch losing it and taking the fight directly to Decima.

Well it was only the pilot, I am sure there is plenty of time for her to be nekkid. I mean after all that was literally the only good thing about that horrid Camelot show on Starz not too long ago.

That's not going to happen for the simple reason that network TV tries to appeal to the broadest possible base. Doing it the correct way would go right over most people's head and make the show less entertaining for them. There's not even a good way to make it look interesting to the average person while keeping it realistic. Besides that it doesn't harm the entertainment value for anybody but a select few that know how it really works and want to see realism on a completely fictional show.

Look, you expect some things to get changed fo TV. For example, cop shows where the bad guy is on trial the week after he gets caught, instead of nine months later. We take out those nine months so that the part of the story about catching him can be in the same episode as the part of the story that deals with he trial. On CSI, they have these fingerprint scanners that find one, and only one, match for fingerprints. That's not how it actually works... the machine spits out several, and then he prints are examined by hand to decide if there's a match or not. (And don't get me started on the eye-catching displays with fancy animated text.) The point is, there are some things you have to change to fit into the dramatic structure of a TV show.

The premise of CSI is that examination of tiny details can solve a crime. If they can't even be bothered to find out how anything works, why would I have any confidence that their stories, whichturn on interpretation of details of how things work, will be even remotely believable?
2
Reply
Flag
I don't watch CSI so I didn't watch this episode either. However I would be interested in a cyber-crime centric show and that's why I have to disagree that the details are no big deal. If technology is not the center of the show, mistakes are not important. But if they want to make a whole show based on cyber crime, then they should at least be accurate with the technological details. It's like legal trial shows or medical shows. Some minor mistakes regarding laws or hospitals/diseases can be forgiven in most shows. But you can't make a show about a hospital and invent your own diseases/treatments. Nor can you make a legal trial show and create your own laws. Then they show is completely pointless.

I KNEW CSI this week was an excuse to usher in another drama after the failed renewal of NY and Miami, but it was so obviously bad. POI is doing an awesome job in setting up for the finale. I loved this week's ep, and I'm sure the final two eps of the season will be incredible.

FTW: Penny Dreadful pilot is made available on Youtube.

I know you guys can't review it for a few weeks but I am sure a mention of the pilots release wouldn't have hurt!

BUT is it region free?

As @dodge_hickey says: no. It also is not available on YouTube but on the ShowTime pages. I did it the other (morally questionable) way to be able to watch it in a non US country. If you ever need any help with the VPN thing, pm me.

Yeah, I got a "the uploader has not made this video available in your country". So I gotta go the other way, I guess. ;-) Thank you

You are completely right', I hadn't found it when I looked for it earlier. And even now when I searched on YouTube with the full title (Penny Dreadful Season 1: Episode 1 Full Episode) I couldn't find it. Only by going to the Penny Dreadful channel it was visible. They hid it well.

I watched it on Youtube the day it was released!

FTW: Trophy wife and Veep which are still gems. I hope the first one won't get cancelled.
FTW: Angela Kinsey on New Girl. And Zach Woods everywhere!
FTW: Playing House is surprisingly really funny.
WTF: Almost Human got cancelled.

WTF Almost Human got cancelled.

I know, it has been said more in these comments but it can't be said enough. Especially compared to the shows they renewed.

WTF: The fact that the creators of Bloodlines thought anything "Supernatural" related would be successful without the Winchesters.

This is by far the best show you have, CW. Don't ruin it.

And as far as Bloodlines completely ignoring the show's mythology, I agree. I thought the alpha shapeshifter was the only one that could change form without shedding their skin... Am I missing something? Maybe they plan to explain it eventually, yeah, but the Sam and Dean I know (that don't ignore things for the sake of a spin-off) would have wanted answers right away.

In season 8's, episode bitten it was declared that werewolf's close to the alpha in the bloodline had better control in the shifting.

There is something similar here if not the exact same thing. The shifters did talk about keeping the bloodlines pure.

That should have been the big mystery that the monsters in Chicago can shift at will and the other monsters being far more powerful than average. And why the families war about who control the territory inside Chicago, they are united about hunters and against hiding their existence from humans.

That's a very good point. They never revealed much detail about the alpha bloodlines beyond the werewolves, so that would definitely make sense. Thanks!

WTF: Supernatural : Bloodlines and Enzo's stupid revenge on TVD
FTW: The ending of Game of Thrones and Skye and Ward scenes on Agents of SHIELD.

The Vampire Diaries has become a huge WTF. Enzo was one of the only things (if not the only thing...) I've liked about this season and they ruined his character.

FTW: From Dusk Till Dawn. I don't know where the show is going, and how it can keep up this same story line for a second season, but I like what it's doing at the moment.

WTF stands for Where's The Fargo? Two weeks now and still no mentions? For shame tv.com. For shame.

Emma Stone is awesome just in general, but that Fallon thing was great. Andrew Garfield singing the Spider-Man theme on Fallon was also good.

I don't think OUAT retconned anything, Rumple obviously orchestrated the people to line it up so the curse could be BROKEN, not just so it could be enacted. the curse itself wasn't anything special, he just had to have it set up so he could get his way out of it.

so sad about Craig Ferguson leaving, my heart hurts a tad.

that horrible horrible Fringe episode from season 1 that was unaired until random season 2 airing and was on the S2 DVD/BD was even better than the Supernatural Bloodlines episode. just find a way to unkill Kol and bring him to The Originals if they want him on their network that badly.

also, can we just appreciate Michiel Huisman for a moment? so far in 2014 he was on Nashville, then Game of Thrones, now Orphan Black? whoever his management is, they're doing a pretty damn good job.

Jon Oliver's new show was great. I always find myself missing the Daily Show for any number of reason, so this is a good thing.
Sirens was a great little addition this year. And the short season meant it didn't overstay its welcome, same goes for Review.

Even the season finale of Review with Forrest MacNeil doesn't warrant a FTW around here? This season was so beautifully orchestrated, and the ending was a perfect culmination of everything that had come before. Glad this got a second season because I can't wait to see how Andy Daly continues this saga.
