FTW vs. WTF: The TV Week in Review (October 21)

Geez, has another week gone by already? Well, let's talk about some of the awesome and not-so-awesome TV that aired during it, then!

FTW

Suburgatory returned and showed off its talents

The ABC comedy returned with a talent show full of funnies: The Shays' silly cat dance to "Stray Cat Strut" and Malik's Medium homage reminded us that this series can be totally weird when it wants to be.

"We Are Never Ever Gonna Cook Together," a Breaking Bad / Taylor Swift parody

Too bad the guys who made it didn't think to invite Aaron Paul to participate.

The Walking Dead's Season 3 premiere

After a badass silent opening, the episode moved quickly and had tons of action, with just the right amount of personal drama. Plus it set up an interesting new home for the main characters. And ZOMG zombies in riot gear!

The Vampire Diaries' touching devotion to vomiting blood

It's not hard to believe that transitioning from a human into a vampire has its downsides. But this week's episode of TVD (which was genuinely fantastic) made it very clear: Being a vampire can be awful sometimes!

J.R. Bourne comes to Revenge

Your mileage may vary on this one, but fans of Teen Wolf or The Secret Circle (R.I.P.) must have been straight-up elated this week when the actor behind everybody's favorite hunter of witches and werewolves showed up in the Hamptons to hassle one of TV's most annoying characters (Declan obvs.) Fingers crossed for a violent showdown!

American Horror Story: Asylum's incredible cast

It's almost too early to single out any one element from American Horror Story: Asylum's premiere as it felt more like an expensive appetizer plate than an actual meal, but there's one thing nobody can deny: This thing has the best cast on television. From Jessica Lange's scenery chewing to Chloe Sevigny's commitment to being committed, there are no weak links.

FTWTF

American Horror Story: Asylum as a whole

New category! Because even if it is too early to single stuff out from the premiere, the episode as a whole was definitely "For the what the F?"!

WTF

Oliver Queen vs. a flock of seagulls on Arrow

In a flashback, Oliver's dad washed up on shore and was being eaten by menacing seagulls! So Oliver fought them off... and then he puked.

Brody's murder in the woods gets the sitcom edit

Vulture recognized the ridiculousness of last week's Homeland and added a laugh track to Brody's bad day.

NBC's bad monkey business

Animal Practice was starting to pick up steam, and we're sad to see it go. Because let's face it: We'd choose Justin Kirk, Tyler Labine, and Crystal the Monkey over Whitney Cummings any day.

We wouldn't want to be present in the Swisher-Garcia household right now

This was an especially rough week for one celebrity couple: The same day JoAnna Garcia learned that her new show Animal Practice was canceled, her husband Nick Swisher—an outfielder for the New York Yankees—was swept out of the playoffs after his team's terrible performance against the Detroit Tigers.

Great stuff, I loved American Horror Story, and The Walking Dead premiere was sweet! Also great to see JR Bourne on Revenge, and the Vampire Diaries was great but still not the best teen vampire series.

I was so so happy to see JR Bourne on Revenge! But not because I watch Teen Wolf or Secret Circle - because I loved him in Stargate. :D

You are entitled to that opinion. The typical 'venger, however has 2 traits you might want to think about. 1) Personal revenge is a valid option. 2) Nolan is awesome and intensely loyal. Knowing that most of the fans have these 2 traits might mean you decide to protect your health instead of attacking Nolan. Just sayin :)

FTW:

Person of Interest: Finch and Bear, funny and adorable all at the same time.

Keep the Breaking Bad parodies coming!

Seriously, you want to give a wtf to Arrow for the whole seagulls thing, at least get the scene right, his father didn't wash up on shore, he had wrapped him inside the very lifeboat he was on and held onto the body so he could properly bury it.

FTW:

Person of Interest. Reese,Finch, Bear,Carter, and Fusco. My new fantastic Five, TVD mostly because of Damon and Alaric,Okay basically all of Thursday night tv., JR Bourne on Revenge, Sinqua Walls on OUAT. Covert Affairs.

WTF: Kalinda's twisted storyline on TGW. Last week I couldn't look at a container of ice cream w/o cringing. This week there was kung fu fighting in the kitchen. Le sigh...Crystal the monkey getting the boot. She doesn't deserve that.

Yeah, I'll probably never eat soft-serve again. Blech...I wanna know who the sicko on the writing staff is who is responsible for developing her character. Her behavior is not adding anything to the show or the storyline, and it's simply disgusting.

FTW: AMC and Dish settling their lover's spat so that I can watch the Walking Dead at home instead of having to drive to my sister's house.

Also WTF: No Community or Fringe!

WTF: American Horror Story. I got halfway through the first episode and turned it off. Terrible.
Reply
Flag
Also WTF, how could you guys not include the Community video?! I hope October 19th gets here and quick.

WTF: Nikita not getting over a million viewers for it's awesome premiere. Personally, I blame The CW and ANTM for this...
Reply

The only Nikita that didn't suck was the movie. So finally some justice cancel the crap!

How come there wasnt an American Horror Story review?

There was. In fact, Price photo-recapped it which was awesome!

FTW:

Another mention for the budding friendship between Finch and Bear on Person of Interest.

Game night on The Big Bang Theory, especially Penny and Amy Farrah Fowler kiss attacking Sheldon during the wrestling portion of the competition.

Dalia's "I will always think of you as a housekeeper" speech on Suburgatory.

Copper getting renewed for Season 2.

Community's October 19th announcement video. At first we said, "Wait a minute...?" and then we said "Wait a minute...!"

I thought Reese's million dollar smile would have been at the top of the FTW list!!

Loved that Person of Interest had Finch and Reese safely reunited and new co-star, Bear, wriggling his way into Finch's (and our) hearts. Bear also taught Finch how to play ball and to trust his "good friends" to keep him safe.

Not a very good list, especially with "Binders full of women" and Candy Crowley settling a moot point on the use of the word "terror" during the debate this week, and Alphas just going full on badass, Covert Affairs' great use of location shooting to heighten an already tense episode, Fox renewing Bob's Burgers for a 4th season (and a WTF for giving Mindy Project a full ride before it's barely aired), Castle and Beckett in the Hamptons, and that's all just from what the site's news reminded me of, I remember some big laughs and strong TV moments this week like Carson Kressley exploding a passion fruit all over Craig Ferguson on the Late Late Show. And I'm not alone, I see good comments below. So WTF, TV.com? ;-)

ROFL @ the Homeland parody!

And what's wrong with the Arrow scene? Why is it a "WTF" moment? Plz explain :3

The best win was the new Troy and Abed's new "episode" for Community. How could you miss that? It was so October 19th. Elsewhere, Det. Ryan's interrogation when he found out Castle's secret was a win. Also Danny Pino's Amaro going undercover as a john on SVU. Yeah, like he'd have to pay for it. *sigh*

Finch and Bear in Person of Interest. Funnier than Guys With Kids and Partners together.

WTF: No Nikita review. Someone has to acknowledge this show exists besides me.
Reply
Flag
It's seriously one of the most underrated shows that I've ever seen. It needs all the buzz and coverage that it could get.

While Whitney is sub-par, I think Animal Practice was (marginally) even worse. I'll give that a FTW.

Also, MTV's Underemployed seemed kind of lacking, I don't know if it was just me, but it seemed just incredibly bland. Hopefully, it picks up.

FTW: Finch's growing relationship with Bear on Person of Interest. <3

Did I miss last weeks? Because FTW there would have gone to: yep, you guessed it. Fringe rocked!

WTF this week: there was no Fringe :(

that breaking bad parody is so funny!!

Where was last week's ftw vs wtf?

Preempted by politics +/or sports. :(

I think Oliver Queen puking should not be a WTF, the smell of a rotting body would make most people puke.

Oliver should've run. He should've run so far away.

... he couldn't get away...

The more I think about it, the more I'm saddened by Animal Practice's cancellation. I've been enjoying it quite a lot lately, and with Betsy Sodaro's character becoming more and more likable (as well as Bobby Lee and Tyler Labine not being annoying), there isn't a character or an actor on the show that I dislike. I think it'd be awesome paired with Go On and Community. Imagine that comedy block! The tones of the shows are very similar; why wont these types of comedies get better ratings?! Well, Go On has been getting decent ratings, but I attribute a lot of that to Friends fans that want to see Perry. Anyway, yes, it's a WTF for me, even though its cancellation was predictable.

FTW: Quinn's verbal slapdown of Red in this week's Scandal.

WTF: Fitz tries for sex in the woods with Secret Service only steps away. Classy!

I think the sitcom version of Brody's adventures is more of a FTW than WTF.
