FX Picks Up Ryan Murphy's American Horror Story

... Before he was writing stories about singing high-schoolers, Ryan Murphy wrote about horny plastic surgeons and men undergoing sex changes on Nip/Tuck and the never-saw-the-light-of-day Pretty/Handsome, respectively. Point is, beneath the joyous pop-song covers and colorful sheen of Glee, Murphy has a few screws loose. And that's the Murphy we'll see on display in FX's newest project, American Horror Story, which was picked up to series today. The exact details on the show are still secret, but it's said to have supernatural elements and involves a house that exhibits some sort of sentience. Dylan McDermott, Connie Britton, and Jessica Lange star, and the show will debut in October. [Deadline Hollywood]

... TV's current scariest dude is about to land in a fairy tale. Giancarlo Esposito, who made millions of people extremely uncomfortable last night as Gus in Breaking Bad, is joining the cast of ABC's Once Upon a Time. In the fairy-tale drama, Esposito will play the man in the Evil Queen's magic mirror and a sycophantic news reporter. This is no way for Gus to maintain his image as the craziest son of a bitch in Albuquerque. Now I just want to give him a hug. [TV Line]

... Soccer? Women's soccer!? What!?!? A lot of people watched the Women's World Cup Final yesterday on ESPN—13.46 million viewers, to be almost exact. It was ESPN's biggest soccer audience ever, though it was still pretty far off from 1999's Women's World Cup broadcast, which averaged 17.98 million viewers for ABC. As for the result? Japan won after the U.S. choked away several advantages. [TV Guide]

... Not as many people watched Breaking Bad's Season 4 premiere, but the show still set a series record. 2.6 million tuned in to see buckets of blood and dissolving bodies and holy f*** did you see that? It was crazayyyyyy. [TV Line]

... British funny man Ricky Gervais is working on a new series with former Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips. Dubbed Afterlife, the show follows an atheist who dies and goes to heaven. No network is currently attached to the show. C'mon BET, step up and grab this. [EW]

... Actor B.D. Wong has confirmed his exit from Law & Order: SVU. Wong has taken a supporting role in NBC's upcoming mind-bender and heart-tugger Awake, which stars Jason Isaacs as a man whose life is split in two after a horrific car crash. Good move, B.D. [TV Line]

... ABC's Pan Am will welcome Mike Vogel (Blue Valentine) as a pilot in the period piece about the defunct airline. He replaces Jonah Lotan, who played the male lead in the pilot as a pilot who likes pie a lot. I may have made up that last bit. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Holla! VH1 has renewed Single Ladies for a second season! [TV Guide]

... Ever wonder what happens to the cabs used on the game show Cash Cab after the show has wrapped for the day? They kill people. A producer on the Canadian version of Cash Cab was driving the titular car in Vancouver when he struck and killed a 61-year-old pedestrian. May that pedestrian rest happy knowing that he is now the answer to a trivia question. [LA Times]

I'll probably watch American Horror Story soley for Connie Britton. probably check out Pan Am too.. and Single Ladies was surprisingly good. Queen Latifah refered to it as Sex And The City with "some color", but it's probably better than S&TC, which i've barely half payed attention to since i don't have two X chromosomes.. but this could be because I grew up in when Clueless was a popular movie and i like Stacey Dash.. so who knows

I'm torn about American Horror Story. It's by Ryan Murphy, who can't seem to figure out what "character consistency" means, but it has Connie Britton, who doesn't know what "bad acting" means (and by that I mean she can't be bad in anything).
