FX Renews Archer and Its Insider Jokes for Season 5

Johnny Bench called, and he said Archer has been renewed for a fifth season. FX has asked for 13 more episodes of the animated hit, with Season 5 likely to debut next January. The show is currently midway through its fourth season.

Despite the fact that I still have a hard time meeting fellow Archer fans in real life, FX insists the show is setting personal bests in viewership. The network says it's the second-highest rated cable show in the male 18-34 demographic this year behind The Walking Dead. FX also wants you to know that Anthony Bourdain guest-stars in tomorrow's episode and the season finale will be a two-parter spread out over April 4 and 11.

And since I've run out things to say about this news other than 50 different versions of "Yay!" how about a poll? (For the record, I voted for Pam.)

Been watching Archer on Netflix, love it.

As to who is the best ISIS member, from a guy's perspective, it's got to be Lana. She's their most professional agent, and often ends up in lingerie, low-cut dresses, and probably the best costume ever, a French maid outfit. Sorry Archer, but you lose out to Agent Double D.

I'm not in the target demographic (female 35-45) but love the show! So happy it was renewed!!

I'm in with the "male 18-34 demographic" crowd? Not sure if I'm mortified, or inappropriately excited. Oh wait, it's Archer ― I can be both.

Amazing news! Archer is the best [adult swim] show not on Cartoon Network and easily one of my top 3 animated series currently.
I voted for Cheryl, cause she's awesome. Duh!

I totally forgot that theoretically FX could have decided NOT to renew Archer. I took the show for granted. This season is as good as the previous three. I'm very happy it's coming back for another season. I hope it gets 10 seasons, if the writing stays this good.

Speaking of the Archer cast... recently Krieger mentioned that Mallory killed "the fat one" I imagine that he meant the fat satellite tech that likes "Lord of the Rings" a bit too much.

But when did THAT happen? I did notice not seeing him in a while; the last time I recall was when Archer was lost at sea.

I recall thinking about this when Cheryl/Pam mentioned that the entire building is staffed by like 5 people... when in past seasons we saw lots of "drones"

Honestly, I can't pick a favorite character. Whenever I start thinking one of them is redundant, I immediately just start remembering all of their awesome scenes and lines.

I have seen the first 2 seasons of Archer... god I don't know how many times. At least a dozen.

It makes for a great marathon when you're stuck at home. You can watch a whole season in like 4 hours... and it's a FUNNY 4 hours.

It's also highly quotable. I've included "Phrasing" into my canned responses, though I have to try not to use that at work.

Best show out there.

Best ensemble cast of any animated show that has ever made. It's actually better than a lot of live action shows, just look at Terra Nova (LOL). If I'm ever sufficiently famous for TV.com to ask me what my 5 favorite shows are (which will never happen), then I can say that Archer will definitely be on the list.

To coin a phrase: Good news, everybody!

I actually worry about Archer's renewal less and less each year, at least for now. Its long run continually lessens the lingering disappointment over Frisky Dingo getting only two seasons before dying.

Carol, Cheryl, Carina...who doesn't like a multi-personality, submissive, sadistic comedic character?

I'm glad the ratings have been reflecting how consistently great the writing has been so far this year

I'm stunned that they keep renewing it season per season. Honestly, just tell Adam Reed to keep creating Archer until he gets tired of it. I know I won't.

They canceled fire fly, and futurerama.

But since futurama came back, it has been a shadow of itself. Not as bad as community however

True dat. Futurama still looks great and sounds great but the writing is as flat and lifeless as a sheet of glass. I can't understand why so many fans seem to think it's as good as ever.

FX carries Archer, not Fox. Different people in charge.

13 eps a season has always kept it good simples, a no brainer decision to renew,

I told someone who worked with me last week about the show and he texted me monday to tell me he thought it was "amazing". I learned about the show from another tv dot com member. Also my husband likes Archer. So I know 2 Archer fans IRL and I'm fairly anti-social when I'm not at work;-)

@JT_Kirk

Archer costs probably a lot less money then the Simpsons or Family Guy or any other Broadcast Network animated show. Their budget is probably a lot smaller and so they can only afford to produce so many episodes per year. They could not produce 16 episodes for season 3 because they could not cope with that amount of work with the resources they have. I think 13 per season is their limit.

The good thing is like Louie or Justified or Sons of Anarchy or any other FX show, the costs for Archer are lower than any other network and so Archer will hopefully get more seasons going forward.

Archer has outperformed Anger Management in all the current season's ratings, last week it was a 70% increase over it, yet Anger Management got a 90-episode commitment while Archer continues to squeak by renewal every time.

any theories on why?
just curious--I don't watch Anger Management but love Archer
Reply

Anger Management is a prestige get, they're showing they can run with the biggest broadcast network I think, it got a lot of press when it first happened and I suspect they're eating that choice now.

The ridiculously large commitment AngMang got is stupefying. I can only hope that Charlie will again implode looong before the show reaches the syndication threshold.

I did not say that archer did not deserve to be renewed. I said that they do not have the resources to make more 13 episodes per year/season. Also I do not think (apart from the first season) that Archer has ever been in danger of cancellation thus not really squeaked by, the reason they have not beenbreally in any trouble? They get good rating and they are cheap to produce. Plus they are critically acclaimed and good for FX's brand.

I understand, my counterpoint was that if a clunker like Anger Management can garner a huge order, there must be some hint of money coming in from that viewership, and yet Archer has an even better viewership than that so there must be some ad revenue.

As for production costs, Archer has no big name stars to pay (unlike, say, Charlie Sheen) and animation is an inexpensive CGI via existing tools that they've been using for years on the cheapest budgets over on Adult Swim, so there's no real budget risk beyond scripts running out of quality - Archer surely could run with a bigger order. The idea that AM is cheaper to produce seems unlikely.

Also, Anger management funny enough is probably half the price of Archer and they have to produce their episodes in 2 years.
