Gift Guide 2010: TV-on-DVD

Here's our list of the best—and most gift-worthy—DVD releases from 2010. Good luck making those lists and checking them twice! (Click the links after each show title to buy online.)

Notable Single-Season Releases

Glee: The Complete First Season
Gleek out with this 7-disc set, which features all 22 episodes from the wildly popular first season as well as a ton of special features—including interviews with the cast, video diaries, and audition tapes.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Season 5
The Paddy's Pub gang gets funnier with age—Season 5 included such brilliant inventions as the D.E.N.N.I.S. system, kitten mittens, and the Dick Towel. Special features include a blooper reel, a "kitten mittens" endless loop, and a Philly Pheaturette.

Archer: Season 1
If you're hoping to gift this set for Christmas, you're out of luck; it's set to be released on December 28. But do consider pre-ordering and then wrapping up an I.O.U.—the wait will be worth it!

Ugly Americans: Season 1
Re-enter a world where humans and zombies and wizards and demons and animals and robots live in "harmony." How quaint! This set includes all 14 episodes from the hilarious first season.

Life: 4-Disc Set
Oprah narrates this Discovery Channel mini-series, created in a partnership with the BBC. It's full of brilliant footage of many of our planet's most beautiful creatures; the set also includes a making-of featurette.

Community: The Complete First Season
This 4-disc set may look tiny—but it contains a ton of special features, including cast and crew commentary on all 25 first-season episodes, hilarious outtakes, an extended cut of "Communication Studies," and an alternate cut of "Advanced Criminal Law."

Hot Men in Leading Roles

Angel: Complete Series
See David Boreanaz at his dead sexiest in this re-release. The complete series DVD set has been re-packaged to look sleeker, but don't worry—all the same stuff is still inside.

The Tudors: The Complete Series
Well, at least Jonathan Rhys-Meyers was hot during the first couple seasons; now you watch his transformation into the over-sexed, insanely greedy King Henry VIII in one fell swoop. The set also includes a bunch of special features, like historical featurettes, bloopers, and deleted scenes. Long live the king!

Deadwood: The Complete Series (Blu-Ray)
When I say "hot men," I'm referring to Timothy Olyphant, of course. No offense to Ian McShane. And now you can see both of them in Blu-Ray!

21 Jump Street: The Complete Series
Do you need a reason to watch Johnny Depp in anything? 21 Jump Street is where Captain Jack Sparrow got his start, and this set marks the first time the the whole show—all 103 episodes—has been released on DVD.

Comedy Gold

The Larry Sanders Show: The Complete Series
In addition to all 89 episodes of the series, this exhaustive set includes a feature-length documentary about the making of the show, footage of a lecture Garry Shandling gave at USC, a collectors' book, and new outtakes and bloopers.

Daria: The Complete Animated Series
Get your two-dimensional teenage angst on! This set includes all 65 episodes and both TV movies, plus special features like cast interviews, several featurettes, and a music video by Mystik Spiral.

Sports Night: Season 1
Remember when Peter Krause, Josh Charles, and Felicity Huffman were on Aaron Sorkin's sitcom—together? Those were the days. The Season 1 set includes a gag reel, interviews with the cast, and a face-off with real sportscasters from ESPN.

Flight of the Conchords: The Complete Collection
Once you own this DVD set, it can be business time all the time. Besides the entire 22 episodes of the short-lived series, the set includes outtakes, deleted scenes, and a never-before-seen, 30-minute special entitled "One Night Stand."

The Life and Times of Tim: The Complete First Season
You know what's better than watching all 10 episodes of the first season and all 10 awkward animated shorts? Knowing that HBO stopped taking those crazy pills and decided to un-cancel this weird little cartoon. Tim is returning for a third season... sometime in the future.

Gone But Not Forgotten

Lost: The Complete Collection
If memorabilia is your thing, you've hit the jackpot. This collection contains 38(!) discs of episodes and footage, as well as a Comic-Con featurette, cast interviews, a replica of the island, a Senet game, an Ankh containing a secret message from Jacob, a black torch light, and an episode guide book.

Heroes: The Complete Series
The downside: "Complete" means that the set includes the (horrible) fourth season. The upside: "Complete" also means that the set includes lots of behind-the-scenes footage, an alternate ending to Season 2, and interviews with the cast.

24: The Complete Eighth Season
Season Day 8 comes out on December 14, so you can re-watch everything in preparation for the movie.

Party Down: Season 1 & Season 2
Two seasons of the excellent misfit comedy Party Down weren't nearly enough, but at least we'll always have the DVDs to ease the pain. Now you can reunite with Adam Scott, Lizzy Caplan, Ken Marino, and the rest of the pink-bow-tied crew in all their snarky, snappy glory.

All the Single Ladies

The Golden Girls: 25th Anniversary Complete Collection
Seven seasons, several hours of extra commentary, retrospective featurettes, and one deck of cards... all stuffed into a cute little case that's shaped like Sophia's wicker purse.

Sex and the City: Complete Collection (Deluxe Edition)
This collection is even more complete than it's predecessors because it includes all six fabulous seasons and both mediocre movies. But it still does not include a pair of Manolos.

BBC on DVD

Doctor Who: The Complete Fifth Series
Fifth series, eleventh doctor—I still don't understand how this show is organized, but that's not really important. All you need to know is that Matt Smith is the star, and he is adorable. The set also includes audio commentaries, outtakes, unaired scenes, and video diaries.

Sherlock: Season 1
If you like Sherlock Holmes and advanced technology, you'll love this modern version of the old detective's tale. Plus, Tim from the British Office plays Watson! The set also includes audio commentaries and a making-of featurette.

Happy holidays!
