Gilmore Girls: Here's Everything We Know About the Netflix Revival

In October, news broke that Netflix was reviving The WB/The CW dramedy Gilmore Girls with the series’ original cast. Last week, Netflix, having presumably worked out all the actors' deals, was finally able to confirm this exciting endeavor. Here’s everything we know so far about the greatest thing to happen since Danish Day and the Bid-A-Basket Festival. Check back in the coming weeks as we'll be updating this space as more information becomes available.

There will be four "episodes"

Each episode will be 90-minutes long and will correspond to a specific season so that the entire revival will take place over one calendar year. The first episode is titled “Winter” and will be followed by spring, summer, and fall, just like Carole King sang. Filming began February 2 in Los Angeles.

If Sherman-Palladino has it her way, all four episodes will not be released at once so that the ending isn't spoiled for those fans who aren't obsessed bingewatchers. (Netflix has not commented on the situation yet.)

Who's definitely returning

In the official announcement, Netflix confirmed that series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband, executive producer and director Daniel Palladino, would be returning to write and direct all four episodes.

Netflix also confirmed that original stars Lauren Graham (Lorelai Gilmore), Alexis Bledel (Rory Gilmore), Kelly Bishop (Emily Gilmore), Scott Patterson (Luke Danes), Keiko Agena (Lane Kim), Sean Gunn (Kirk Gleason), Yanic Truesdale (Michel Gerard), Matt Czuchry (Logan Huntzberger), Liza Weil (Paris Geller), Milo Ventimiglia (Jess Mariano), Jared Padalecki (Dean Forester), and David Sutcliffe (Christopher Hayden) will all be reprising their roles.

Meanwhile, TV Line reports that Danny Strong (Doyle McMaster) and Emily Kuroda (Mrs. Kim) will returnVariety says Vanessa Marano (April Nardini) is back, Buzzfeed confirmed that Sally Struthers (Babette) and Michael Winters (Taylor Doose) will reprise their roles, and Jackson Douglas (Jackson Belleville) tweeted that he's back, too. Todd Lowe (Zack Van Gerbig), Liz Torres (Miss Patty), John Cabrera (Brian Fuller), Tanc Sade (Finn), Sebastian Bach (Gil), and Melissa McCarthy (Sookie St. James) are also all confirmed to be returning.

Sherman-Palladino has said that Rory will be single—as in not married—but dating when the series returns, so don't assume that just because her three main suitors will appear in the revival that it necessarily means anything.

Additionally, in an interview with TV Line, Bishop also confirmed that Sherman-Palladino has written Rose Abdoo’s Gypsy into the revival.

Who's still up in the air

Melissa McCarthy, whose star skyrocketed after the series went off the air in 2007, didn’t attend the cast reunion last June in Austin, Texas to celebrate the show’s 15th anniversary, and Sherman-Palladino said they haven't crafted a storyline for Sookie, but have reached out to her in the chance that she'll be able to fit something into her schedule. However, McCarthy took to Twitter to say that wasn't true. "Thanks for the invite, but sadly no one asked me or Sookie to come back to Stars Hollow. Wish them all the best!!" she tweeted in response to a fan asking her to return. If she's not there, ASP has said there will be an explanation for Sookie's absence, but no matter what happens, fans can still take pleasure in knowing they were the OG McCarthy fans and that they liked her before she stole the show and a whole bunch of puppies in Bridesmaids.

UPDATE 4/7/16: Melissa McCarthy will officially be returning for the revival

Who's new?

In new casting, Sutton Foster and Bailey De Young, who both starred in Amy Sherman-Palladino's Bunheads opposite Kelly Bishop, will appear in the revival, according to TV Line. Meanwhile, Mae Whitman, who played Lauren Graham's other on-screen daughter (on NBC's Parenthood) will cameo in the revival.

The first episode will deal with Richard's passing

Edward Herrmann, who played Gilmore family patriarch Richard over the course of the show's seven seasons, passed away in December 2014. The first episode "Winter" will deal with the grief of Richard's passing, according to Bishop, who told TV Line that Emily is a "raw nerve." Four months will have passed since his death at the beginning of the first 90-minute installment.

We will definitely learn those final four words

For years fans wondered what Sherman-Palladino’s original ending for the series would have looked like had she not departed the series over contract disputes after Season 6. They wondered what those much-buzzed about final four words were that she had planned for the series finale. TV Line’s Michael Ausiello has tried in vain for years to pry them from her grasp, and now we’ll finally find out what they are in the “Fall” episode. As Lauren Graham told Ausiello, the words are not said by one person but instead are an exchange.

There's still plenty of time to rewatch the entire series on Netflix

Giddy with excitement! It will feel like returning home. Stars Hollow was home, in my head, all those years. Loreali and Rory were my people. I took all the drama, all the ins and outs, personally. Can't wait to experience one more year with them. Hooray!

I am so excited to see that they are making new episodes! For years I have been telling people that my life is basically the same as Lorelei and Rory's life. In fact, my humor is pretty much the same as theirs. For so long I've just known that they were still carrying on their lives in that Gilmore way and turning Stars Hollow, and any other place they honor with their presence, upside down. :)

I bet the last 4 words exchanged are between either Lorelai and her fiancé or Rory and her fiancé at their wedding and it will show one of the girls saying "I do" and then their fiancé saying "I do"

What is amazing about Netflix is the fact you can unblock much more content using one Netflix account. All I had to do is switch my Netflix region as explained here https://goo.gl/pce4mH

I swear that I could have the worst day in my life, and reading about this revival just lifts my heart up again. I know I shouldn't be so into this, but somehow, I have nothing but faith. This has been such a big part of growing up for me, and it never really felt over. As if they have been living lives off screen for all these years with me. And now they have.

OMG they start filming today?!?! My excitement is borderline completely ridiculous. Has there been any word of a 2016 release or will post production push it back to 2017? (Just so I can know when to start procuring all the paper bags I will be breathing into.)

those final four words? I always think it could have been:
Rory saying "Mom, Luke, I'm pregnant"
or Lorelai saying "Rory, Luke, I'm pregnant" either way would be awesome

It's going to be an exchange i read somewhere. so the four words are not said by the same person. i thought of this

Rory: Shut the
Lorelai: fuck up

That's probably not it but that was the first thing that came to my mind. The words are in the scripts. Her is an interview with Lauren Graham about the revival. She's totally stoked and so am i:

Maybe "I'm pregnant". "Me too" Rory to Lorelai?

Probably not those four words, considering ASP had them planned when this series was still on network TV lol.

So apparently They started filming yesterday and Alexis Bledel is quite pregnant right now so I feel like that is kind of a spoiler that Rory will be pregnant. I know they can hide that on TV shows but I feel like they will probably just work that in... which got me thinking. They said that we would finally learn those "4 words" but I haven't read anywhere that Amy Sherman Palladino speciaifically said she stillintends to end the series with them, so maybe she starts this new series with them? If that's the case then they could very well be pregnancy related.

But if Amy planned the 4 words from years ago, she couldn't possibly know that Alexis would fall pregnant just before filming the revival? Unless it is an insane coincidence

Hmmm... this is her at the SAG Awards on January 30. She could totally pull off a not-pregnant-yet Rory for now. :)

I had a similar thought. I figured Lorelai would have gotten pregnant in S7 and the final scene would be Rory coming into the hospital room where Lor and Luke would be staring down at the little bundle. And Lorelai would look up and say, "Rory... it's a girl." And there would be the next Gilmore (/Danes) girl.

I always suspected that too, but Lauren Graham said in an interview a few days ago that it is "an exchange". So all four words aren't said by the same person.

then maybe the last 2 words is still "I'm pregnant" or "You're pregnant" lol
