Glee's Sebastian: TV's Most-Hated New Character?

It’s any young musical theater actor’s dream: A plum role on Glee. But stardom isn’t all it's cracked up to be for Grant Gustin, who plays the villainous Sebastian on the show: a new Warbler dead-set on breaking up Blaine and Kurt. Sebastian is everything Kurt is not: conventionally handsome, manipulative, slutty, and audaciously meanspirited. In his debut, in the excellent episode “The First Time,” he blatantly made a play for Blaine on a dance floor as Kurt sat at a bar and watched. Gleeks are apparently enraged that Sebastian would try to destroy the heaven-sent gift that is Klaine’s eternal love. They absolutely hate, hate, HATE Sebastian. Sadly, some of them have trouble separating fiction from reality, so they also hate Gustin.

The show’s writers are showing no signs of toning Sebastian down. In tonight’s episode, “Hold On to Sixteen,” Sebastian returns and is more aggressive than ever. He has a showdown with Kurt that is one for the ages:

Okay, how great was that? “Smirky little meerkat face.” “One of us has a hard-luck case of the gayface, and it ain’t me.” “You smell like Craigslist.” So many catty, great lines! Of course, it’s only going to make Sebastian’s H8Rs H8 him all the more. Luckily, however, someone has his back.

The Grant Gustin FTW Project is something I accidentally stumbled up on YouTube. It’s kind of like an It Gets Better video for Grant to deal with the groundswell of hatred currently being directed his way by Klaine lovers. From their description:

“The Grant Gustin FTW Project was created by Grant Gustin's Runaways in response to the negativity that Grant has received due to his new character on Glee (airing 11/8/11!) We wanted him to know that he has fans that support him in his career, despite those who may not.”

The video consists of footage of Grant singing and even a morning-show appearance with the cast of West Side Story (he was in the national tour), interspersed with Runaways members holding up various snippets of lyrics. Don’t worry—none of them are actually carved into their arms with razor blades.

So don’t worry, Grant! Regardless of whatever fatwas the Gleek nation might order against you after tonight’s episode, it gets better, FTW, etc....

why can't people separate reality from fiction? I'd run out of fingers if I had to count actors/actresses I like compared to hating their characters or vis versa.

I actually like the kick in the pants to Klaine. I like Kurt. I like Blaine. I like Klaine, but they're so sickenly sweet as a couple it's not only nauseating but may have actually given me a cavity. They are too perfect. They need a bit of fighting in their relationship, some disagreement, a rocky road or two. So I like Sebastian giving Kurt a run for his money and I love that Blaine half the time seems oblivious to Sebastian's oh so overt flirting.

Uggh "Klaine" is annoying, I get they're all lovey-dovey and that's great but they seriously need an injection of drama. Blaine not immediately being loved by all of New Directions is hardly riveting stuff, therefore, I'm all for Sebastian.

It's so sad when people can't separate fiction from reality. Now if you'll excuse me, as a part of my life's narrative, I have to run down to the corner store while performing "Singing in the Rain" while random passerbys join in for no reason.

ugh, Kurt is the most boring cry baby on the show!! Sebastian is a confident gay guy, but maybe even Blaine is too boring for him, he can do better than both of them!!!!

I hope Grant or the writers never see or hear about this article because seriously you've got to be kidding me. Don't speak for all of us Gleeks ever again, thanks.

The only people that "hate hate HATE" Sebastian are top .5% of the most psychotic of all Klainers who would hate a baby turtle if it didn't contribute positively to their ship.

I LOVE Sebastian and Grant Gustin. And almost every single Glee fan I know loves him too.

If the writers have any good sense at all they'll ignore this fraction of the glee fandom and bring Grant back as much as possible. And Dave, too, while we're at it.

Like Jeff says on "Community": "I hate Glee.. I don't understand the appeal at all"

Also, I love Community, and have always gotten the feeling that they do (secretly) like Glee. The poke jun at it just as much as Gleeks do, an are about to do a musical themed episode. There's definitely some tacit Glee love going on at Greendale

I don't like Kurt at all, he annoys the hell out of me! I do however like this newcomer Grant!

I like him, actually. He shakes up a bit the Klaine relationship which is sweet but on the sleepy side.

Besides, Glee has already its share of good/cute/lovable gays, so one that shows the catty side of the "community" is a breath of fresh air.

I like him. He makes Kurt and Blaine's relationship interesting. If it weren't for him they would have never gone to the gay club. (Although as a New Yorker that club really seemed conservative to me.) :3

he's annoying. if he's such a manslut, why does he want a boyfriend?

This question makes no sense.

first of all, when did he ever say he wanted to be Blaine's boyfriend (not that I wouldn't love it if that actually happened).

Second of all, way to slut-shame. Just because a person likes to have casual sex it OBVIOUSLY means they are not capable of desiring or committing to a long term relationship, right?

I understand the question was just a lead-in to this story about Glee, and not actually a question you're posing to commenters.

However, I'd still like to say here that Whitney is the worst new character, EVER.

He's literally the male Santana (sexy, evil and impossible to hate) lol. Also, THANKFULLY someone breathed some life into the Kurt and Blaine relationship. Kurt should send Sebastian a thank you letter because that couple was about two episodes away from buying cats, and scrapbooking

I personally love the new character and I think that he may be the jolt this show needs, especially since some of the characters will be leaving.

Can't comment due to I don't watch Glee. But I doubt he could be any worse than Whitney, or Rizzoli's mother or justin long on New Girl, or that David Spade is still on TV, most of the cast of American Horror Story. I could go on and on.

I am a huge klaine fan and I am not happy that Sebastian is trying to break them but I dont go as far as hating Grant who plays him. Though I dont want him to break them up, it does make things more interesting so I am all for his character! Grant does a great job playing him and I hope he sticks around for a while!!

Nope. The most hated new character on TV right now is Leviathan Dick from Supernatural. He killed Bobby!

Everyone likes a villain and Sue S has become boring of late. She just says the same thing over and over. She can be ignored. Bring on Sebastian. Kurt is a whiney idiot who needs to be shaken up.
