Say what you will about awards-show season (seriously, comment below!), but each awards ceremony is hard to ignore once the red carpet is rolled out. Tonight saw Hollywood welcome the red carpet of the Golden Globes, the Oscars' jealous little brother. The night is especially important for film (Oscar nominees are announced later this week, and a Globes win could sway Academy voters), but television also has a lot at stake with this ceremony the only major TV awards show until the late-summer Emmys.
HBO got off to a great start, with John Adams' Tom Wilkinson, Recount's Laura Dern, In Treatment's Gabriel Byrne, and True Blood's Anna Paquin all taking early acting awards. Paquin's a surprise here, but the others aren't so much.
If you're concerned about the lack of big-name television stars or big-name television programs, you best stop reading right now. The low-rated 30 Rock continued its dominance of the comedy category, with awards for best comedy, best actor (Alec Baldwin), and best actress (Tina Fey), and the best drama winner was AMC's Mad Men, which takes in just a sliver of the amount of people who watch network shows.
In fact, the more interesting things happened in the world of film. Kate Winslet won two Golden Globes for Revolutionary Road and a supporting role in the The Reader, Mickey Rourke started the critical validation of his comeback for The Wrestler, and Heath Ledger won a posthumous best supporting trophy for The Dark Knight. Feel-good movie of the year Slumdog Millionaire won the best drama award of the year.
Another awards show down... did the right people get their due?
