ABC News on Monday picked Chris Cuomo as news anchor of Good Morning America, giving the Primetime Live veteran and the network's senior legal correspondent a prominent role on the No. 2 morning show.
Cuomo officially joins the breakfastcast on September 5 as the news reader and features reporter, and will retain his existing positions. Robin Roberts had held the news reader job until she was elevated to coanchor alongside Diane Sawyer last year.
"Chris will do more than just read the news daily," said Jim Murphy, senior executive producer at Good Morning America. "He'll stay involved with the stuff he does really well. He's a very aggressive, passionate reporter on the crime and justice front, and we'll be using those talents on the program.
It also closes what is almost the last question hanging over Good Morning America, which made a strong charge against NBC's top-ranked Today in early 2005 but has since faltered. Coanchor Charles Gibson left in May to become anchor of ABC's World News Tonight.
Cuomo, son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo, is a six-year veteran of ABC News. A lawyer by training, he started his journalism career at Fox News Channel and has coanchored ABC's Primetime since August 2004. Among his accomplishments at ABC was snagging an interview with Joran van der Sloot, who has been questioned by Aruba authorities with the disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalie Holloway. He also covered the recent London bomb plot and was in Boulder, Colorado, last week reporting for Primetime and Good Morning America on the latest developments in the JonBenet Ramsey case.
"We feel Chris has a rare combination of talents," Murphy said. "Part of those have to do with his ability to cover lots of stories really well, his ability to book on those stories, because as you know this is a major booking war zone in the mornings."
Cuomo is no stranger to Good Morning America, having contributed features to the show even before filling in during the summer. Cuomo said one of his proudest moments was bringing to a national audience child poet Mattie Stepanek, a story for which he won an Emmy.
"The commodity for Good Morning America, the vibe, is that we care," Cuomo said. "That's what we do here; we care about stories. If it's breaking news, we care about being there first, we care about giving it to you in the most complete way. We care about what happens in people's lives."

Right now there are Texans who are fighting to keep the government from taking their land to build the super highway from Mexico to Canada. I am writting you to discuss the issue of legendaery black musicians being exploitated. My father Creadel Jones was a legendary musician and he I and our family was left in poverty despite my father's legendary sucess. My father and our family were left in povety and he became homeless, do to the exploitation of his entertainment record company. And the entertainers that worked for it including one of the Chi Lites. This resulited into my father dieing in destusion. And left me and my mother and our family in poverty. That prevented him from having a porper funeral.
My father'srecord company refused to give him any money for his funreal, as resuilt it prevented my fahter from having a denified barrel. My mother and I was lefted to battle this record company's exploitation. The revenues of my fathers music was threatend and was stolen by the owner of the record company and Marshall Thompson and these people. The first revenue check was for one hundread and fithy dollars. Despite the fact that my father song had gotten remade by Mc. Hammar the song Have Seen Her that stated number one for a month strate. And Paul Youngs remake of my fathers song Oh Girl and UB40s remake of my fathers song. My mother called the record company and told them that the sales statements showing millions of revenue and that the were not poper. After battleing the record labels for all most nine years my mother went into a stroke and stayed in a comma for month strate. As a resulit of exploitation that continued and was allowed to continue and the constend attempts to receive help by contacting Oprah Whinfery that never resulited in obtaining help are assisatance which caused futher exploitation. Despite the nomures attempts by mother and me to contact Oprah Winfery and others Oprah never responded are bother to even contact us. Marshall Thompson, a founding member of soul crooners the Chi-Lites, was sentenced to a year in prison for helping people in a Chicago suburb illegally obtain police badges, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Dozens of people, some with criminal records, paid up to $2,500 to get the badges, which authorized them to carry guns in the park district, an area whose only facility is a children's playground.
Thompson pleaded guilty in July to federal extortion charges, and was sentenced on October 10 to 12 months and one day in prison, according to the newspaper. He also was ordered to pay a $5,000 fine and serve two years' probation.
Spokespeople for the U.S. Attorney's office and district court were unavailable for comment.
Thompson helped found the Chi-Lites in the early '60s. In addition to "Oh Girl" and "Have You Seen Her," the group scored hits in the early '70s with "(For God's Sake) Give More Power to the People" and "There Will Never Be Any Peace (Until God Is Seated at the Conference Table)."
