Hanging Out with Zeke and Luther's Hutch Dano and Adam Hicks

  • 3comments

Hutch Dano and Adam Hicks aren’t your average 17-year-olds. As the stars of the Disney XD comedy Zeke and Luther, Hutch and Adam play the title characters, two best friends who aspire to be famous skateboarders. Along the way, they find themselves in all kinds of trouble. TV.com caught up with the guys to chat about the show.

Tell us a little about your characters and how you relate to them.

Hutch: Zeke is a very serious kid, he’s all about skateboarding 24/7. He’s very passionate and I feel like I can show my passion for acting through playing his role. I do think he’s a little too serious sometimes and that’s what Luther is for, they have a real ying to the yang relationship and balance each other out.

Adam: I used my practice with comedy sketches and personal experiences to create Luther. I think a lot of people can connect with him because he’s very lovable and caring but he can also be really goofy. I’m a little more serious so it’s been nice playing someone I’m not like.

Which episode has been your favorite to film so far?

Hutch: I loved filming "My Sister’s Keeper." Zeke is supposed to be babysitting his sister, Ginger, but decides to enter a skateboarding competition instead. He thinks Ginger gets in trouble so he drops out of the competition to go find her. It’s really touching story because you see Zeke and his sister’s relationship flourish more than we’ve ever seen before.

Adam: My favorite was "Airheads," where we play air guitar and create a whole band using air instruments. We take it so seriously and end up performing at the end of the episode.

What crazy things will we see Zeke and Luther do in future episodes?

Hutch: We jump a shark! He’s a great white and he’s 25 feet long. It wasn’t a real shark but it was still a lot of fun.

Adam: Today when I was filming, I was being followed by a banana and end up fighting it! I go to work everyday not knowing what I’m going to do. There are no limits to what Zeke and Luther will do.

Did you skateboard before the show?

Hutch: I started skateboarding in 6th grade. The first time I skateboarded, I didn’t really have any money for the bus and I wanted to hang out with a girl, so I decided to take out my dad’s old skateboard. It took me about an hour and a half to learn to ride and I missed my opportunity to hang out with the girl so it was a win-lose situation.

Adam: I skateboarded for about six years before I started the show, but I stopped for a while so it was nice to be able to get back into it.

Are you working on any other projects right now?

Hutch: Right now I am really busy with Zeke & Luther but I got to film Ramona and Beezus over the summer. It was great to get to work with Selena Gomez. She’s great and she’s a really generous actor.

Adam: Other than the show, I have been working on music with my co-star, Daniel Curtis Lee. We did the remix for “U Can’t Touch This.” We are also working on another one right now with our own lyrics but it’s still in the works!

What was your Zeke and Luther audition like?

Hutch: Auditions are always nerve wracking for me. For the part of Zeke, I went to three or four auditions and it was a lot of fun, it was a rush going in.

Adam: I live in Las Vegas with my family and I never realized what my parents would go through to get me to a five-minute audition. I drive now so it’s been easier. Getting the part was like a dream come true.

What other actors inspire you?

Hutch: Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino. I’m inspired by the caliber of their acting. They have a presence unlike many. My family has also been really supportive. Acting was the one thing I really loved to do and they made it happen for me.

Adam: My parents are my major supporters. I look up to Denzel Washington, Jack Nicholsen and Jim Carrey. They have all opened my mind and helped me with my craft.

What do you do in your free time?

Hutch: I love surfing! I also do skateboarding and skiing in the winter in Truckee, California. I also like hanging out with my friends and going to the movies all the time.

Adam: I spend a lot of time on my music. I have two more years of high school left and I love English, journalism, poetry, and writing songs. I am definitely going to college!

Zeke & Luther airs Mondays at 7:30pm on Disney XD.
