Harry Potter goes to war

Harry Potter is trading in his wand for a bayonet.

Daniel Radcliffe, the actor who portrays the young magician in the enormously successful Harry Potter films, has signed up to star in British broadcaster ITV's adaptation of the play My Boy Jack.

The TV movie will tell the true story of how famed author Rudyard Kipling used his clout to get his son Jack enlisted into the armed services during World War I, even after he was turned down for health reasons. The younger Kipling disappears, and despite an exhaustive search by his parents, Jack's body is never found.

"I've always been fascinated by the subject [of WWI] and I think it's as relevant today as it ever was, with young men still sacrificing their lives in the name of war," Radcliffe told The Hollywood Reporter.

The film is based on the play by writer David Haig, who will also play the elder Kipling.

Radcliffe retuns as Harry Potter next summer in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

I think that it is good that Daniel is trying something completely different than Harry Potter even though Harry Potter is my all time favorite book and all. I really think that movies that show what it was like to be someone in the war is always good for people to know especially the younger children today. Also Daniel is adorable. :)

If you've watched the recently released "Hollywoodland" you'd have seen what type-casting can do to an actor. I say hurrah for Daniel. A good actor (with a good script) crafts a new character each time out. If he does his work well, after a few minutes you won't be seeing "Harry" you'll be seeing "Jack."

I hope he can make a successful transition from childhood actor to grown-up actor. He was awesome in the Harry Potter movies so I expect he can do the same now.

I will by kind of weird looking at him since all I will think about is Harry Potter, he have been Harry for soo long that is hard to see him acting as someone different.

World War I is a very important part of British history and it's nice that Daniel Radcliffe has a sense of that. Maybe he should talk to Prince Harry. I know it's WWII that Harry is insensitive about, but still.

I think it is good for Daniel to try and put down roots in other genre's other than Harry Potter, because it isn't going to last forever. If he doesn't start now he is going to be known as Harry Potter for the rest of his life and may not even get another shot at being anything else.
