HBO Renews Game of Thrones, Veep, and Silicon Valley

HBO just renewed Game of ThronesSilicon Valley, and Veep for new seasons because HBO is no dummy. The news comes just days before all three shows return for new seasons and HBO's (opinion alert!) best night of programming is back in our lives.

For Game of Thrones the order is for a seventh season, and even though we all knew it was coming, let's all celebrate with a goblet of wine and some lemon cakes. But with the recent news that Game of Thrones may shorten seasons moving forward, the real question is how many episodes will Season 7 be? The answer as of now is, "I dunno," because HBO did not mention an episode count. However, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss recently projected a seven-episode seventh season and a six-episode eighth season.

Veep, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as the slightly incompetent president of the United States, will return for its sixth season next year, which ties it with Girls for HBO's longest-running comedy and the longest running HBO comedy since Curb Your Enthusiasm went off the air in 2011. Silicon Valley, Mike Judge's take down of the tech industry, will head into its fourth season in 2017 and is already looking like it will be a staple on HBO for years to come.

HBO still has some holes to fill in its schedule following the disappointing second season of True Detective, the lackluster Vinyl, and the departures of Boardwalk Empire and True Blood, but the Game of Thrones-Silicon Valley-Veep block is as solid as they come. Is there a better two hours of television in a week?

Speaking of True Detective - did it even get renewed for season 3?

It is a great block, comprised of litteraly every great show HBO currently has. Unfortunately HBO doesn't have anything else that's more than decent.

I'm guessing what they'll do with GoT is to produce both remaining seasons at once then hold onto the last six episodes to release later.

I can't see that happening since their reason for having shorter episode numbers is because they are finding it to hard to shoot 10 episodes a year, (shooting in multiple locations at any given time etc) the amount of work that goes into a season is staggering, they often only just finish working on episodes days before the episodes release (usually larger episodes like battle episodes). I would also imagine that if they do have shorter episodes it will be due to the larger budget for each episode they will get, as the last two season will be focused more on the War for the Dawn and I would imagine would include alot more costly scenes.

I kind of think that would be the definition of a dummy, to renew a show before you know how the latest season goes? Atleast half the latest season? For example, stopped watching Veep long ago, in the middle of a season. People talked about how last season of Silicon Valley kind of never went anywhere. If those people feels the same this season, they might drop it halfway through. Game of Thrones might be a safe bet though, i do not follow that show or any talk about it so i have no idea there.

Veep gets better and better by the season - last season was fantastic

I trust you, the show is quality stuff both when it comes to acting and writing i just got tired of all the mean cynicism or whatever we should call it. I need more positive stuff.

I don't know who these people you refer to are, but there isn't any episode of Silicon valley that has not made me laugh out loud several times (I can't say that about many current comedies). Being hilarious is the only place I need my comedies to go.

Yeah me too, i kept watching it. But i remember whiny comments from last year, like on this page and on "avclub" and other places. I just think maybe they should wait like half a season before renewing shows to see how it goes.

I hope the FANtastic VINYL gets renewed. Happy FANtastic GAME OF THRONES is officially renewed. Anyone know status of premiers of WESTWORLD and THE DEUCE? Don't care about other HBO shows.

Hi kevbuffylost108. Why do you first ask "can I ask" & then ask it before I reply? I'll guess it's your style choice? Does that answer your question? Perhaps it also creates an identity as many read Comments but pay little attention/memory to usernames? Or simply stated, I like doing it that way :)

YES! I'm just on the last 3 episodes of Game of Thrones Season 5 so I am one happy bunny to see a Season 7 renewal...the only thing is IF they are shortening two final seasons just let HBO hand out something like a 16 episode order and tell the creators they ABSOLUTELY MUST produce those 16 episodes across the supposed two series left on the contracts, I mean come on its made HBO how much money so the creators owe them big time and cannot disobey orders from their bosses surely!?

More Veep makes me SO happy! Have the first three series on DVD so a sixth season is great but make it a slightly longer series say 12 episodes!

HBO need to do one thing though...reverse their most STUPIDIEST mistake ever and give Looking a THIRD SEASON!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quiet shows can make just as big an impact on the world like any other TV series out there & we need a strong gay drama right here, right now!

There is no better block on TV and if you then add Last Week Tonight which follows it, there is nothing remotely close.
