HBO Unsurprisingly Renews True Blood and The Newsroom

Hey guys, GUYS! HBO has renewed The Newsroom for Season 2! And it also renewed True Blood for Season 6! And you know what? This isn't the least bit surprising but we're going to make it sound like it is anyway with extra exclamation marks!!!

Currently in its fifth season, True Blood continues to be a powerhouse for HBO, still raking in upwards of 5 million viewers per episode. Season 6 will be the series' first season without creator Alan Ball attached as showrunner, who is moving on to other projects at HBO. But the formula is set: Show some vampires, have some sex, cut off a guy's head here and there, cut to the credits with a vintage song, and voila! True Blood!

Meanwhile, the internet debate over the worthiness of The Newsroom will continue. The Aaron Sorkin drama about a cable-news show starring Jeff Daniels as a truthy-teller got off to a reasonable start two weeks ago with 2.1 million viewers tuning in for the debut. That's just short of the mark Game of Thrones set in its debut, and we all know how that show fared after that, if all the Dany Targaryen cosplay is any indication.

While we're at it, let's just get this out of the way too: HBO will definitely renew Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones for new seasons over the next year, too.

And if you're interested in this news, perhaps you're interested in our reviews of the latest episodes of True Blood and The Newsroom? Of course you are! Behold:

I tried watching True Blood back in the day... watched half and episode and turned that crap off. The show reeks of desperation, like its waving its arms and jumping up and down screaming, "LOOK! I can be adult, here is SEX, followed by MURDER, and here is MORE SEX for no reason!"

I have nothing against sex and violence (I love Spartacus), but the gladiator knows how absolutely ridiculous it is and behaves accordingly. TB thinks it's actually telling a decent story.

Yay for The Newsroom! And hopefully the new showrunner of True Blood will cut the cast down and get back to S1/3 type stories.

I thought Newsroom was really really dull?

Disagree. I laughed quite a bit during the premier, and even had to rewind a couple of scenes a few times to fully grasp the genius dialog.

It depends on your sense of humor. Some people think Sorkin's sense of humor (and dialog) is great. Some think it falls flat.

He's the kind of "dramedy" and those are the kinds of tv-shows he's best known for. But some people like his drama episodes (with light comedy) more than his comedic episodes (with light drama).

Honestly, it's probably what killed Studio 60. People tuned in and expected a show about a sketch-comedy show should be 100% comedy (like 30 Rock) and instead got bored with the dramedy.

I hope they tell them that season six is their last season so they can tie it all up in a nice little bow and end it on a relatively high note, instead of running it into the ground. The show has recently lost it's appeal for me, as I watched it on Sunday I was constantly checking the time to see if it was almost over, that's never a good sign for a tv show.

Same here - and this has been one of my favourite shows since it first came out. Too many boring storylines and very little of the humour that helped make it good to start with.

I have to say, I was concerned about newsroom. It is unlike HBO. There is no Vampires or annoying girls. And thus far there has been no sex scenes. But great, I think it is a keeper.

I was actually kind of worried about The Newsroom, I don't really know why, seeing as the first episode drew acceptable numbers for a HBO show, I think I just assumed a 20-30% drop for the second episode due to people disagreeing with Sorkin's views, and that the loss would warrant a cancellation.

Has he numbers for the second episode come out yet? I'm kind of surprised at a this early renewal.. But then again, Game of Thrones was renewed both times right after the second episode, same with Veep.

I hope whoever is taking over True Blood gets rid of all the useless peripheral characters that have been dragging the show down.
