Here's Your First Look at HBO's Westworld (VIDEO)

Robots are HOT right now! And HBO is getting in on the craze with Westworld, an adaptation of the 1973 sci-fi film written and directed by Michael Crichton. HBO's version is being shepherded by Jonah Nolan, co-creator of Person of Interest and co-writer of the Dark Knight films, and Nolan's wife Lisa Joy.

In the original film, amusement park robots went nutso and started killing visitors (think Itchy and Scratchy Land from The Simpsons), but HBO's version will have to go a little further than that and tackle issues of artificial intelligence and the "future of sin." And if you've ever seen AMC's Humans, you know the future of sin means sex with robots. YES! Yul Brenner and James Brolin starred in the original, HBO's version has a cast that includes Ed Harris, Anthony Hopkins, James Marsden, Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, and Thandie Newton.

Here's the teaser, which first aired before the season finale of True Detective on Sunday night.

Westworld is scheduled to debut in 2016. Needless to say I am EXCITED for this one. How about you?

The original movie did have (and predicted) sex with robots, although they didn't show anything. That was part of the allure of the Westworld park. Humans just copies from it.

I am interested in seeing how a modern take on this material. The original movie came out before the home computer. I somehow suspect it could be a combination of both the Westworld and Futureworld movies. They may even throw in a bit of the failed Westworld TV series.

I also suspect that these robots are waterproof.

Fan of the original but remember as a kid the constant fear of trying to escape an un-killable android cowboy Yul Brenner and hiding where it's heat sensors were confused. A television show has got to be some whole other animal completely but the hook seems better than a lot of the other drek gumming up the pipeline

It would be hard to recreate that for a TV series, but I wouldn't be surprised if they do have a gunfighter robot.

The trailer seems less like "robots" of the old movie, and more like manufactured life forms coming to terms with newfound consciousness. Almost more like Blade Runner than Westworld at this point. I'm still interested, assuming it's not just the latest HBO vehicle for gratuitous sex and violence.

The shot of the creation scene reminded me of the beginning of Ghost in the Shell.

Indeed. Either way, or both, that's some heady aspirations for a tale about maintenance-prone machinery that at the best of times required control rooms full of monitors to keep going.

I've been waiting for this show since it was first announced. Although the last time I remember a television show mixing sci-fi and western............

Most of the shows that have tried it have failed. Brisco County Jr. was probably the most successful at it, and even that didn't last long. Even the first Westworld TV series failed so badly it was forgotten. (Although it wasn't set in Westworld.)

How and why is Josh Brolin not in this? I can't imagine he wouldn't fit somewhere in it what with how good an actor he is and it would be cool for fans of the movie to have the father in one and the son in tother.

He might do a guest spot, which would be cool.

I'm looking forward to this, but I wonder if Jonathan Nolan's involvement in this show means that he has abandoned Person of Interest?

With POI being given only 13 episodes this year and put as a mid-season replacement, it already looks as if the show has been cancelled.

If this is a limited 13 episode series then he would have time to do both.

Am I excited for this? Gee, I don't know... Why would I be excited for a show by the same people who brought us one of my favorite shows on TV right now (Person of Interest), with a cast this good? Not to mention, the concept itself sounds like an interesting mix of sci-fi/fantasy and western elements, and the cinematography in this trailer look great.

Saying I'm excited would be an understatement. Just having Anthony Hopkins on the small screen is alone going to have me watching this.
