Hey Check Out TV.com's New Show Communities!

Greetings! It's Jen T. your friendly TV.com editor here with a big announcement. Yesterday, we quietly launched a huge new feature that's been in the works for several months now: TV.com show communities! As you may've already read in the forums, the release of our new community pages marks a new opportunity for YOU—our beautiful, intelligent, and super hilarious readers—to create original content on the site.

Basically, for a long time now we've been super impressed with the comments that so many of you write in response to our "official" editorial stories, and we want to see what else you can do. So we've decided to give you a place to post not only words, but photos, polls, links, and videos that will live side-by-side with with the stories that Tim, myself, and the rest of our editorial staffers create.

And get this: Original posts that you create on the community pages are editable. So if you head over to the Pretty Little Liars community page and write an 800-word review of last night's episode only to realize you've made a typo, it's easy to go back and fix it. (Note that comments are not editable—that option only exists for posts—but you can always delete a comment you're not happy with, as long as it's yours, or post a correction.)

The first group of shows to get the community treatment—you can always see the full list at tv.com/community—are:

Breaking Bad

Continuum

Dexter

Doctor Who

Falling Skies

Game of Thrones

Graceland

Mad Men

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic

The Newsroom

Pretty Little Liars

Sherlock

Teen Wolf

True Blood

Under the Dome

Take a look around when you have a second, and feel free to leave feedback and questions in the comments!

Also: We compiled our inaugural show list based mostly on TV.com favorites and what's currently on the air, but we'll be releasing another batch of communities soon. So obviously we'd now like to know which ones you want to see next:

If there's a show you'd like to vote for that you don't see in the poll, please name it in the comments and we'll do our best to add as many as we can.

UPDATE 7/3: We've just launched 22 more pages—check 'em out!

dear tv.com, i love the website i visit it daily but for the love of god do something about the font and its size in communities! it's big and ugly and the texts are not justified...

All shows must have a community even old ones so that fan can gather and talk about them

It looks like the second set of communities have arrived. I guess neither Modern Family or The 100 got enough votes for them to have a community yet.

It would be awesome if all of the new shows on the major networks had a community before they premiered. The first one to premiere is Sleepy Hollow, which premieres September 16.

No poll can ever be accurate if the current results are displayed before voting. It skews how people vote, and makes no sense to show it beforehand. Where is the logic in programming a poll that way?

We understand your concerns! But don't worry, we aren't going to not include shows just because they don't have a lot of votes. We're just trying to get an idea of what communities users would like to see!
1
Reply
Flag
I totally understand including shows that aren't as popular as others. That's how shows get more fans. However seeing what the vote totals are BEFORE voting totally skews how people will vote. Maybe they'll still vote for their fave, but if they see it has too many/few votes, they could vote something else. I guess it's still a vote for something else, but why spoil the results before someone can vote? Keep it blind and fair!

Don't worry, the polls are for fun! We just want to get an idea of what community pages people want. Just because a show doesn't get a lot of votes does not mean that it won't get a community page! We're just rolling out pages slowly and working on what's popular on our site first. Definitely vote for what you want to see!

Orphan Black, I'm close to finishing this season and I need people to talk to about it!
Reply

Orphan Black and Banshee, easily two of the most talked about/loved shows by site users. Justified. Hell On Wheels.
Reply

Love the new communities, but I may end up spending way too much time in them, but while I would like every show to have a community, we need a Community community, just for the sake of calling it the Community community.

I don't understand this poll and I won't respond to it!

Definitely need an Arrested Development Community. If we get it, then this website is going to be off the hook!

I am somehow having trouble with the comments editor or rather its formatting options. Some aren't working at all, some very randomly. Running Firefox 22.0 and Java SE7 U25.

Hi tobsh, can you please PM me at jessicakroeber with more details about the problem you are having? What are you seeing? What are you expecting to see happen but aren't? Screencaps would be most helpful. Thanks! -Jessica, TV.com staff

The Killing - although I appreciate it may be a minority opinion...
And on that vein, House of Lies which I absolutely love

I like that you put tabs for trending, newest & staff stories. I had just been wondering how to navigate through what's already been posted & they're already there.

A couple random ideas for the future, perhaps you've already considered them:
-Buttons to show you certain types of posts. For example, if you want to see only the polls, or just the pics.
-A better way to see older posts. These pages have the potential to get very long and having to scroll to the bottom, load more comments, scroll, load, etc. gets very tedious, as we've seen on large comment sections. Perhaps numbered pages like in the News section?
-This one is way down the line, but if these catch on and there are a large number of communities, perhaps notifications of the ones with new entries. This would be particularly helpful for shows that are between seasons when you wouldn't be visiting that community as often.

In the future, where is the best place to leave feedback?

I have one complaint, I like the individual communities (like I feel like our weird Teen Wolf/Celtic mythology conversations are in safer less judgmental places) but yesterday (Wednesday) when you saw a notification you clicked on it and you were taken to the reply or the like of your comment. But today, I'm not. Its is one thing on those shows that bow out at 100 comments, but Teen Wolf is already at three hundred and I know when TV.com started recapping Orphan Black, we made a concerted effort to keep it on the front page where I actually think several of us broke up paragraphs by sentences. it is just a lot of unnecessary scrolling.

Burn Notice and Psych, but you better hustle since the shows are nearing their ends.

Community, Justified, Castle, Big Bang Theory, Suits, Archer, and Family Guy (which gets no play on this site).

Part of me says HIMYM, but I suspect next season will be too contentious.

Veronica Mars, because of the movie? That's a weird one.

BTW, I dunno what's up with the comment notifications, but they show what appears to be an upcoming redesign and it has a font that doesn't work in Chrome, and comments don't have any linebreaks at all.

You need to add the Walking Dead, especially since Breaking Bad and Dexter are ending this season. The Walking Dead is the only other episodic that gets the same level of attention as the others(the Talking Dead) and will attract a lot of followers.

Good point. We do NOT want to anger the Dog With a Blog people, but Tim's productivity may go way down if we add a community for the show. Though we will add it to the poll nonetheless!

I pretty sure they did that because Dog with a Blog is a kid show.

Ok I've been to a few communities now, and a few functions need to be brought back.
- The back to top function when you get to the comments
- The minimised comments, unless you want to read peoples page long rants
- The notification, where you get to see only your own comment (to pedantically/psychotically check how many thumbs up you have), and not have to trawl to the bottom of a recap again.

Could it be possible to have this kind of "communities" for cancelled show? I always need to vent/fangirl/rant about Veronica Mars and Buffy...
2
Reply
Flag
I can't speak for the TV.com staff, but I'd imagine they'd want to focus on getting the communities up for current shows first, since they will probably be more active. Then, if the communities are successful enough, they might start doing the same for old shows.

That being said, since Veronica Mars is getting a movie, there may be a better chance for that getting one than most cancelled shows.

My prayers have been heard! They added VM to the list!!
Reply
Flag
Yes, you're right, that's why they didn't create a community page for each currently airing show, they're trying it out with the most popular ones. I was just wishfully thinking out loud...
Hope they create a VM one, though! I can't cope with all the news we get every day from the shooting, I need some place to give vent to all my feels!

They have a separate ranking system from the current show/episode/person pages. These rank based on if you posts get a lot of interaction from fellow fans, but on community page posts only. - Jessica, TV.com staff

I'm liking this new feature so far. It helps make us feel important. :) Still rooting for an edit button for posts though but I have to add that you MUST include the SPN and TVD communities since they both have rabid fanbases and it'll be a good place for fans such as myself to easily interact with other fans.

Last night we watched a really bad episode of Hawaii Five-Oh. Which one? Take your pick. This show makes Revolution not look so bad. But we watch it, so what's the freakin' problem? We also rewatched an episode of Life--that's the freakin' problem, that Five-Oh lives and Life died an untimely death. What does that say about us as a country?
