Hey TV.com, Should I Watch Beauty and the Beast?

Hey guys, we've screened the pilot of Beauty and the Beast, The CW's new reboot of the 1980s sorta-classic that once starred Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman as interspecial lovers. So is it worth your time? Here's a quick FAQ to help you determine this information.

What is Beauty and the Beast?

Beauty and the Beast is about a tough, orphaned cop named Catherine Chandler (Smallville's Kristin Kreuk) who forges an uneasy alliance with the handsome man-thing (Terra Nova's Jay Ryan) that once saved her life. As they bond over their common goal of destroying local hoodlums, Catherine begins to discover the sad/shocking truth about Vincent's condition (hint: It involves 9/11!) and may just fall in love with him along the way.

When does it premiere?

Beauty and the Beast debuts Thursday, October 11 at 9pm on The CW.

Who's behind it?

Writers/executive producers Sherri Cooper and Jennifer Levin both previously worked on Unforgettable and Brothers & Sisters. Gary Fleder, the director of the pilot, used to make movies (Kiss the Girls) but now works on literally any TV show that will have him (Vegas, The River, Life Unexpected). But I must point out that despite being fundamentally different in several baffling ways, Beauty and the Beast is based on a 1987 Linda Hamilton-starring TV series created by Ron Koslow.

Who's the target audience?

Women ages 10-14.

What's good about it?

Kristin Kreuk is pretty. Jay Ryan is pretty (his "beast" is more like a shapeshifter, so he looks hunky 98 percent of the time). That's about it.

Are there any not-good parts I should know about?

Almost all of them? Putting aside the very obviously stupid things about this premise, casting, and writing, Beauty and the Beast also traffics in some extremely troubling messages—including an implicit endorsement of women putting up with male rage—as well as a callous reference to 9/11 that truly proves 11 years was still too soon.

Okay, but seriously, should I watch it?

No. Unfortunately the whole thing is too boring to qualify as "so bad it's good." This thing is so bad it's bad. If, in the future, Beauty and the Beast takes a turn for True Blood-style ridiculousness, then it might be worth revisiting. But as is, this pilot is an embarrassing low point for The CW.

Do you have a clip or a trailer I can take a look at?

Drink of choice for my Beauty and the Beast viewing experience?

A soda fountain suicide. (A little bit of every soda mixed together and it all just tastes like garbage.)

Sorry you had to suffer for our benefit, Price.

Okay, so there are some things wrong with this show, not the least of which is it's level of cheese. BUT, this was just the first episode, it might course correct if given a chance.

That said, Ron Pearlman's Vincent looked like The Cowardly Lion's understudy 24/7, this Vincent kinda shifts when he gets mad... so he's like a BtVS vamp meets The Hulk? Not really getting the whole Beauty & the Beast vibe yet, especially since Jay Ryan is basically completely hot, thankfully The CW has a pretty high shirtlessness quota that he'll just have to fill soon... I'll tune in for that at least.

You know what? It really wasn't as bad as Price made it out to be... perhaps the review would have been more positive if Vincent Keller had spent some time shirtless?

I don't see how the 9/11 reference was even remotely callous. Vincent lost his brothers in the attack, which drove him to enlist in the military. I'm sorry, was there NOT a surge of enlistment after the attack? Plus, the show is set in NYC. How is it even a stretch that a character might have been impacted by the event?

It's true that Vincent's a bit lacking in the "beast" department, but he's still an exile/outcast. After all, he wants to stay away from people just in case he loses control, and the people behind his condition are trying to eliminate anyone connected to the experiment, so it's not like he can just lead a normal life.

Besides--and I'm sorry for doing this, y'all--remember Beastly? Alex Pettyfer's "Beast" was a victim of tattoos and piercings. At least this dude sort of turns into a monster.

My only real complaint is that at the end of the episode, KK was able to completely elude Vincent's enhanced senses when she managed to get all the way up to the second floor of the warehouse in an evening gown without being detected.

I just watched it. I couldn't help myself. It's one of those things you know you'll regret, but the curiosity fueling you is jet strength. Now I'm trying really hard not to be pissed Vincent isn't, you know, a beast. He's not even Teen Wolf. I'm bummed. I was hoping for, not a lion-man perhaps, but a freaking beast. He just semi-Hulks. That's it. He doesn't even turn a fun color; just a hot guy with a rad scar. Normally that would work for me, but no. Nooo!

The plot is another thing. I just...I should have listened. My childhood tears spill for a cancellation.

Not touching it... not even with a several miles long stick.

I know someone that is going to scout this for me to save me time and anger. Not only do I have my doubts about this, I'll be even angrier since this is the show that The Secret Circle was cancelled for!!!

Going to watch it... and probably wind up regretting it. This is another show (along with Partners) that I didn't deadpool only because I figured it would get to run more episodes than the ones I picked.
Reply

Also if CW wanted Beauty and the Beast you'd think they go somewhere along the lines of movie Beastly. I figure they could make that work more than this.

I like Kristin so I'll give this series a shot, honestly my expectations are really low from looking at all the previews. Anyway my thoughts come back to The Secret Circle series finale and what could have been in season two.

I'm not one for screaming "IT'S TOO SOON!!!" when TV shows deal with a tragedy, but is there such a thing as "it's too.... tacky"? Heavy stuff can and should be dealt with on TV, but only thoughtfully and intelligently-- not tacked onto a crappy show to make a character seem more "tragic".

Doesn't matter though, because it looks like this show won't be sticking around for very long anyways! Really should have put it in my Dead Pool... damn.

I believe you that it's bad, but I still have to watch at least one episode since my DVR can record it without cancelling anything else. Then I can skip through boring parts. Sounds like I'll be done watching it in 10 minutes and then I can fire up Person of Interest for the rest of the evening to end on a high note.

So they give us this in place of secret circle?

I'm sorry, but stealing the gallery's Monet (or considering all the people blowing up, dark magic and demons maybe it was a Picasso) and putting up your child's finger painting is NOT COOL. I don't care how much cheaper it was to acquire!
Reply

I don't care! I'm going to watch this crap and I'm going to dig it.

I saw it at Comic-Con and I was surprised that I didn't hate it. If they made it into an action show like Dark Angel (I know they won't) it could be interesting.
Reply
Flag
By referencing Dark Angel you almost made me want to watch this... sneaky.

But no, I have it in my deadpool for a reason.

just the pilot for me. wanna see how wrong the cw got this one.

I won't just watch the Pilot. I will watch the Pilot and the next episode. Often, Pilots aren't very good or not as good as the series becomes. Sometimes it's not fair to judge a whole series' potential on the Pilot episode. I mean, if everyone would've done that for The Vampire Diaries, we wouldn't have had three awesome seasons thus far.

If I may recycle my own joke...in the 80s version I couldn't tell which was supposed to be the Beauty, and in this version I can't tell which is supposed to be the Beast.

With the debate on there may be nothing much else to watch, so I'm taking the opportunity to check it out.

Ugh, I can't believe anyone's still sensitive about 9/11. I can understand people who knew someone that died or even someone that lived in New York at the time still being a little upset, but it was 11 years ago. After 11 years you're no long grieving, you're being an over sensitive pussy.

+1 This american assholness must stop.

A shitload of people die everyday because of their weapon-free regulations and morbid obesity, but they get soft skin for suffering terrorist attack

So, they completely violate MILLIONS of innocents around the globe to retaliate?!?

Say hello to real world, what goes around comes around. Fuckers....

Well, this person's either a 12 year old or a sociopath. Either way, their comments are irrelevant to the rest of the human race. Let the adults and/or sane people talk now.

Esme, you can't possibly have any idea how inhumane and depraved you seem. Disregarding everyone else, do YOURSELF a favor and stop talking. You'll live longer.

are you for real???

I'm French, so I don't know anyone who died that day.

However, REAL people died so unless you prove this was all an hoax, mind your speech lady....

The original series was one of the things I remember from my childhood and I remember loving it. I also remember that it was not THAT good LOL. You know, sometimes the things you love aren't perfect. Anyway, if that original series looks good now, I think I better stay away from this new one.

I'm still upset that the secret circle got cancelled and this bullocks is what replaces it

Reply

Oh please. B and B was given the time slot. It could have just as easily been given to any of the other new shows. TSC was not cancelled so B and B would have a place.
Reply
Flag
But I suppose that this was the replacement in the fact that its the one targeting the audience that TSC had, arrow wasn't likely to draw it, Hart Of Dixie, well I honestly have no idea...no one's really mentioned it.

This is worth watching just to have a gauge on how bad things can get. Perspective.
Reply
Flag
But you like almost nothing, why bother? It will only make you crankier.
Reply

Tim, I know that pulling the pin on a grenade and continuing to hold onto it will result in a bad time. I don't need to ACTUALLY do it to gauge just how bad it could be. And, to be clear, I would still choose this scenario over having to watch Beauty and the Beast.

I wish this article had just been the article title, a picture, and the word "no.", because this sounds terrible and no one should watch it.

As with anything on The CW, I'll pass.
Reply

The video clip above was enough for me to know that this is a **** no I won't watch this. Age range for this is probably spot on for the fanbase that will tune in for something more than likely being cancelled!

if he was the beauty and she was the beast it would be interesting show .. and show renamed to " Bitches be Crazy "
Reply
Flag
i think i would give "bitches be crazy" a go lol
Reply
Flag
i will try to watch the first episode , but if it didn't get me interesting i will ignore watching the rest of remaining episodes , because its obviously gonna get cancelled

and by if luck it got picked up for second season , then i think i rewatch the whole season ..

I'll watch the pilot just for Kristin and also to see how terrible it is. Might be great for a drinking game. Wonder if Kristin's the beast on the show... He looks too 'pretty' like you said.

I will watch it (well the pilot anyway!) ... This year, I've decided to be brave ! As many people, I watched the original tv show when I was a child so I'm curious, even though I hate Kreuk and the beast is quite beautiful...
Reply
Flag
You know what? I'm going to give it a chance for KK. For all we know, this is how she redeems herself for the Chun-Li movie.
Reply
Flag
The way the pilot was done was horrendous, the concept has huge amount of potential but the directors, writers and producers just didn't fair well with it.
Reply
Flag
Some shows should not be re-made. And this is one of them. There is no one better as the beast than Ron Perlman. I used to watch the original all the time, even got me to read poetry. Loved it. Will not watch the remake.
Reply

Kristin Kreuk is unbelievably beautiful, and at least OK as an actress, when she has a part that suits her. (She was perfect for that small part on Chuck). I hope she will find a good show after this one.

I'm not going to watch the pilot. I might do it in the future if I hear that the show turned out much better than everyone expected, or if I get really really bored.
Reply
Flag
Why cant I vote here either? Is it cos I'm not in the States?
Reply
Flag
Also, not only is this a pile of crap, its on where Secret Circle used to be! So even if Price said it was watchable, I still wouldnt watch it. So there. :P

Target audience ages 10-14? Lol...I doubt that ;)

I will be watching tonight just to see how bad it is.
Reply
Flag
I will at least watch the pilot, though i don't think i'll ever watch it again.
Reply
Flag
At first I was thinking, maybe I should at least try the pilot it's on after TVD and no new episodes of any other shows I watch...so why not? Then I couldn't even try the trailer so yeah...hopefully they cancel this really soon.
Reply
Flag
Isn't the whole point of beauty and the beast that the beast looks like a horrible monster, but is actually kind and gentle once given a chance? Most stupid casting choice ever, no doubt.
Reply
Flag
Tv by the numbers had a pretty good description of the show:

Finally, a Beauty and the Beast story where the beast is a super hot male model!

I would have thought that with at least one of the "Should I watch...." that's you've been doing, that you'd click on the link and it would go to a page with just a giant "NO!" on the page.

If there was one show this season that deserved it, it was this one. Missed opportunity TV.com.

I like Kristen Kreuk, but I'm not even gonna give this a try.

As bad as I think this is, I probably should have put it on my Dead Pool list. Unfortunately, I decided not to because I thought the CW would have a longer leash. So with my Dead Pool in mind, I'd recommend that everybody else watch this on TV... :)
