Hey TV.com, Should I Watch Last Resort?

By now you've seen the promos for Last Resort and thought, "Dang, that looks interesting! But is it interesting enough to watch?" Well we've seen the whole pilot, and we have some advice for you.

What the heck is a Last Resort, anyway?

Last Resort is an action-stuffed, nerve-racking thriller about the U.S.S. Colorado, a nuclear submarine in the waters of the Southern Hemisphere. But the sub's status turns to "It's Complicated" when its captain (played by Andre Braugher) receives an order to fire on Pakistan from a back-up channel that's only supposed to be used when Washington, D.C. has been smoked. Confused, the crew asks for an official order direct from the proper authorities, gets attacked by U.S. forces, and takes refuge on a tropical island that also serves as a NATO outpost, where they sit with a dozen-and-a-half nuclear missiles ready to fire.

When does it premiere?

Last Resort debuts Thursday, September 27 at 8pm on ABC.

Who's behind it?

This comes from trusty TV-maker Shawn Ryan, who brought us The Shield, Terriers, and The Chicago Code, so let's all cut the guy some slack and accept that this will be good.

Who's the target audience?

Mostly people who are tired of boring television. But there's enough here for both the flag-wavers and the Wall Street occupiers, as the program is more about honor than patriotism or defiance. And though ABC is now known for fairy-tales and Hamptons excess, PEOPLE OF THE MALE GENDER YOU WILL LIKE THIS!

Who is in it?

A lot of great actors: Andre Braugher, Scott Speedman, Autumn Reeser, Dichen Lachman, Daisy Betts, Camille de Pazzis, Jessy Schram, and Robert Patrick.

What's good about it?

This isn't just a thriller because it needs to fit into a genre, it's genuinely thrilling! And even though crazy stuff is happening all the time, Ryan's keen eye has managed to also give us fantastic characters, led by the incredible Braugher as sub captain Marcus Chaplin. And the special effects! When is a missile launching out of the water NOT cool? I could go on and on, but I'll save it for my full review.

What about the bad parts? There's something bad about it, right?

To me, no. But I could see some people having problems with the technical and military jargon. And could people being too attractive be a problem?

I need a final verdict. Watch or don't watch?

Watch watch watch. Best network pilot of this season. Worth it alone just to see Andre Braugher be Andre Braugher.

Do you have a clip or a trailer I can take a look at?

You can actually watch the full pilot episode online, but you might want to wait until you can see it on your massive 90-inch screen in HD. Here's the trailer.

What should I drink while watching Last Resort?

Fill the bathtub up with Scotch and get out your snorkeling gear. Or just put it in a glass.

Last Resort debuts Thursday, September 27 at 8pm on ABC.

Hey, Tim? I was just thinking... maybe you should rename your article something more appropriate like "Watch 'Last Resort.' Sincerely, TV.com."? It would be a lot less misleading since as it stands, the title implies that there's actually a question. It needs more conviction. WWMCD (What Would Marcus Chaplin Do)?

This may have topped Awake as my favorite Pilot episode.

Really really great. A bit scared as to where the show's gonna go next.

Just a bit of advice, be prepared for disappointed. In every single way the next episode cannot be as thrilling as the pilot was so it would not be fair to to compare them on equal terms since a pilot and second/third/etc. episodes have different 'rights' and purposes. Just keeping that in mind will surely make the second episode better, even if its already great.

WOW seriously is this show for real this is the best pilot or ''captain'' ever it felt like a movie a very good and short movie

there is only one concerne now that they are on an island will they keep the same level of excitment ?

The pilot is awesome, unfortunately this is one of those shows that has a great concept that I guess is too much for the viewer (much like Awake). I just don't see this doing well.... PLEASE WATCH IT !!!!!

I just watched the pilot. This was intense. And they set up enough mystery and conflict to keep that going for a while. I hope that a strong series follows after the pilot and not the typical quality drop of the first couple of episodes.

I am so excited about this show. I can't wait for tonight. My biggest challenge will be that I have to find ABC on my television; I'm not certain where it is. And, of course, I want to see a show that Tim actually likes. He usually hates the shows I like, so this will be a first.

I actually didn't care for the pilot. I found it too contrived and unbelievable. And they seemed to push the feminism at the start to the point of making it stand out. But I have a feeling the show is going to spend a lot of it's time on romance and character interaction and not the action the pilot had.

I have the exact feeling. Feminism, new plague of 21st century.

I already watched the pilot and it was AWESOME! In fact, it was so good that, being the fan of fairy-tales and Hamptons excess and, well, def. not male, I also think it's the best pilot of the season. (Tim, a little bit sexist there?)

I already planned on watching this but after finding out it has Autumn Reeser I was even more excited... Forever <3 THE O.C and Taylor Townsend

it's free on itunes and thats how i saw it. I for one like it because I'm suspending my disbelief of some of the technical aspects of this show. It's not perfect, it would never happen in the real world, but in the beautiful tv land that has been clutured by too much reality tv and cop procedurals, its a tense interesting alternate, slightly futurstic world that i'd gladly visit once a week. Although.... the premise feels 1 season ish, so i hope the writers know of a good way to keep i going without going LOST on us.

Andre Braugher is one of the most talented and versatile actors on television. And he's fantastic in this.

The first few minutes of this pilot actually reminded me a lot of the Battlestar Galactica pilot. It established characters first (and quickly, just like BSG) before the plot kicked in. It genuinely seemed like a crew. Fantastic.

My favorite part was the anecdote about Reagan and Brezhnev. Hilarious, but it also helped to establish Braugher's character.

I don't get it, I heard people hating on it, and I had the opposite reaction. I thought it was suspiciously well-acted. Revolution sucked more than I expected it to, but I'm not surprised it's a turkey in the vein of Terra Nova.

I had not heard of Last Resort until I watched it after bailing on Revolution halfway through. BLOWS all the other new releases out of the water. Every other remotely sciencey/non-drama new show sucks huge donkey dick, whereas if this one can maintain the first show's hooyah, I'll be a loyal viewer.

Revolution is way better than Terra Nova.

I thought both stunk equally. WTF Physics/rationality always just have to be on complete vacation in these shows? All the same annoying character archetypes, Idk, both those shows felt really absurd and banal.

I always have high hopes for post-apocalyptic shows/movies, but if I could cast my vote for a better power-goes-out setting, it would be Seattle in the series with Jessica Alba. Dark Angel. The central plot and drama was pretty hokey, but the background setting seemed to deal with the no-power situation a bit more realistically. Above all, America would come back way too quickly from such events, but you could make an interesting series on that compressed time span.

I loved the first episode but I am wary of how it will play out with them on the island... I showed it to my dad who loved it because it reminded him of the sub movies and tv from when he was a kid. I hope they can pull it off as an episodic show.

They would have had me at Andre B. because the man is incredible, and definitely would have had me at Scott Speedman, because I'm easy...Easily entertained and thrilled to see Speedman on the little screen again.

I just watched the pilot.

Can I just say WOW. That was a stunning piece of television. For a pilot episode, Last Resort has pulled out a nearly flawless first run. Please let ABC renew this series. The intensity already evident within the first ten minutes, and I can see the potential for the show to grow in depth and complexity. I'm excited for next week. I can only hope that it carries the same tension as this episode.

I really want to watch it but with how viciously anti American Hollywood is I'm kind of afraid to get invested. Tell me that it's not a script that could have been written by al Qaeda.

Yeah, would have sucked to watch something written by the CIA. Yikes!

Are you crazy? Hollywood is pro-America. The US isn't #1 at anything good anymore. The only things America leads the world in is the Military, Self confidence, Obesity rates, and Imprisonment rates.

America IS the bad guy. In real life.
Reply
Flag
Wow, your anti freedom stance is even greater than Hollywood. Didn't think that was possible. I bet you watch the al Qaeda tapes of beheadings over and over again in your spare time.

They are also #1 (very far ahead of everyone else) at television.

I'm a liberal. And I was actually shocked at the idea of making the US the bad guy. They have commercials with the slogan it's U.S. vs Us. Unfortunately since I didn't identify with any of the characters, which weren't developed at all, I related with the U.S. and when they shot a nuclear warhead over my home state, I got pretty annoyed.

You found it hard to relate to characters that were shot at with missiles when they didn't immediately comply with an incorrectly delivered order to kill millions of Pakistanis?

What do you think they should have done? Just nuke the Pakis? Do you know what a nuclear weapon does? Only the people that are the closest will die immediately. Some distance away, people are just having their skins burned to a crisp and die minutes later. People who are farther away may survive the burns only to die from the radiation, after hours, days or months of agony. It's an unbelievably horrible weapon and there is really no excuse for using it while Hannah Montana is still on the air, even if the order had been given in the correct way.

What should they have done instead of firing that warning shot? Just surrender to be killed?

How can you be shocked by the idea that people high up in the military and the government are the bad guys on a TV show? That doesn't make much sense. Especially if you watched all 8 seasons of 24.

It was a bluff since he didn't detonate it *over* Washington DC as he had threatened.

Beaches? It was far enough from the coast to not directly hurt anyone on land. (Maybe it wouldn't have been far enough in the real world, but it was on the show, and that's what matters).

They are terrorists? I strongly disagree with that label since a) they didn't actually hurt anyone, and b) their only goal is to survive. In the future, they will of course have another goal, c) to prevent a group of fanatics, who have already tried to start a nuclear war, from taking control of the USA. I don't have any problems with a person who resorts to *threats* to achieve these goals.

Breaking all protocols? He didn't. I would have supported his refusal to fire even if that had been the case, but they didn't get the order in the proper way. When they were fired upon, all they had done was to request that the order be sent the proper way.

You didn't say what you think the captain should have done instead of what he did. Nuke Pakistan? Surrender to be killed?
Flag
That is a major shipping lane, commercial fisheries, beaches, it wasn't like they detonated it off the coast of Antarctica. It's not like it's the middle of nowhere, unpopulated area. It wasn't a bluff, because he detonated it.

But just threatening to blow up Washington DC took him from a trying to do the right thing patriot to a terrorist, presenting a legitimate nuclear threat to the USA. Not only can we not allow a rogue power to threaten US civilian life, but as a nuclear power we can't allow a low-level military commander to make his/her own decision regarding nuclear weaponry. I don't think this premise is sustainable (even forgiving the idiocy of anyone deciding to launch nuclear warheads at Pakistan in the first place and then someone breaking all protocols and refusing the order and then another US boat firing at the sub...eh? whatever it's the start I can accept a silly start). But more importantly I am not on the side of the boat. I think 24 got some freedoms because it only lasted a day. He's trying to camp out there long term.
Flag
"But you have no problem that they didn't hesitate to fire that same warhead at the United States!?!"

It wasn't an attack on the US. It was a bluff. The captain was always going to detonate it at a safe distance, so that it would get people's attention, and not hurt anyone.

The only problem I have with that scene is that it probably wouldn't work in reality. I don't know if the amount of radioactive material in a nuke is sufficient to poison the fish in the region. I would guess that it isn't, but I haven't really thought it through. The real problem is that if this had been reality, I think they would probably have killed the crew of some boat in the region, or brought down a plane or two. In this TV world however, the captain knew that the detonation couldn't harm anyone.

So you could argue against the realism of that scene, but I don't think you can argue against the morality of it.
Flag
You find it objectionable that they would consider following an order--given in a combat situation. But you have no problem that they didn't hesitate to fire that same warhead at the United States!?! That they detonated it!?!? That's where it falls apart for me.

No, I didn't feel for those guys, I don't even know their names. Ben wanted to get in a fight with a SEAL for no good reason, like he had clearance to know anything about their mission, hah! Then they start not following orders, okay, sure, its the premise it's the movie, they put the sub in danger they didn't listen to the assist. SOD, because obviously they knew what they were doing?!? But when they launched warheads at the US, I didn't care what had been done to them, they were done. You don't shoot a nuclear missile over the continental US, you don't destroy the mid-atlantic--not and try to retain any moral high ground.

It was completely illogical and not in a funny way, because goodness does it take itself seriously. I have no sympathy with any of the characters. The premise is completely old fashioned and doesn't really fit in a post-9-11 military mentality. I love Tom Clancy but he's out of date. Plus, they fired a nuclear missile at the united states which they DETONATED off the eastern seaboard, creating a natural and economic disaster, to you know, teach the USA a lesson. I"ve learned it: change the channel.

I'm loyal 20-year old Clancy fan. I didn't think about the connection until you mentioned it, but it makes me like the show even more. He's at least a better writer to adapt than half the stuff they make for tv. Can you imagine if they did Red Storm Rising?

On top of that, from their location their missiles only have the range to reach Alaska and Hawaii, and for some unknown reason the writers completely understated how many missiles that sub carries, on top of that the nuclear missile Ohio class submarines aren't used to support special operations - that's restricted to non-nuke Ohios converted for this purpose and attack subs. The purpose of Ohios is to stay silent, hidden, out of danger.
Reply
Flag
It's a fictional sub, so I don't mind if they take some liberties with those details. It may not be standard to support special operations with one of these subs, but this was far from a standard situation.
