Hey TV.com, Should I Watch The Mindy Project?

Friends, we've screened the pilot of The Mindy Project, the new Fox sitcom created by and starring The Office's Mindy Kaling. So is it worth your time? Here's a quick FAQ to help you determine this information.

What is The Mindy Project?

The Mindy Project is a half-hour single-camera sitcom about Mindy Lahiri (creator Mindy Kaling), an overachieving OB/GYN who makes tons of terrible life decisions mostly due to the fact that everything she knows about life she's learned from rom-coms. After making a fool out of herself at an ex's wedding and getting herself arrested, Mindy vows to get her life in order. She then immediately finds herself torn between two ill-advised romantic prospects, hunky British doctor Jeremy (Ed Weeks) and hunky New Jersey doctor Danny (Damages' Chris Messina).

When does it premiere?

The Mindy Project debuts Tuesday, September 25 at 9:30pm on Fox.

Who's behind it?

Creator and star Mindy Kaling is best known for playing Kelly Kapoor for eight seasons on The Office (and also writing several dozen episodes of that show). Fellow The Office vet B.J. Novak produces.

Who's the target audience?

Women of all ages should identify with the characters and rom-com tropes, but the humor is just edgy enough to keep men from growing bored. (Women/men generalizations are always accurate, right?)

What's good about it?

The writing is snappy and clever without being show-offy, and the storytelling is compelling and unpredictable. Kaling herself is an incredibly engaging, self-effacing lead. The pilot features appearances by Bill Hader and Ed Helms, so it's clear Kaling has good taste in co-stars.

Are there any not-good parts I should know about?

I'm not totally sold on the love-triangle aspect of The Mindy Project, but I get that it's a major romantic comedy trope. Hopefully we won't become super tired of it too quickly.

Okay, but seriously, should I watch it?

Sure! It's one of the best new comedies of the season.

Do you have a clip or a trailer I can take a look at?

Drink of choice for my The Mindy Project viewing experience?

In the spirit of the lead character, perhaps Green Apple Puckers and/or tequila shots. (Drink to excess.)

This shocked the heck out of me tonight; I expected to have to turn it off halfway in revulsion, but shoot, it was ACTUALLY REALLY FUNNY. Now I wish I'd recorded it in case it doesn't live 13 episodes.

I died laughing at her Eat Pray Love comment, "Oh no then I'll have to pray. Ah I'll just die alone." No idea but I found this hilarious. For that alone I'd watxh it again!

I thought it was terrible. This "Mindy" character acts like a spoiled third grade girl, very annoying, with no real redeeming qualities, or any reason to root for her. Also, the rest of the characters don't really seem all that interesting, and just seem to kind of move her story along. It also seems like it's trying too hard to be "cute," and the jokes just weren't really there. I'll pass.

Did not have great expectations for this but it is one of the better pilots of the season. I was pleasantly surprised and hope that it only improves from here

I'm passing, the promos have really put me on edge, there's something annoying about the way they're portraying her. She's a funny actress but it's really her writing I enjoyed, so I'll wait and see how the first season sounds before I give it a try in reruns.

This was a horrible show. Horrible. First, Mindy is a lunatic that shouldn't be anywhere in the medical profession unless she is locked away in a mental asylum. Because for one, she has an offset of Truman Show Delusion, which means that she instead of thinking she is in a reality show, she thinks she is in a romantic comedy a and lets that guide her life . Second, she puts off a patient to eat dinner with a guy. Third, she is a moron. Fourth, she received (or should have) received a DUI for riding her bicycle while drunk. So at what point would any medical board approve her. I have never seen a character that was so immediately grating, even Zooey on New Girl I could stand until the episode where she was sprayed with the toilet. But this character is just annoying. There is no redeeming feature of her, and if I can't buy her being a doctor instead of a mental patient then the rest simply falls flat.

I like Mindy Kailing, I liked her when The Office was in its prime, I have liked her characters in movies. But this is too much. It is that bad.

Did you watch the show? Because I remember quite well that when it came to her job as a doctor, Mindy had it down to a "T" and she took it seriously. It's only her social life and love life that's a mess.

Yes I watched the show. She didn't want to take a call from a patient because she was on a date. The night before she was driving while drunk. And it still doesn't resolve the fact that she is delusional. Now I am not a member of the AMA but I am pretty sure that isn't a great representation of a professional doctor. And since the other doctor is getting all of her clients. I would say that her being a moron coupled with all the above, is having a negative affect on her job performance.

I was expecting to enjoy this but I don't think I laughed once at the pilot. It looks like something that might get better so I'll probably watch another episode or two when I have nothing else to do but it's not something I absolutely cannot miss.

I really enjoyed the pilot, but I think this show is a bit too girly for a lot of guys. At least my guys... I was laughing my ass off while my boyfriend and brother left the room to play cod...

So instead of enduring an occasional romcom movie with my wife, I can schedule it repeatedly every week? No thank you.

The answer to for me is a big NO! I couldn't even get through the pilot. I don't recommend it.

i'm going to watch it! Well I really want to stick with it throughout it's entire run, but once Apartment 23 (or is it Happy Endings? It's one of them) starts running up against it, I'm going back to them. I wish I had a DVR!

The "I learned from rom-coms" conceit was too horrible and overdone for me to even get past. I was done in the first five minutes.

I'll probably end up giving it a try, but I'm mostly hesitant because of Mindy Kaling. I'm not exactly sure why so many people like her... she's sometimes funny, but generally annoys and bugs me more often than not.

Anyway, I think this has as good a chance of being good as it does being horrible, so I'll watch a couple episodes and see if it's for me.

i'm not sure why people are acting all luke-warm with this one, as if love triangles will only exist in this show.

chris messina is adorable and the best so why are we discussing this?

Yep I think I'll try out this one. Hopefully it's better than The New Normal.
