History Renews Vikings for Season 5 and Adds Jonathan Rhys Meyers

Your Thursdays nights will stay hairy. History has ordered a fifth season of its hit drama Vikings, adding 20 more episodes to the aggro tale of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel). The announcement comes as Vikings is in the early goings of its 20-episode split fourth season.

Season 5 will add Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who we've seen suit up in The Tudors and Dracula, and who might be the series' most recognizable face yet. There are no details on his role, but I'm guessing he'll play some asshole British royal who finds the Norsemen to be troublesome pests.

I'm a few episodes behind on this current season, but from what I've seen, Vikings has a lot to cover as it spends time in several different regions of Europe, so more episodes are very welcome!

Who do you think Meyers will play?

If Ragnor dies so will the series and the viewers

Rumors says that he will play the role of Rollo?! I'm not sure if I believe that, but for sure, Clive will not be in the 5th Season. It has been rumored, though, that he will come as a guestplayer (wich is why I don't believe that Jonathan will take over his role). Let's wait and see ;)

Loved that we are gonna have more vikings! But I think 20 episodes it's too much, just keep it like before

Realistically there's only so much Ragnar did in his time on earth, and we are presumably getting closer to the bear pit ... or too a series too thinly stretched to make historical sense, unless the writers choose to give us Bjorn's Mediterranean adventure plus some of the exploits of Ragnar's other kids, especially Ivar. With a little creativity the show could immortalize the Viking period of raiding Europe and exploring west to America, but the actors playing these roles would have to be compelling as Ragnar was not among the latter nor did he serve with his sons in their conquests.

They're visibly stretching out scenes. No way is there enough story or action to fill 20 episodes. Quality has really declined I think.

Glad to hear that the Vikings were renewed for another year. This season has been kind of slow and boring until the last 2 episodes with Bjorn's transformation into a total badass and our dear Lagertha's wedding day jitters :) Sure didn't see that coming but looking back I guess it could be expected. Hoping things pick up for Ragnar, not caring to much for his story line now. He's in depression for the loss of Athelfstan and heading for addiction problems.
JRM could play many roles. Another priest, English noble. roguish Frenchman or another land grabbing Viking. He has the same coloring as poor Kalf , maybe a disgruntled relative of the departed. Anyway waiting to to see the fallout from this weeks events and the return to Paris.

She told Kalf in Paris that she was going to kill him when he least expected it. Woman of her word. I wondered if she is really going to have a baby or lied so he would ask her to marry him so she could kill him in a big show of strength.

Good memory, things seem to go over my head at times. Started to turn on CC to get all the names straight. It also helps where accents are concerned.

Hating season 4 but for JRM, I will persevere. Hopefully he inspires Ragnar to grow his hair back. I'm in this for the hot guys with hair, not hot skinheads (whatever this look is)

Very (very!) glad for season 5. Very ambivalent on JRM. Vikings worked perfect until now as an almost no-name show. A bona fide star sounds a little off... Best guess (given his star status) as to his role: he's gonna be Ragnar's biggest rival/ nemesis.

This the biggest 'named actor' the series has gotten so far; therefore, he's probably playing someone important. Outside of that, I don't like to speculate.

The Tudors is a good series.

To that end, I don't know why NetFlix would do a show on Elizabeth II instead of doing one on Elizabeth I.

I would have said Gabriel Byrne was more famous, with a more solid acting career than JRM... OK, he was Ragnar's first great antagonist and was offed during the first season but still...

Who? Someone having a "more solid acting career" doesn't make that person a 'named actor'.

Thanks for reminding me of this dude. Been a while since I last stalked him. On imdb, not IRL

I don't think he'll necessarily be British, but I don't see him being one of the Vikings either. He could be French, or they might introduce yet another country in season five.

Just to be clear--not saying the French are annoying, but that JRM would make a very annoying Frenchman.

For some reason the idea of him as a Frenchman just pisses me off in advance. Unless he's supposed to be a super annoying Frenchman.

He could probably pull that off. Actors grow and change, I could be giving him short shrift. I like him, I just thought he was not a great fit to play the "jupiterian" Henry VIII. He's more saturnine. But in the right role he will probably be an asset, and again, I trust the show.

I had a like/hate relationship with The Tudors but JRM could be a nice addition to this cast so long as they make him British, which is the only thing that would make sense. No guesses on who he might be. But I trust the show, and getting season 5 is gratifying enough. Good news!

If Ragnar survives this season, then I would guess Rhys would play Northumbrian who defeats Ragnar and delivers him to his King, who have sworn to destroy him. Somthing like Ceasar in Spartacus.

I'd be surprised if they killed Ragnar this season, he hasn't even had his youngest son Halfdan yet in the show.

You're right, Alex..., but as they are not following the history line, they could choose not to include Halfdan in the show. Also remember, that Ragnar Lodbrock is known only through the sagas, not in the history books. In this show they are putting together a lot of different stories, and fit them to one single person.
I think Ragnar will be killed in the end of Season 4, and I think there will be quite a time-gap between the first 10 and the last 10 episodes, where the sons of Ragnar have grown up to be young men. In fact Michael Hirst said, that eventually Ragnar would die, and his sons (being young men!!!) would continue this adventure. Quite exciting! :)

P.S. Really love what they have done with Bjorn. At least if Ragnar goes, Bjorn now is fit to take his place.

Bjorn walked into Hedeby last week looking like a total psycho. Very Ragnar-esque. I thought for sure Elender and Kalf were toast.

I don't know who he'll play. I think most of actual historical figures are already covered. So he'll either play some new Northman or there will be a time jump and he'll play one of Ragnar's kids, Ivar or Ubba.

I have no idea who he'll play, but I'm so happy Vikings is renewed for another season. Season 4 has been great so far.
