Holy Shtako! Syfy Renews Defiance for Season 2

I hope Jaime Murray loves getting painted white and giving her son extra-friendly hugs in sexy alien momwear, because she's in for a whole 'nother season of it. As expected, Syfy has renewed its alien epic Defiance for a second season with an order for 13 more episodes for 2014. The order comes four episodes into the science-fiction drama's first season (here's Noel's latest review!).

Defiance's premiere was Syfy's second-largest series premiere ever, and the show has become its highest-rated series of the year. The series is also part of a huge multimedia project, as a Defiance massively multiplayer online game is currently available for PC, Xbox, and Playstation and shares the same universe. As showrunner Kevin Murphy told us earlier this week, stories between the two platforms will start to converge in next week's episode.

Set in the near future, Defiance tells the story of a post-apocalyptic earth that's been settled by a collective of alien races. It stars Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Stephanie Leonidas, Tony Curran, Jaime Murray, Graham Greene, and Mia Kirshner.

I did really enjoy defiance but really all i want is farscape. I read somewhere a long time ago they were going to continue after peacekeeper wars with webisodes. Does anyone know if there is truth to that.probably not -dies-

Best show on SyFy since Farscape. Don't care if some don't like it, because I love the ever evolving characters and plots. Love it!

Wow! I didn't get past the first 2 eps but with all the hype, I knew it'd get renewed. I'm not starved enough for sci-fi to watch this show. Happy for the fans though.

Good. It is better than Revoluton, but thats not saying much. Still it is slightly above mediocore and lets hope it will get better.

Yay! Now we have enough playtime in this ginormous sandbox to build a very cool castle.

I LITERALLY was only watching TWO sci-fi shows before Defiance came along (Continuum and Orphan Black - Go Canada!), so I am very pleased to read this renewal news. Defiance could flourish into something great. And it's the ONLY show I'm watching that has aliens, so it has that going for it. It's no Fringe or BSG, but I'm starving for sci-fi, and it's been good enough to make me hopeful for the future.

I think Defiance is terrible. But couldn't agree more about the other shows you mention. And Fringe.... well.... a masterpiece. Nothing will compare to it.

Thank you from Canada. ;) Continuum is really great and this season is looking even better. I absolutely agree with the rest of your comment, Fringe and BSG you know...
I will surely look for Orphan Black, I had no idea it existed...
Just watched the trailer, looks good, I'll check it out. It's from Britain though, not Canada. There's some great smaller budget shows. It made me think... Look for Banshee if you didn't already.

No, Orphan Black is Canadian made and the wonderfully versatile lead actress, Tatiana Maslany, is Canadian. As a proud Canuck, I am sure of this.

I thought it was from BBC at first. You're right, I just looked on IMDB.

Yes, and Orphan Black is very very good. Great characters and Tatiana Maslany is an amazing actress in it.

This could either be the best decision SyFy has ever made. Or the worst one.

I am SUPER happy I have loved this show since the Pilot and I am so anxious too see how Season 1 ends and how the characters and the world develop come Season 2, way to go Syfy, however I REALLY wish they would of kept Alphas!

Meh, I would prefer that its budget gets allocated to something else.

Like what? Another reality tv show or wrestling?

A few licenses that come to mind are Stargate, BSG and Star Trek. I have no idea if any of the producers/studios for those want to do a new series, but it seems like Defiance has a pretty healthy budget for a SyFy show.

They are going to do more reality and wrestling no matter what since that is how they pay the bills.

Frankly, seeing how they've handled Stargate and BSG (last season) and its offshoots, I rather not jump on that same ride again... Netflix, Canadian tv, premium channel, or some other method, but not Syfy.

Syfy no longer stands for Scifi and I doubt Defiance will last long. Defiance has a decent start, considering that BSG's first season was awful.

I am surprised SyFy has not rebranded itself again by calling themselves DEFYANCE or something. The show is on almost literally every night now.

Ugh, terrible. Why can sci-fi/futuristic wastelands be done without being cliche or cheesy. I dont even mind low budgets but really... and the tie in to a game? Far for people would have played an Alphas game. And they cancelled that greatness to free up money for this crap. Death to Sy-Fy@!!

I'm glad they are giving the show a chance to develop. It's more than halfway decent. Give it time, and it could be great. I loved SG and SGA, but even they took more than a few episodes to become as awesome as they were at their best.

Wow,wow,wow...stop right there!!!...SG,SGA and even SGU were awsome from the get-go!!! Each had awsome cast, acting, stories, setting, development, etc. What you did was blasphemy!!! :D

I never said they were bad. But, they were good, not awesome, until at least mid season 2.

No,no,no...they were, they are and they will be awsome from get-go!
The Torment of Tantalus episode is my top 3 episode of SG-1.

Po-tay-toe, Po-tah-toe. ;D It was a good ep. But, sadly, those shows are not here. Defiance is the best of what is out there, sci-fi wise.

Sweet, its nice its sticking along for awhile. i needed my scifi fix

It's no Revolution or 1st season Falling Skies...and from the beginning I saw this as a show that could improve and become better. It already has a pretty good cast and better writing than the first two shows I mentioned and better writing than most new shows from the broadcast networks. Does it deserve the renewal? Yes Is it the best? No but so far it's good.

YYYYEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
This is great news, maybe this new SyFy programming director is telling the truth about bringing SyFy back to SciFi! This is the first legit science fiction Alien show since BSG and Stargate Universe, hopefully they let this show play out for years to come, there is tons of story and the game is also creating additional story lines too so they have lots to work with and they have done a great job so far and this is a win for all of us Old School Science Fiction guys.

Good news eh but this show still isn't as good as 'Caprica' was or even as cool as the 'Blood and Chrome' pilot that aired this year that never turned into anything (Why didn't they make a show of that???).

They kind of did, Machinima picked it up and turned it into a bunch of short episodes before rolling it into a kind of TV movie. However I agree with your point. This new attitude does feel like, too little too late.

Defiance is mediocre at best, they've also shoved just about every possible cliché into the show they could think of. Giving us this after cancelling so many great shows, not even bothering to give shows with potential a chance.

Anyway! Check Blood & Chrome out, it's not long but it's definitely great!

What I meant was why wasn't that really fantastic pilot not purchased for series? It was miles better than 'Defiance'. This cast hasn't had a single scene between actors this entire series that has been as compelling as Luke Pasquelino and Ben Cotton were in that well written and acted pilot. This cast has two actors, Jaime Murray and Graham Greene, and a lot of 'shtako' -- with the exception of sheriff's daughter who isn't around enough, the young actors in this cast aren't very memorable and that is 1/3 of the cast. Romeo and Juliet were suppose to be memorable characters weren't they? Great young talent seems to grow on trees in Canada and this is the best they could come up with for this big show? (Its cause the script sucks.) Why didn't they give the Sheriff part to the Sheriff they fired, Colin Ferguson? Grant Bowler will never be more than a TV movie actor the decision to give him the lead on a show boggles the mind. Tahmoh Penikett could have been the lead on this show as well.

as someone who didn't like the other stargates aside from the movie I find it kinda odd. I feel like SG:U was far more mature and higher quality.

Great news, was somewhat reluctant to trust a renewal, but tbh its not a bad show in line with Stargate. Pleasure to watch.
Now if only Vegas would also get renewed I'd be a happy panda:PP

Always glad to hear TV sci-fi getting a break and I rather like this one as it has some decent potential. Like the characters - both the good guys and the bad guys and it's not perfect - yet. But given how it's going and Kevin Murphy giving his new fans a listen is a very good sign we will have something good to watch for a while. It's no Fringe, but nothing is ever likely to be that good for a very long time - if ever. And two more words of encouragement for good sci-fi - Orphan Black...

From the sounds of the recent Twitter interview, it sounds like they've already got season 2 plotted out. I am really enjoying the show, can't wait to get a copy of the game and will be anxiously awaiting the second season.

I'm glad, but with all the negative comments here I was surprised at the ratings. With the success of Defiance and Warehouse 13 let's hope SyFy gets confident for another sci-fi show and have a tremendous sci-fi Monday line up.

Actually, Warehouse's ratings are not great. It loses a really good chunk of Defiance's audience - 2.152 overall / 0.996 age demo for Defiance and 1.275 overall / 0.585 age demo for Warehouse 13.

I can't figure out how SyFy is keeping scripted shows that get below 2.5 overall basic cable viewers (and therefore less for that 19-49 demo) on the air.

Even with very bad special effects, Defiance delivers a well packed TV Show. I hope to see more of world besides Defiance

Agreed, Orphan Black and Continuum are still holding down the science fiction mantle for a channel that makes cheap ghost cooking shows and wrestling. So glad for Orphan Black s.2!

Whoops! Orphan Black is BBC america. A channel that seems to enjoy producing its science fiction lineup.

And Continuum is Showcase (Canada). SyFy just bought the rights to air it (months after the Canadian airing).

Battlestar Galactica was epic, but it's done. Caprica was good but not well received. So I'm just glad we have Defiance and Orphan Black - and Continuum to watch and root for. Blood and Chrome could be good, but I'm not holding out hope for that one. If they do it, I'll surely watch it...

BSG was the best, but you are 100% correct that Orphan Black, Continuum and Defiance (in that order) are great shows.

You even got the order correct, you're a pip...

Which Pip is that Murder... a dice spot, pineapple segment, plant root ooorrr... Great Expectations or South Park Pip? Please don't let it be the latter sweet baby Jesus haha
Flag
Break off? Syfy is not Sci-Fi. We're lucky to get what few programs we get these days, so let's be thankful for what we've got. I doubt we'll see another major science fiction entry until this one is canceled. Don't worry, I'm sure a Blood and Chrome series will happen eventually.... and then get canceled in favor of something else. Hopefully, that something won't be a reality series.
