How I Met Your Mother: Let's All Name Our 10 Favorite Episodes

With almost a full week left to go before How I Met Your Mother returns for the final leg of its nine-season marathon of love, now is the perfect time to look back at the first eight-and-a-half years of Ted's journey and fondly recall some of his and the gang's greatest adventures. So let's do exactly that! I've gone ahead and selected my 10 favorite episodes from the show's catalog of more than 200—some made the list because of their legendary antics, some earned a spot because they still make me laugh even after multiple viewings, and some weaseled their way in because they packed a a memorable gut punch. While they aren't necessarily HIMYM's all-time top 10 best episodes, they're the ones that stand out to me as classics I'll never grow tired of. But since my list is bound to look different than yours, go ahead and share your own in the comments!

"The Pineapple Incident" (Season 1, Episode 10)

Seriously, where did it come from?

"Swarley" (Season 2, Episode 7)

"No more "Swarley!" No "Swarles!" No more "Swar-LAY!" No more "Swar—wait for it—LEE!" No more "Bob Swarleyman!" No more! No! It's over! Do you understand?"

"Slap Bet" (Season 2, Episode 9)

Not only did it introduce us to the Slap Bet, it also gave us our first glimpse of Robin Sparkles. Remember, the '80s didn't come to Canada 'til like, '93.

"Arrivederci, Fiero" (Season 2, Episode 17)

Featuring the introduction of zitch dog and Marshall's love for The Proclaimers' "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)." Also, we learned that Barney can't drive.

"The Bracket" (Season 3, Episode 14)

The gang's own version of March Madness.

"Intervention" (Season 4, Episode 4)

"I do not like that stupid hat, I want to beat it with a bat. Or maybe stab it with a fork, it makes you look like such a dork."

"Girls Vs. Suits" Season 5, Episode 12

Neil Patrick Harris singing about suits. I'm not sure this one needs any more explanation.

"Natural History" (Season 6, Episode 8)

From Robin and Barney touching all of the museum exhibits to Ted whispering "poo poo platter" across a crowded museum, this one sticks out as one of most immature—yet still hilarious—episodes of the entire series. Also: "Oh my God, you have a monocle! Is this real? Is this really happening? Good luck killing James Bond!"

"Symphony of Illumination" (Season 7, Episode 12)

Finding out at the end of the episode that Robin couldn't have children was one of the worst/best gut punches HIMYM ever threw. Completely unexpected, and completely devastating.

"Something New?" (Season 8, Episode 24)

And that's how we met the Mother.

Your turn! What are YOUR 10 favorite episodes of How I Met Your Mother?

I would love to point out that while I've read as many as 7 lists on various websites pointing out favorite episodes of HIMYM, this is the first I've seen with Arrivederci Fiero on the list! That disappointed me because it is definitely one of my most memorable episodes! I actually really enjoy your list and agree on basically the entirety of it!

I don't know that I can name ten episodes off the top of my head...I've loved all the Slap-Bet episodes, and the episode where Marshall met Lily in the airport with a marching band - that was so sweet! Plus Girls vs. Suits featured the ever-wonderful "Nothing Suits Me Like a Suit"! And I loved the episode where Robin sang "Two Beavers are Better Than One", that was priceless.

#1 for me will always be The Bracket. Quintessential Barney shenanigans. I can't do 10 off the top of my head (nor do I know all the proper titles), but I am also a fan of Marshall & Lily's wedding (the HAIR CUT!), Slap Bet, Slapsgiving, the one where Ted finds out he's a porn star... oh, and Spoiler Alert! I had to look that one up. To this day, my husband and I make the glass smashing noise when someone reveals that annoying thing about someone!

Thanks for not nominating any of the episodes surrounding Marshall's father's death. That was a stomach punch too far, IMO, and the series has suffered for it.

The one in which they lick the Liberty Bell. I swear, me and my brother got crazy drunk one night and did our own version at the Dom Tower (Utrecht, Netherlands). We even made friends do it.

Yes! This one too. "We are international businessmen on our way to an important meeting..." It also features Marshall singing his thoughts ("Our relationship is build on mu-tu-al trust"), later an important point in Spoiler Alert.

pineapple incident, nothing good 2 am, come on, swarley, something blue, bracket, naked man, bad news, something new, hym met me

PIneapple Incident: The first truly great episode of the series for me that made me realize they were onto something

Nothing good happens after 2 am: A great morale to the story and the self-destruction of Ted's plan was great and reminiscent of Scrubs' "My best laid plans" when JD fumbles everything.

Come On: The first season finale was great and the last scene of Ted on top of the world having landed Robin while Marshall had lost everything hit home and sticks with me to this day.

Swarley: "I have a call for Swarles Barkley" says it all. Amazing episode.

Something Blue: I enjoyed the wedding of Marshal and Lily mixed with Ted and Robin's story constantly having the viewer change their opinion to what was happening between them. Opposite of season one, Ted loses everything while Marshall marries the girl that almost got away.

The Bracket: One of the best Barney episodes just classic stories and debates all around.

Naked Man: Solid episode and I enjoyed Barney and Ted each coming up with different ways to do it. Landmark episode for the series IMO.

Bad News: Everything from the countdown to Jason Segel's great acting when we discover his father is dead was just amazing. His "I'm not ready for this" line as the camera pans out was sad and hit home.

Something New: Finally we get a glimpse of the mother and the set-up towards the show's endgame. Listed here based on importance if not quality.

How Your Mother Met Me: While it should have been an hour long, it was still a great episode and a nice trip on the mother's journey to meet Ted.

"Okay, Awesome" - has to make the list! The club being closed-captioned the whole time was hysterical, and then everyone yelling when they come out because they can't hear is so true to life!
"The Limo" is also a gem, for introducing us to Not-Moby.

I don't think any episode after season two can be in the top ten, because the whole 'who's the mother' thing was a mess from season three onwards. And that was the point of it all.

Man its tuff narrowing down the top 10 episodes of this great series. I picked the standout episodes plus the ones that are funny to me. I also put my honorable mention episodes as well, here you go:

Honorable Mentions:
The Pilot: you cant get anything going if you dont take off and the beautiful thing about the HIMYM pilot is even in its 9th and final season this events in this episode are referred to always and often
The Naked Man: Due to some revelations made in the final season in regards to this episode it had to atleast garner a honorable mention. Its one of those episodes of the show you find yourself always laughing at

Top 10:
10.Spoiler Alert: this episode really has no true effect on the main shows plotline of the mother but its one you can watch over and over. What makes this episode is how the characters hilariously points out one anothers flaws.
9. No Tomorrow: there are plenty of episodes in the series where its Ted and Barney out on the town with trouble not to far behind but the events of this particular episode we are (unknown to us and Ted) the closest to the Mother we have been so far and we are introduced to the shows talisman- the infamous Yellow Umbrella
8. How I Met Everyone Else: this of course makes the list because well the title says it all, it goes in depth of how the gang came to be. I think the thing that puts this episode over the top is the character of Blah Blah
7. Pineapple Incident: well the obvious reason this show makes my list (and everyone elses) is because still to this day we all want to know how Ted came by the infamous nightstand pineapple. Because Future Ted said the fruits origins are unknown we live the show this fall wondering. According to the shows creators its something they wont reveal (on the show at least) when the series finally wraps this fall and its their single biggest regret of the series. The pineapple i think will go down as one of tvs greatest unsolved mysteries. Another reason i love this episode is its the 1st of 2 appearances for the gorgeous Danica McKellar.
6. Symphony of Illusions: this is one of only 2 episodes in the series (see below for the other) that is told from somebodies POV other than Future Ted. The thing that makes this one top 10 worthy is the reveal towards the end, it certainly pulls at the heart strings.
5. Something New: the season 8 finale and the 2nd newest episode on this list makes the top 5 form one reason- we finally get to see the Mothers face (although it was the final scene)
4. Girls vs Suits: The series 100th episode cracks my top 5 for 2 reason: Barneys musical number about his favorite attire to wear, and Stacy Keibler as McClarens hot new female bartender.
3. The Playbook: i didnt start out following the series, i like a few fans caught it when it began running in syndication on different networks. The one episode that caused me to have a HIMYM netflix weekend was this one. The Scuba diver and the Lorenzo Von Matterhorn, enough said.
2. How Your Mother Met Me: The newest episode on the list and the shows 200th entry is told from the Mothers POV and sums up what she has been up to from the series pilot till Barney & Robins wedding weekend. It was beautifully done and we truly get an insight to the future Mrs Ted Mosby and how we are on the verge of their meeting. This episode truly showed the journey the show began on to the end that is very near.
1. Slap Bet: i mean really was there any other choice for the top spot. looking at some of these list not only is Slap Bet not #1 but didnt make somes top 5. This episode is the series best because it introduces us to two of the shows best running gags, the Slap bet between Marshall and Barney and Robins Canadian teen pop star alter ego Robin Sparkles. You aren't a true fan of HIMYM if you dont know the Lets Go to The Mall.

@mjmorrison88....... eh?

"10.Spoiler Alert: this episode really has no true effect on the main shows plotline of the mother but its one you can watch over and over. "

Almost none of the episodes past season 1 have any true effect on the plotline of the mother. Just occasional veiled clues that could mean anything or nothing.

Chronological order, and probably forgetting a few. I just picked the biggest standouts to me, and so it wound up being more emotional episodes than funny ones. But almost every episode of the show has such rewatchability that I couldn't include episodes just for humor.

Come On - Just because that final scene still makes me choke up.

Slap Bet - Robin Sparkles, part 1. Nuff Said.

Ten Sessions - 2 minute date? Most romantic thing ever.

Sandcastles in the Sand - Can you tell I like Robin Sparkles?

Old King Clancy - Still makes me laugh.

Right Place, Right Time - For some reason, this episode (particularly Stella's speech to Ted in the car) and the rest of the end of season 4 are a gut punch right to the emotions for me.

Girls Vs. Suits - I really did like season 5, but this was the only true standout episode for me. What isn't there to like?

Bad News/Last Words - I combined these two because of the continuous storyline. But the whole thing was done so beautifully, and I still rewatch the former to find numbers on the countdown. As for Last Words, Robin as the funeral Mary Poppins is a series highlight for me.

The Final Page - Say what you want about Barney's manipulative proposal, but it was incredibly romantic, and manipulation is part of who he is. It's why we (and Robin) love him.

How Your Mother Met Me - Cried from beginning to end, mourning for the Mother, mourning the coming end of the show, and brought to tears by "La Vie En Rose."

Those s*x jokes were hilarious and out of character for the show.

Commenting on the camera man using only one hand, Robin Thicke's face and pose while they messed with the joystick, it was a whole lot of funny.

Plus, it had the Beaver Song which was a hoot.

Great list Kaitlin! All of those are great episodes. I especially love Slap Bet because it gave us two running gags through out the show: The slaps and Robin Sparkles. Season 3's Sandcastles in the Sand was also a great episode. Season 6's Glitter and Season 8's P.S. I Love You also featured Robin Sparkles. The Playbook from Season 5 is one of my favorites too.

1. Girls vs. Suits - That song still makes me laugh
2. Slap Bet - Think this is going to be on everyone's list
3, The Sexless Innkeeper - controversial but simply here for Marshall's video montages (Cat Funeral etc.)
4. The Possimpible - Barney's video
5. How Your Mother Met Me - simply brilliant, la vie en rose will forever bring a tear to my eye.
6. The Time Traveler's - Ted's run to deliver the speech to the mother (meet in 45 days etc.) was quite emotional.
7. Slapsgiving - again, I think this would be on a lot of lists
8. The Leap - between the payoff with the goat and the actual leap this was a great finale.
9. The Perfect Week - a look at Barney's psyche and 'cook poo' lol
10. Glitter - maybe I'm just a big kid but the beaver song has me snickering like I'm 6 every time.

This was actually harder than I thought when I began typing. But here it is anyway.
