Huff sloughed off

Paging Dr. Huff's agent.

Cable channel Showtime has canceled Huff, the serio-comic series starring Hank Azaria as a disturbed psychologist. The series wrapped its second, and as it turns out final, season on Sunday.

From the outset, expectations for Huff were high, with Showtime green-lighting the second season even before the pilot had aired. Despite critical acclaim, the show never attained high ratings.

Huff received seven Emmy nominations for its first season. Azaria and Oliver Platt were nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively, and Blythe Danner won a Best Supporting Actress Emmy for portrayal of Huff's mother, Izzy.

Huff's fate recalls another highly thought of yet low-rated cable series, Deadwood. The HBO Western reportedly cost $5 million per episode and never got the audience the network hoped for, saddling HBO with an expensive prestige product. The series, which returned for its third season on June 11, was not given a fourth season but instead will end with two two-hour movies.

It's been about 2 years since the last episode of Huff, and I'm still waiting for the next season.... Please bring it back, if not on Showtime then to Bravo, or A&E....

  • cindy_gail

I cannot believe HUFF is not coming back. Showtime canceled its best program ever, without giving it enough time to develop a following, and NEVER gave it the promotion necessary to catch people's attention. Please, another channel, take this wonderful program over and continue it.

  • nemes1s3000

Please bring it back.. God I hope they bring it back.. FOX should sweep in and take it.

  • tashagg

I am so hurt you all canceled one of the best shows it was so good,I like dexter and Brotherhood but I think huff was the best I was so looking forward to watching it again so please bring it back

  • perrylee70

I think munoraider said it all ... it`s unbelievable ... what a fantastic show and I`ll miss it loads ... didn`t have much of an audience over here in England, but those that watched it loved it! Anyways to everyone involved in making this fine series ... thnax! ... RIP Huff!

  • MUNORAIDER

UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! IT REALLY SAYS SOMETHING ABOUT OUR SOCIETY WHEN AN INTELLIGENT, WELL WRITTEN SHOW LIKE THIS GETS CANCELED, YET WE CONTINUE TO WATCH THESE BRAIN DEAD REALITY SHOWS. WE WOULD RATHER WATCH JERRY FREAKIN SPRINGER THAN GREAT SHOWS LIKE HUFF AND DEADWOOD. WE SHOULD BE EMBARRASSED AND AFRAID OF WHAT IS AHEAD FOR US IN AMERICAN TELEVISION.

  • PerfectDark0Fan

Old news though its Showtimes fault this show isnt popular because they suck at promoting their shows.

  • vip_embryo

this is old news but f*** bad!!! i just read the whole cancelation thing.. =( thumbs down!

  • shana1221

I am absolutely devastated about Huff being cancelled. It was by far the best show on TV. :-(

  • ravenb43

I am REALLY behind the times. I just heard Huff was cancelled when Blythe Danner rec'd. her Emmy. Why is it the good shows get cancelled and the nonsensical ones remain? I'm really disappointed the turn T.V. programs are taking lately.

  • srbnok

I am shocked! The only reason I signed up for Showtime today was so I could watch Huff. I saw it a few times and really liked it. I am going to cancel my subscription tomorrow. That is so disappointing.

  • vg1973

Is Showtime kidding me? Huff is one of the best shows on TV. I am boycotting the channel for good!

  • erinth

I don't know what's more pathetic...that Showtime cancelled HUFF, or that I had to hear it from Blythe Danner during here (second!) Emmy acceptance speech. Well, after getting hooked on Dead Like Me and HUFF only to have them yanked after just two seasons, I won't set myself up for a third disappointment. I cancelled Showtime this evening.

  • maysk

This show's writing was so well done it is hard to imagine cancelling it. It was one of the reasons I kept my showtime subcription.

  • joannek

KEEP HUFF! Why would you drop such a fascinating, high quality show???

  • Hutchead

I watched the first year and really loved it.. I got my husband to watch, we like the same things.. He also got hooked & one week later we heard the Huff Family would not return!! To BAD Sharon Stone was great as was Huston!!

  • donelson

Huff started out brilliantly - likable characters, believable problems, complex behaviour, etc. But then the writers decided to F-around with it. The show descended into bitterness, anger and betrayal, and the characters we were growing to love became gargoylesque, like a cross between Friends and Buffy the Monster-monger.As the show became more grotesque, it's original audience became alienated, and new viewers could not fathom the byzantine plots, and were turned off by the spite, self-loathing and hatred.Typical "Hollywood Writers Guild" stupidity.

I was very upset when I found out that Huff was cancelled. Since this is one of the very few shows that I really have enjoyed I decided to cancel my showtime subscription.

  • hugehuffan

Just heard about the cancellation of Huff and cancelled my subscription to Showtime.

Just heard about the cancellation of Huff and cancelled my subscription to Showtime.

  • cyndymcc

    I'm crushed!

Not just because I love HUFF, but because that means WEEDS is likely next.

I discontinued my HBO subscrip and switched to Showtime in order to watch HUFF and WEEDS -- now I have to reconsider. Missing out on Sopranos, Tourgasm and Entourage has been tough but I've felt the trade off was worth it.

Can't imagine Showtime can maintain a decent business model by consistently cultivating then dumping loyal audiences.

  • _gJo_

    DAMNIT, SHOWTIME!

W H Y ?

  • jojomcdougal

If its not going to have another season, please at least give us a 2-hour finale to settle it all.

  • rellotsf

So sorry to hear that Huff has been cancelled. It was a great show. Great acting, great writing. Maybe too intelligent? I may cancel my subscription since Huff is the only show I watched on Showtime. Too bad. . . .

  • daveracer

I will have to agree with dshelston, showtime deciding to cancel this show is very much premature, I just recently got into HUFF and I enjoyed actors and the very well written and directed episodes. Quality TV does not always win the ratings game, but over some time the show can pick up an following, it is really sad I always looked forward to the next installment in the series. These guys really should have given the show a chance to bloom, but we have to remember that these are the same guys that killed off Leap Years. Showtime your days are number in my home

  • rsloane

hank azaria just does not do anything for me.

  • kinghenry5

    Huff should move to HBO.
• kinghenry5

when is season 2 of Huff coming out on DVD?
• skembear

Shows like this should never be aired against cheap crap reality shows, your average viewer would much rather see someone make a complete fool of themselves than have their intellect stretched in any way, the age of good tv is dead, reality shows wear the tv crown. bottom of the barrel z list celebs making a last ditched attempt at fame will do anything for the attention, dont give them your attention

  • terrylynnn9

Thats terrible I loved that show,I can never wait for the next episodes to come out

  • nk47

Oh my gosh, not Apu. Seriously no one could take him seriously once they found out he was a homosexual. I think reaveling to people that you enjoy the company of men can really ruin your career. Look what happend to Ellen Degeneress. I guess people view you in one way and once you show them they're wrong they do not know how to take it. Some people say "spam", some people say "stfu" and some say "what the hell are you talking about?" right before they cancel your mediocre show. Stick with the Simpsons pal, a show we can respect you on no matter who you sleep with because you are just a voice on a show causing a less akward moment.

  • RealXBoxKiller

Good riddance I say. They should've never canned Dead Like Me. That show could've easily gone on for a few more years. There's no chance of it ever coming back since Mandy Patinkin(Rube) has since moved onto Criminal Minds.
• shsteve

It never really took off for me. Tried to play the quirky comedy drama card like Dead Like Me (great 1st season, lousy 2nd) or Six Feet Under and it just ended up being too smug to hold any interest.

  • PerfectDark0Fan

I was thinking of "Dead Like Me"; that show didn't diserve to get cancled. I enjoy looking at the man now that a viroty of my favorite Simpsons characters.

  • SneedyII

Yet another "Sophmore Slump" for Sho-time. Just like 'Dead Like Me', they take a quirky dramatic comedy series and snuff it after the second season finale, just after things started looking really promising.

Forget about 'Deadwood' for the time being. This is all about Showtime, and their knee-jerk indecisive attempts to bring quality original programming to its subscribers.

This being the fourth show I really enjoyed that Showtime's offed prematurely, I actually hope Bobby Greenblatt hangs himself at this point. Give up the chair if you're done playing god, Mr. Big-Time. You get your slice any way the pie is cut, anyway.

The upcoming 'Dexter' looked so tempting too; but I can't bear to watch a show that will most likely end up getting cancelled after a couple dozen episodes. Showtime needs to get their priorities straight and realize that ratings are one thing, but viewers willing to spend money on their programming shouldn't be hoodwinked like this.

All hands out who wish to Mutiny on the deck of yon U.S.S. Showtime and make Greenblatt walk the plank into the brine.moreless

  • Carolee99

I know that it was a show that I was interested in until I found out that it was on cable. I would have watched it if I had cable.

  • PerfectDark0Fan

Im going to stop watching shows on "Showtime" becuase it seems no matter how good of a show is it just dosent seem to last.

  • darkmind-tvtome

and i'd done so well avoiding cancellations this year from the main networks.

this really is a shame, there were many stories still to come, loved the characters, and just generally this show had lots more potential

  • Water78

omg is was a good show too

    Thanks!!!

  • BeachfrontGlass

How can a show on pay tv expect big ratings? Showtime airs great shows (SG-1, Odyssey 5, The Outer Limits, etc) but they always cancel them due to bad ratings. They need to cross promote the shows and get them out where the average tv viewer can see them. Sci-Fi has done a great job with airing episodes of Battlestar Galactica on NBC, ABC showed episodes of Monk, FX has been showing It's always Sunny in Philadephia on Fox... Showtime needs to strike up a deal like that or put old episodes online like ABC has been doing so that potential new viwers can catch up.

  • dshelston

Sad to see it go - a great show in my books.

Quality TV does not always win the ratings game.

Let me surmise that this year's direction was premature, it should have been the 3rd or 4th season, the 2nd season should have continued what year 1 started, on Huff's practice and wacky clients, Sharon Stone could have been on for more episodes. This would have helped in creating more buzz and grab the audience it deserved.

This sombre view of Huff and his family's quirks, Russell descent to hell, could have waited another year, or two...

My 2 cents.
