The twosome, who play frazzled parents Pete and Sue Brockman in BBC hit show Outnumbered, can't help looking out for their children - Tyger Drew-Honey (Jake), Daniel Roche (Ben) and Ramona Marquez (Karen) - on and off screen.

"We feel immensely protective of the kids, we feel like their parents sometimes - we worry about them growing up in the public eye, but they are well looked after," said Claire.

Hugh added: "They've got everyone - their real parents, director, writer and their pretend parents - telling them what to do."

Working with children has its benefits, as the couple have found out.

"It's fantastic working with them because they ask the questions you don't dare to ask yourself. So when we do three takes, they ask, 'Why? Why do we need another take?', followed by 'Can I have a biscuit?', which is exactly what you want, but you can't because you're an adult," said Hugh.

:: The third series of Outnumbered will be shown on BBC One on Thursday, April 8.
