IFC Renews Portlandia for Two More Seasons

At this rate, we may never wake up from our carefree, earlobe-stretching, Kombucha-sipping dream of the '90s. IFC has extended its stay in Portlandia for not just one year, but two! The network has ordered a pair of 10-episode seasons to air in early 2014 and 2015.

Portlandia stars Saturday Night Live's Fred Armisen and former Sleater-Kinney member Carrie Brownstein as a whole bunch of sketch-comedy characters inspired by the absurdity of Portland, Oregon's strangest inhabitants. The two lovingly send up feminist bookstore owners, organic foodies, and punk bicyclists, all while throwing in pop-culture references and making up catchy songs. Yeah, it's pretty Portland.

Portlandia has also become a beacon for guest-stars; the show has hosted Kyle MacLachlan, Andy Samberg, Martina Navratilova, Chloe Sevigny, Roseanne Barr, Patton Oswalt, and Jeff Goldblum, among others. See, even the guest-stars are weird!

Though the niche-y series isn't the most consistent of sketch shows (are any sketch shows really that consistent?), when Portlandia works, it's pretty outstanding and a perfect fit for IFC. Also, as a Portland resident, this renewal really ups my chances of bumping into Fred Armisen at a vegan strip club.

I live in Richmond VA and people are are pretty much EXACTLY like the people in Portlandia. Everyone is a vegan hipster with a fixed gear bike.

Hmm. I live there, too, and have (thankfully) never run into any of those types, although I'm sure they're around. Get away from VCU and the inner city and you'll probably never see any more of them in Richmond. Ever. Anywhere. Overall, it's anything but a hipster town.

As an aside, WTF do those people have against gears and brakes? Being contrarily ironic is one thing but physics and mechanical efficiency are your friends! The idiocy of those vehicles is dumbfounding.

My boyfriend and I live in the Museum District so we're not technically in the fan but they are still EVERYWHERE! My parents live in the county though and that's where I went to school and didn't see any of them until I moved down here. I love the city though, I wouldn't have it any other way! I totally agree about the bikes though, and a lot of them don't wear helmets. I guess they think their messenger bags will break their falls!

The only sure way you can tell a good show is if it's always on the verge of cancellation... /sarcasm font/

I haven't seen any official word on it yet but if I had to bet, I'd say that one's a goner. IFC has a bad track record when it comes to developing animated fare with anything even resembling widespread appeal.

I think I'd be more surprised if it was renewed.

I liked it... had like a 90's vibe.

COOL!!! I'll actually be in Portland this summer and maybe they're filming then? No idea but will ask around. That'd be awesome to see it in action.
