Indian star wins British TV show after race row

Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty sought to put a racist bullying row behind her after winning Britain's Celebrity Big Brother television show, a triumph tipped to elevate her career beyond India's silver screen.

Shetty said she did not think those accused of tormenting her on the reality series meant to be racist even though their comments sparked an international uproar.

The Indian star won 63 percent of the public vote on Sunday night to storm to victory in what will be seen as a boost for racial equality in Britain and India.

She beat 13 other contestants, including shamed television personality Jade Goody and several other housemates whose treatment of Shetty generated thousands of complaints, dominated headlines, and even prompted a sponsor of the show to pull out.

But the 31-year-old was quick to play down allegations that she had been the victim of racial abuse.

"Things happen and people make mistakes and we are all human beings and we are all fallible," said Shetty after emerging victorious from the specially designed Big Brother house, where she had been cooped up for 26 days under 24-hour surveillance.

"I know one thing for sure, Jade really didn't mean to be racist," she said in an interview on Channel 4, which broadcast the controversial series.

"I really don't want to leave England putting anyone in trouble...I just want to thank the whole of Great Britain for giving me this fantastic opportunity to make my country proud."

HOT PROPERTY

Her high-profile victory means Shetty--who had been overshadowed in Bollywood in recent years by up-and-coming film stars--is once again hot property.

Newspapers said she would likely be flooded with work and had already been offered the lead role in a new BBC comedy.

In contrast, the fallout from the show may spell the end of the road for Goody as well as two other celebrity housemates--model Danielle Lloyd and singer Jo O'Meara--who have been vilified in newspapers following their comments about Shetty.

The A-list Indian star was called a "dog" on the program. A few of the housemates refused to learn her name, referred to her as "the Indian" and "Poppadom," and Lloyd said: "She should fuck off home. She can't even speak English."

Asked about her behavior, Lloyd, who emerged earlier on Sunday evening from the set, said: "I feel terrible."

She added: "I never thought we were being racist at all."

Goody has also apologized for the upset caused and is said to be considering a fence-mending trip to India.

It was amazing and shocking that the three girls accused all claimed that they were not making racist comments.
The two people who behaved the best throughout this whole farce were Jermaine Jackson and Shilpa, it is reassuring to see that at least they came first and second, although how many votes came from sympathy votes or votes to save face are unknown it taints the victory.
I just hope that the behaviour of both Shilpa and Jermaine have a true impact on all celebrities on the way a person should conduct themselves!

To call someone all those racist names and then turn around and say "I never thought we were being racist at all"?!! ... Please! They pretty much offended all the Indian community, but if you're going to apolagize then do so but don't be a hypocrite and say you're going to do a "fence-mending trip" I'm pretty sure they won't wont her there anyway

But Congratulations to Shilpa

Coming to Big Brother was the best decision she has ever made. She's shown the world the kind of person she is.

As for the 3 Racist pigs, hope they never come in the mainstream again. The kind of comments they made towards Shilpa did not only hurt her, but the entire Indian Subcontinent race.

"They don't eat, that's why they're all so thin"

**** off ****es!!

I didn't watch of this show because, let's face it, all reality shows are cheap and awful TV programming, where viewers are gullible enough to spend money on premium phone calls to vote people out of a pointless artificial situation.

Perhaps the most telling this about this racism "storm" is that Channel 4 and the production team were *loving* it because they didn't chuck anyone out of the house for espousing racist comments from what I've read - knowing that they'd get more money by keeping the racists in the house and getting huge phone votes to chuck them (and bigger viewing figures). I'm sorry, but if you watch any of these reality shows, then you're a sucker!

She is one of the most poised people I have ever met. She's like the perfect Lady. Not in a perfect I love her way but perfect as in she's pretty, polite and hold's herself well.

She deserved to win although at times she did annoy me but still :]

Congrats to Shilpa and thanks to the fair and tolerant people of Great Britain. I've been backing her (and Jermaine) from the beginning and she's won deservedly. Some people may think she's won with sympathy vote, but that's not the case. Aside from being a real celebrity and her dignified stance throughout the bullying, she's absolutely gorgeous, a great dancer, elegant, well-spoken, kind, forgiving, and has a great sense of humour. I hope she has bright career ahead of her. As for the race row, the moral of the story is: stop celebrating stupid people!

I hope Miss Goody does not come to India! We are a very welcoming nation and our good manners do not allow us to be rude to guests...but if she does come...it would be hard to be our usual nice selves! There's no need for the lady to bother! I mean WHY BE A HYPOCRITE? we all know what you really think! Atleast stick to what you believe in! And mending fences?? Yeah right! more like "Oh hell! THEY ALL KNOW WHAT I TRULY SICK INDIVIDUAL I AM!! WHAT DO I DO?? I'M GONNA GO JOBLESS!!!! better do some begging incase i wanna keep my shallow posh little existence the way it is!" Please dont come here and do us any favours! we really arent interested in any appologies! if you have any guts then stick to what u really think!
