Is Hart of Dixie Canceled? Let's Consider the Quickly Mounting Evidence (UPDATED)

This story was originally published on October 13, 2014. Scroll to the bottom to read the most recent updates.

I don’t want to start any rumors, particularly the sad kind, but things aren’t looking so good for Hart of Dixie, y’all.

Over the summer, CW President Mark Pedowitz assured reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour that fans shouldn’t worry too much about the series' late-spring move to Fridays, or the fact that Season 4 will only run for 10 episodes instead of the typical 22 (it was shortened due to Rachel Bilson's real-life pregnancy, which was then written in to the show). Oh, and don't fret over the show's current lack of a spot on the network's schedule, he said, because none of those things necessarily mean that Season 4 will be the show's last. However, the evidence is beginning to stack up.

Over the last couple of weeks, stars Wilson Bethel and Scott Porter have both posted less-than-subtle tweets suggesting that Hart of Dixie’s upcoming fourth season will be its last. First there were these two, from Porter:

And then Bethel—who has long been the best thing about the CW dramedy—tweeted, “Thank you, Wade Kinsella for these four wonderful years. It's been a mighty pleasure knowing you.”

Um, that sounds pretty ominous, no?

Now, to add fuel to the conspiracy fire, Deadline is reporting that Bethel has landed a series regular role on ABC’s midseason drama The Astronaut Wives Club. He'll play Scott Carpenter, the easygoing husband of Yvonne Strahovski’s Rene. The casting doesn't automatically spell doom for Hart of Dixie—since Astronaut Wives Club is a limited series and Hart of Dixie has already completed filming on Season 4, the two shooting schedules won’t overlap. But given that the actor also recently closed a deal with Warner Bros. TV to write a drama project for The CW (he previously wrote and starred in both Stupid Hype and L.A. Rangers, which both aired on CW Seed), it might not be a bad idea to start preparing for the worst, Bluebell fans.

The bright side to all of this, of course, is that Hart of Dixie's third season ended with Bilson's Zoe realizing she's butt-crazy in love with Bethel's southern bad boy Wade, and 10 episodes should theoretically allow Season 4 to successfully wrap everything up.

Regardless, if Hart of Dixie does get the axe, the support group meets at my place Mondays... or maybe Fridays... at 8pm. It's BYOBWW (bring your own boxed white wine).

UPDATE (10/17): A CW rep has informed us that "no decision has been made regarding the future of Hart of Dixie, so any discussion or reporting of whether or not the show will continue beyond the upcoming season is premature."

UPDATE (10/24): Stars Scott Porter and Wilson Bethel chatted with Yahoo TV about the possibility of the show returning for Season 5, and they were a little bit cagey about it. The outlook is still grim, but Porter is definitely urging fans to watch with the hopes that it'll help the show's chances. "I would love to come back and be a part of Bluebell again—and there's a chance—but we really need the support of the fans to be able to come back," Porter told the website. "If people don't watch, then shows don't come back, so we just need a little help."

No!!!! I just started watching the show this year. I didn't even know it existed. I now have watched every episode and now they are ending? They can't do that! This is the greatest southern show since Andy Griffith, but way better in the romance department. It is a good, clean, all american home town show and if it is cancelled then that is a real sad shame. I think they should give it at least one more season. Please?????? I promise to personally watch every show and share updates on my facebook page with all of my big town and small town friends!

This show was one of my guilty pleasures, but I can understand why it might be about to be cancelled. The first 2 seasons were great but season 3 was rubbish! If they had wrapped up the Joel/Vivan storylines by half way through the season then it might have had better ratings. At least it has a last season to wrap everything up in case of cancellation...hears hoping they bring back the magic of the first 2 seasons!

For starters none of the actors can do a southern accent correctly! Then there's the lead female character Zoe who any guy would run from after spending any time with her. The show was bad from the start and should have not made it past season one.

I really hate when actors say things like "If people don't watch, then shows don't come back." They're in the 'business' so they should know how things like ratings work better than 90% of the public and should know trying to guilt your fans into watching the show doesn't mean it won't be cancelled. 80% of the US could watch it but if only 10% of them are part of the Nielsen system, only those 10% matter to the networks.

he is correct in saying that and too many people watch on line or record it that hurts the rating too.

not really because if they don't have a Nielsen box, it will NOT be counted if they watch it live on tv. atleast with DVR and online, it's getting counted somehow even if it doesn't factor into the big thing they all care about. normal people watching shows just don't matter in the eyes of networks, only the TVs watching shows that are part of the Nielsen ratings system. they couldn't care less about the rest.

Well. I won't say I'm not disappointed (how can you hate this show? It's IMPOSSIBLE!) but at least it made it 4 seasons.
That's 3 more seasons than Firefly
2 more than Joan of Arcadia (although I did think JoA S1 was better)
2 more than SMASH

I could go on...
Hart of Dixie is a great show (although I hate Joel so much! Zoe should be with Wade, at all times. :) and no matter the outcome of the CW's final decision, I'm glad it's made it this far. It was kinda touch-and-go for awhile there, and it made me so nervous!

I will tell you when the show is really canceled: when no more stars show up on Whose Line Is It Anyway? They've already had Wilson Bethel and Mircea Monroe. I'd like to see Rachel Bilson, after she gives birth, of course.

They're probably not calling it cancelled yet because they want to market the show to other outlets. But that doesn't mean it will get picked up elsewhere.

This hurts my Hart of Dixie :(

Such a silly show, but I did find it enjoyable popcorn watching. Frankly, I'm amazed it made it to season 2 never mind season 3. So maybe I should just be happy with that.

I guess it's because of Bilson's pregnancy though. Now she's a mother, she wants to spend all her time with the baby.

Awww... I will miss Hart of Dixie but with its terrible ratings, the unceremonious exile to Friday night's death slot and a renewal for a shortened season, it is hardly a surprise...

It is a little odd that the CW renewed the show for a 4th season which could take the episode count to the magical number of ca. 88 (& syndication revenue) if it had been a full 22-ep season but then given that the 4th season only has 10 eps it stays at 76... Oh well... I guess a complement of 10/12 eps in a 5th season is what we can now dream of...

The original renewal, I believe, was for a full 22-episode season, but then it had to be shortened after the fact due to Rachel's pregnancy.

it wasn't moved to Fri to die,it was moved to Fri to await syndication and cause a new show needed the better timeslot. The reason it got a short season is cause star/lead RB is pregnant.Nikita also received a very short fourth season but was still syndicated.

Oh well - It sounds bad when you put it all together. I'm also a fan of this light silly show myself. In any case, it feels for a while that most options have been explored by the show already, so maybe a proper end would be suitable at this point. Maybe a spin off of some kind?

Oh Crap that does sound like season 4 will be the last! Love the show it's part of my guilty pleasure. I don't think there is a single cast member i don't like on that show. It might be a smart thing to do and end it with a 10 episode 4th season and we could all have a proper closure on the show.

If is has been cancelled, it's a real pitty. This is one of few shows you can actually relax when watching. Another interpretation of the above news might be that Scott Porter leaves the show.

Putting an end to HoD after a 10 episode season might be a smart thing!
I loved the first two seasons but wasn't particularly fond of the last one, which seemed to drag the plot everywhere.
As long as it ends on a Zade union, I'm ok ;)

Yeah, figured that was the case. At least we are getting a healthy 10-ep. sendoff as opposed to the restrictive 6-ep. final season other shows have received. It's been pretty silly and hokey at times, but the cast and chemistry were great, making it a guilty pleasure of mine. Hope they all move on to good projects.

Well with just the 10 episode order and now this, I think I'll have to say goodbye to Bluebell :(. Who would think that out of a series based on a book of the same author as TVD, Sarah Michelle Gellar playing twins and Rachel Bilson playing a doctor, the latter will run for 4 seasons.

Even if it does get cancelled, I'm glad it gets ten episodes to wrap it all up. Got to love the CW. They gave endings to carrie diaries, life unexpected & 90210 (although not the greatest) just to name a few shows that might've not deserved to come back for their final seasons. If only other networks would do the same. And that is why I watch 95% of whatever they put out.

I figured with the 10 ep season it would be the last, but then again I'm a fan of series such as Warehouse 13, Eureka, Community and the like so I always figure my shows are being cancelled at the end of whichever season is airing.

I just finished re-watching season 3 on Netflix and I love that stupid show.

If only this were the sign that the CW was going to actually to court better writers and series in the future I might rejoice! However, let's be honest with ourselves and the Universe-- Bell Belle might fade into the black-- but the CW will only replace it with a more sensational and trite teenaged drama!!! Hooray for Corporations!

Not surprising. When a show like this - which deserves to be cancelled in the light of its ratings - gets only a 10-episode season, it means the season is its coda.

When I read the word "cancelled" in your headline, I thought for a second that the CW had decided in a surprise move not to air the fourth season at all. Now that would have been shocking! But cancelling it after this shortened fourth season makes sense.

Oh, the headline scared me. I thought they weren't going to air the last 10 eps. But canceled after those is total expected. For me, they ruined the show when they had Wade cheat: they made it so there was no way back, all to try to make Zoe look better and it was really impossible to side with her at that point. Jamie King's pregnancy didn't help. Now, I'm just super happy Bethel is getting new roles. All I need is for Kaitlyn Black to find a new show and I'll be content watching season 1 and remembering a crazy little southern Stars Hollow.

I know I saw the Astronaut Wive's Club thing earlier today, but didn't worry too much about it (since he is one of the astronauts, I figure that is like being cast as one of the army officers on Army Wives, they aren't really the important cast members). Then I saw this and the tweets. That is sad, but I guess not super surprising. I have a feeling Jane the Virgin takes over the feel good show need element on the CW this year and its success or failure is the real deciding factor on Hart of Dixie. And also, I sort of feel like it was reaching a little last season. It wasn't super comfortable in being just like a Northern Exposure, or, I don't know, almost a Gilmore Girls sort of show where there is more focus on Stars Hollow.

Jane the Virgin and Hart of Dixie would have made a good Monday night pairing, I think. The show's biggest problem has been Zoe's unwillingness to grow up. While most of the characters evolved (albeit maybe very slowly), Zoe continued to do the same stupid shit she always did and then was surprised at the outcome each time. I think that's part of what dragged Season 3 down a bit. They wouldn't let her grow until the last few episodes of the season, and I think that hurt. I'll still be bummed to see it go, though, whenever that may be.
