Is Heroes Desperate? Claire's Same-Sex Experimentation Confirmed

One of the first things revealed about the upcoming season of Heroes wasn't some arch-enemy committed to taking down Peter, a new hero with a cool superpower, or even the show's theme for the next volume. No, it was that Claire Bennett (played by Hayden Panettiere) would maybe-possibly-could-be getting it on with another girl.

Claire is set to go to college in "Redemption," the title of the next volume which sees the Heroes returning to "normal" lives, and will be rooming with a pair of females -- Madeline Zima (Californication) and Rachel Melvin (Days of Our Lives). And because Girls Gone Wild and soft porn say it is so, the female roommates will be doing a little experimenting with each other.

"Days of Our Lives co-star Rachel Melvin has been tapped to guest star and potentially recur on Heroes next season, playing Annie, who also will share sleeping quarters (and maybe more) with Claire," read the announcement in a Hollywood Reporter article in early June.

EW's Michael Ausiello has confirmed that Claire will be getting more-than-friendly with Melvin's character, which will in turn make Heroes geeks flip their lid and tune in. It's unclear whether it will be a real relationship or just some Spin-the-Bottle-type activity, but signs are pointing towards somewhere in the middle.

The question is... why? While no one will deny that college is the place young 'uns dabble in certain taboos, writing in a lesbian storyline for a show's hottest young starlet just seems... cheap. Couldn't they have just let her take a bong rip or one too many Jell-O shots?

We're trying to reserve judgment until we see how it actually plays out, but it's hard not to look at the obvious. Heroes has seen its once-mighty viewership crumble and is in make-it-or-break-it mode -- something HAD to be done. But this? Come on Tim Kring, you can do better than that.

dear mr. kring simply put you suck.i just watched the last volume and i couldnt be more disguisted in your work. heroes was my favorite show and it had potential. you however never did. i wish i could slice open you skull to see what you were thinking by making the choices you made in the serie. and i hate the fact i cant take over this show or have it rebooted so that i could give the fans what they wanted and for that matter deserved....real heroes.

I support GLBT and all, but this is kind of sad. I mean, I'm a Heroes fan, and I will continue to watch until it's to the point of unbearable... but honestly, Kring needs a plotline for Claire and what, this is the only thing left? In season 2, they threw in like, 10 new characters to keep it interesting, but it was frankly annoying. In season 3, they found it a good idea to kill everyone off. And this season, stunts for ratings. Original cast makes the show great. Sylar, Nathan, Peter and Hiro are the reason I'm watching. Especially the Matt/Sylar battle, it's wonderful. But this is CLEARLY over the edge. Claire doesn't seem like a bi/lesbian character.. the feelings weren't necessarily reciprocated, though. I'm going to watch and see what happens... By the way, the new Ray-character-people don't make it interesting, just confusing.

Heroes is dying out. Kristen Bell was wonderful and they killed her off.

"SPOILERS AHEAD, IF YOU HAVENT WATCHED SEASON PREMIERE YET, STOP!!!" Please tv.com don't give any false information, I already watched season's 4 premiere, TWICE, and there is no such thing as an "exploring sexuality thing" And is not possible for them to do it later because, SURPRISE! MELVIN'S CHARACTER IS DEAD, so please you are the ones who control all the information about America's favorite tv shows, so please don't give false information, it really pisses me off...

oh brother... Just when I was going to give them a second chance after Fuller came back, he was gone again in a blink... I was still tempted to give them the second chance and now that? I'm outta here... Honestly... I don't mind gay characters, in fact I embrace them when they are genuine and not publicity-motivated or rating whoring... ok, I guess that leaves us with Marc onUgly Betty. But really? Claire? If they had introduceda gay character, male or female, I'd have said 'so be it' 'good for them' but turning Claire into a LUG (Lesbian Until Graduation)... sounds like death toll to me... so long Heroes, don't let the shark eat you when you do this last jump...

for this show now...any news is good news...even if the whole set closes down for some rumor generation.

they need the publicity...this show has gone into the winds and they are worried that nobody will tune in for season 4

Umm, geez, don't you even look at the show? "Bong rip...Jell-o shots" she can't get drunk, remember? At least I hope the writers do. Consistency has not been the theme for this show. I really don't care if Claire lip locks with another co-ed. What really bothers me is this is what's coming out? Not some hint of how they're going to fix this fracked up storyline but a cheap ratings trick. Sorry, this does not bode well for the once great show.

it may well be an attempt to get the ratings up, however, in the first season, the gay dude(or whatever they ultimately decided he would be!) asked Claire if she was planning on coming out to her foster parents. i think the episode was "Better Halves", but it's been a while, so i can't remember; i just know that it happened.

Its natural for people to wonder or be confused about sexuality. Why hide it from TV viewers? I hate when people assume that every action that is made in movies and television is just for ratings. And what would be the point of Claire taking a bong hit or "one too many shots"? She can't get drunk or high.

Her character was good in season 1 and ever since has been the least entertaining character to watch. Making her kiss a girl might make her a bit more entertaining but they are going to have to do a lot more to make people care about Claire again.

I loved the first season, could just about watch season two, but gave up in season three. Never saw the ending of it, and couldn't be bothered. And off course this isn't going to work. We don't have to watch a whole boring episode, let alone a full season of boring episodes, to see a few seconds of girls kissing each other....We'll just get the make-out clips on the internet. I'm probably not even going to bother with that.

As seen in the episode in Mexico where Claire beat the guys and Nathan in the tequilla drink off, alcohol and (I assume) drugs have no effect on a girl who heals super quick. Claire has a bit of a rebellious streak and when drink and drugs are off the table, maybe exploring sexuality is the next best (legal) thing. It might seem a bit crazy that all of a sudden she'll go for a girl, but I'm gay and I've met plenty of girls who have become very confused and wanted to experiment as soon as they realise I'm a lesbian!! It is all a little bit out of the blue and yes it probably is a ratings thing but maybe it's just another bit of character development that will take Claire some place new and unexpected.

The publicity stunt with Claire hooking up with another girl just looks like the ultimate act of desperation to me. Just another love interest for them to kill off. And totally unbelievable. People don't switch their sexual orientations just like a light switch turning on and off. She hasn't shown any interest in girls through the entire series. It just doesn't make sense. The writers are sacrificing their credibility for a little boost in one week's ratings. But they've been doing that for a long time now. I didn't like the story this season at all. It looked like the whole theme was that both heroes and villains are miserable and if they ever fall in love, their mates are dead meat. If they were trying to make that point, we got it already.
Instead of continuing Matt's budding romance with the cute speedster, they killed her off to bring back the stale relationship with the ex-wife, and added the stupid baby trick for comic relief. They killed off Siler's girlfriend Elle, just when she was showing some potential as a morally questionable "gun moll", worthy of the role handed down from the great Cagney mobster flicks of the '30s. And Claire's boyfriends don't seem to have much longevity. For that matter, Nathan's girl, Ali Larter, has gotten herself killed not once, but twice. Then they killed off Mrs. Patrelli's husband, just when he was shaping up to be a great arch-nemesis. The fact is, Heroes began as a great idea. It was a fresh look at the whole concept of superheroes, as they would exist in society. It has descended into a collection of the worst cliches that a hack writer can come up with. Kill off a character for ratings. Do something shocking for ratings. Kill off another character for ratings. Introduce some comic relief. Shock. Kill. Stale joke. Shock. Kill. Stale joke. Rinse and repeat. I want Heroes to return to its roots and give us another great story like it did in the first season. No more publicity stunts. No more "death of the week", "shock of the week", "joke of the week" crap. Let's see a real story this season. We loved the first season, which was about a group of everyday people becoming HEROES and battling overwhelming odds to save the world. If Heroes just returns to its roots, people will watch it. If it just keeps pushing out new characters every week and killing them off just when we begin to get acquainted with them, this will probably be the final season.

I don't actually think Kring CAN do better then this. It's the best idea they've had in a while....still, it s*cks. Of course it's a ratings thing. And the sad part is it actually works...

endgame, how dare you not try to insult me; i'm rather insulted by that. i think i'm supposed to type 'LOL' but screw that emoticon bastard child. anyway, kudos for the 40 point word score with mercurial, although i've never played that game. is it scrabble? so in regards to peter, even with his powers being taken and then given back in a very limited form, he was still true to form. but, yeah, that sucked major egg. he was pretty much the most powerful hero, and they took that away from him; though, peter's apathy to all that power was somewhat infuriating. he's basically a god and it's never like, "holy crap, i'm pretty much a god." losing that power to a hug seemed too emasculating. but, i suppose he's gained sylar's ability to figure things out (and murderous instinct), and since sylar can absorb people's powers without killing them as he did with elle, through (choking back a thousand furious laughs) compassion, peter is back on top, until sylar reawakens and then they'll have a compassion off. the buddha will then appear and compassion them all to hell.

"I think they can do better then that. Claire is into guys, not girls. Ever since season one, that's been known. There has never once been any such evidence that she was into girls."

1. So what? Ellen Degener--however you spell her last name--revealed that she's with a transgendered person whose become a woman, despite having been with guys like George Lopez, thereby causing people to question the "nature or nurture" aspect of orientations.

2. Even so, this idea is a disgrace to not only the show, but to those who truly are either gay bisexual, lesbian, transgendered, or those who are heterosexual friends to those sorts of people, because it just furthers cements how society lambasts those of a different orientation simply because of their preference. And that, my friends, is the true BS behind this whole debacle.

Yes, they're desperate. That show was good the first couple seasons but now sucks. If season 3 didn't show you they ran out of ideas. This desperate plot will. Its time to cancel that show.

Well, dumbsaint...that isn't an insult I swear, I don't know. I really like Sylar, especially his earlier version. I do agree the past two seasons he's been a bit too mercurial for my liking. Same goes for Peter, one season he's extremely powerful and then they take it all away. That was lame, now he doesn't even have access to the powers if he does get if empathic mimicry back. The show has gone downhill. This whole bit is a ratings stunt, but I probably won't be watching. I hate dumb turns and usually avoid them.

Considering her role in Californication, I would have thought that Madeline would have been the one for the role rather than Rachel. Meh, either way, the show has been going downhill since season two, so it is no surprise that they pull this kind of desperate stunt. And yes, it is a stunt since it is difficult to picture Claire in college at all. She can barely stay in the same house for more than a few days without getting into trouble and chased down by bad guys. How in the world is she supposed to actually go to classes? Yeah, right.

endgame65, you brought out an opinion (oh, snap) of mine concerning sylar. i don't like him much, not because he's a villain, as villain's are at times my favourite characters (Scorpius from Farscape (miss you)), but this only occurs if the character is true to their own sense of being. sylar, in my awesome opinion is not. he shifts much too frequently and with no forethought for where he's been and how he got to who he is then. excellent example: him killing Elle. out of the blue, his killer compulsion arises and off goes her head. yes, this is sylar, and his good to bad ratio is low, but his personal arc fluctuates too much. now, on peter i agree with you. his status as a character remains plausible and grounded. he is always peter. sylar is... well, i guess he's nathan now. too funny.

Oi. Why does every show have to go in this direction? Please, it's getting boring and lame. Cheap is right, this is BS all the way. I'm only into the show for Peter and Sylar. They've always been the best characters, I might still watch, but if they keep this up I'll be channel flipping a lot.
