It's Official: How I Met Your Mother Is Renewed for a Ninth and Final Season

Those two kids who've been sitting around waiting for Ted to get to the point of his damn story received some great news today: The tale of how their dad met their mother will finally be told. CBS has ordered a ninth and final season of How I Met Your Mother, and yes, the network promises to reveal the identity of the mother before the series goes off the air for good.

The entire cast will be back for the send-off, as will creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas.

The big question is when viewers will meet the mother. We know Ted meets her at Robin and Barney's wedding, which will take place at the end of the current season, but that doesn't necessarily mean we'll know her identity at the end of this season or the beginning of the next. She could be a bridesmaid, the caterer, the flower girl, the valet parker, or even a groomsman (it's the 2010s, people, get with the times!). Or, if you insist, the bass player in the wedding band. Or maybe Season 9 will be Ted having flings with half the women from the wedding and the identity of the mother will play out like some PBS mystery show. Maybe the mother is actually a test tube. I don't know.

Let's all just be happy that the nation's biggest question will be answered and Ted's kids can finally get on with their lives.

I truly believe that the last scene of the series will be when Ted (and us) meet the mom.

The show is called "How I Met Your Mother." It implies that the goal, the end point, of this story is when Ted meets her. It's not "How I Met Your Mother, Dated Her, And Eventually married Her." So, no, I don't think we'll see Ted date her (heck I don't think the mom will say more than 5 sentences) before the show ends.

if they continue on a 9th season i know how the series will end. his story will be interrupted by a knock at the door. it's the child protective people that are coming for the kids for the child abuse of making them sit forever listening to this ridiculously long story.

This show was entertaining in the first few seasons, but it became dull so I stopped watching it. You can’t set goal (meeting the mother) and then prolong the race for years and keep people interested.

if american writers want to see how to do a show with a goal properly they should turn to the uk. the original the office show only lasted 2 years/seasons because it was supposed to be a documentary and what kind of documentary lasts for almost a decade. but then if the american the office only lasted a few years or less then they wouldn't make as much money which goes to the real reason shows last so long here.

Agreed. There's no worse writing than that which keeps writing away from the ending rather than towards it. I finally dropped it, and I don't miss it.
And it's only the last season as long as they agree it is. God forbid ratings jump 1% early next season and the rumblings of a tenth season begin.

This was one of those shows(along with Big Bang Theory) I've tried to like countless times. I'd always get through a couple episodes and just lose interest completely. I really like a lot of the actors too.

It was so good in the beginning, such a shame, but I hope there will be a nice and friendly mother to come like Miley Cyrus^^ no, just kidding

This could be exactly what the fans and series needs to wrap it up in a great way, or it could be what totally ruins this series and fills the viewers with hate. I really hope they do it properly, and that HIMYM can be remembered with fondness long after they all sail off into the sunset together.

I'm glad they are getting another season. I would have been disappointed if the final had him meet the mother and that be it. I hope we meet the mother at the end of this season and next season we get to know her.

I'm going to be sad to see the show go. I could watch this show forever is they allowed it. to me it wasn't about meeting the mother, but the journey it to to get there. Even if we did meet her, I'd still want to see their lives unfold and the stories that came with it. I always read comments that are so negative with the show about them prolonging it, that its over, not funny or that they just don't care anymore. They're fooling themselves, of course they do, if you're anything like me you watch the show because you enjoy it. If you've stopped enjoying it, I honestly don't need to know because there are many people out there like that still do enjoy it and are thankful to get another season.

At this point, I was ready for the show to wrap things up this season. Honestly, I don't even care that much anymore about who the mother is. I'm really glad, though, that Barney and Robin are finally together. But I honestly don't understand this decision to drag things for another season.

Let me explain it for you. The production company gets paid if they produce shows, and it does not get paid if they do not produce shows. Does that help clear it up?

So, I was really hoping they would end it this season, but ok. I'll hold on for one more. I couldn't possibly care less who the mother is, but I still laugh most episodes, so I'll push through. That's IT though! No moreeee!

And it's already been confirmed she's the bass player of the wedding band. So, if the wedding is the end of this season, we won't see the reception until next season.

can you imagine those poor kids sitting on the couch for 9 years listening to their father babble on. Want to know their secret though as they haven't aged a day. Not that I've noticed anyway.
Glad it is finishing though used to regularly watch it but then we kept getting repeats or a time change and I just lost interest. When I do get a chance to watch a new one I enjoy it but Ted just annoys me. Has he gotten more whinny? or is it just me.

I wonder, after 8 seasons, how many girls has he told his kids he slept with? I think I'd be grossed out and done after the first.

Off the top of my head, Stella, Zoey, Victoria, the krav maga girl, the pineapple girl, the slutty pumpkin...I know there are many others. Oh, and let's not forget "Aunt Robin". Seriously, dad, I'm thrilled to know you bagged Aunt Robin.

I Still think we’ll be meeting the mother either in the 8th season finale or the 9th season premiere, the creators confirmed that the Barnacle's Wedding is this year, so I wouldn’t be shocked if the 8th season finale ends with us just about seeing the mothers face and the 9th season premiere beginning with meeting the mother and her being at least a recurring character throughout the final season. I’m having mixed emotions, I still love this show, even if the recent seasons have been frankly mediocre, but I am a bit sad to see it go. I hope it’s final season is strong.

I almost interpreted that as Krysten Ritter was the mom and cancelled Don't Trust The B* in Apt 23 had melded into HIMYM. Ted had actually dated Chloe's roommate before June came along and bass playing was a hidden talent of Chloe's - you never know. Season 9 could be the taming of the Chloe from her crazy life as Barney thinks she's a catch for Ted esp. since she's similiar to Barney. OK, I'll keep on dreaming and blame it on Apt.23 withdrawal.

Next up after Season 9 of HIMYM...Ted telling the story about his kids growing up to his grandkids in the premiere of How I Raised My Kids (aka Father Almost Knows Best).

The thing about How I Met Your Mother is it's very sneaky. First of all whoever the Mother is has already been cast. They filmed the final scene with her, the kids, and future ted during season 2 because the wanted the kids to still be kids and not 8 years older. I'm guessing that she has been seen, but that we just never noticed her, like I would bet she's been in the background playing a guitar or something and we never noticed...

Remember when Barney and Ted were in the bar in season three on the "No Tomorrow" episode? He said she was in the bar that night. At one point, he bumped into a girl, and they kind of had a "moment", and then she was never seen again.

She matches the body type of the girl who ended up being his match from the matchmaker site. They show various pictures of her, minus the face. Why would they do that if it wasn't going to end up being the mom?

I'd be interested to watch the "Definitions" episode, where Ted had his teaching debut. He also said she was in the class that he went to originally, that ended up not being his actual class. I wonder if you scan the class, if you can see her sitting there.

I might have to watch on Netflix tonight when I get home.

If you don't think about it, what you just said makes some sense. But then we remember it's a 21st century and technology is what it is. Photoshop some pictures, some special effects for some hugs and kisses and there you have it.
Yeah, those scenes have been filmed with the kids younger and some extra which they will just replace when they'll cast her.

I hope that we're introduced to her at the end of this season and that the last season is about them dating and seeing Josh Radnor's character Ted finally getting married. We need to see him spend as much time dating her as he did Stella or Victoria. I think the show would come full circle if it ends with Ted's wedding to "the mom"

ARGH!!!!
And next season we will get the news that HIMYM has been renewed for a Tenth and Final Season as the network milks every last drop it can from the show. I mean wasn't this eighth season billed as the final one?
I really feel for the cast who have been fairly open about wanting to move on to other things but instead are stuck in a career rut, for example how does this play into the whole Smulders working of Whedons SHEILD project, has she now lost that chance?
2
Reply
Flag
Smulders stated that her commitments to HIMYM would not interfere with her being on the SHEILD series if she was offered. Maybe she would appear only as a recurring character at first and if it went for another season, jump into a regular role.

CBS has usually been more willing to allow its actors to appear in movies and show on other networks so long as it does not interfere with their responsibilities on their shows. This is a stark contrast to NBC which has been more strict about its non compete clauses like when they refused to allow Sarah Lancaster and Masi Oka to make cameos on Scrubs when it was on ABC because they were on Chuck and Heroes at the time.

The mother (as others have said) plays the bass in the band that plays at their wedding. It's really just a matter of what she looks like, and how the chemistry is between her and Josh Radnor, and of course with the other characters.

NPH is definitely the father. Maury confirmed it.

Silliness aside, I think it's time. HIMYM has had a great run, but it is losing that extra oomph that made it so great when it started. These last few episodes of season 8 have been wonderful, really put the show back on its stride, but it's time. Go meet your lady friend, Ted.

Boy, I had a hard time deciding between the right answer, and 'your mom'.

On the other hand, now this show can continue to piss away the 8th season the way it did at the outset, before things finally started getting to a point. I suspect now that they're officially renewed, they can stop getting to a point again - this show is lame like that. It'd be nice to see Ted actually start to develop a relationship with this person, not just leave it till the series finale to finally reveal her and be disappointing and then they just rush through the rest as a f montage.

Exactly my thoughts. I was glad that it was coming to an end and enjoyed seeing the writers wrapping everything up for the finale. It felt like real jokes were coming once again and not just the stale stuff of the last couple of seasons. Back to stale stuff. Oh well.

How I met Your Mother is just the name of a show that came on the scene some 8 years ago and it's never been about that, so who really cares? It's just a cute show with some fun people and a light premise that isn't always addressed. This show is often hit or miss but when it's good it's pretty good. Quite often it gets stupid and blah. I'm glad for another season but don't really care who the mother is...

I agree with everything except the not caring who the mother is...its been 8 years I do give some kind of crap as to who she is...the writers better come up with a character that has some pretty solid chemistry with Ted.

Cause Marshal and Lilly are perfect together. Barney and Robin work really well. So if they s#!t the bed with Ted and (whoever she is) I'll be a little cheesed...

it'll be "Lost" all over again

Your vote should be what actress should they hire to play the mother? Anyone reading this, write who you think should play the mother.

Sarah Michelle Gellar. Everyone but Ted can meet her in episodes before the finale, and when Lily meeets her, she doesn't like her at all, so would never think to introduce her toTed. Eventually she finds herself liking her and she is the one who introduces Ted to her at the wedding.

I really can't imagine SMG and Ted having chemistry. He needs someone a little nerdy, 'cause he's super nerdy. . . That's why I said Amy Acker, 'cause she's good at nerdy AND good at chemistry with everyone. Hmmm. Maybe they should have had the mother be an architect too, since no one else in his life ever gets it. . . What about Felicia Day? Has she been on the show? She looks like she could be a musician/nerd, and she does funny well. . .

Oooh, I have a great idea! Amy Acker! Seriously, she'd be perfect!

but he already met her so can't be her

Haha, really? She's been on the show? Didn't recall that, but it doesn't surprise me since that place is a non-stop Buffy/Angel reunion.
Reply

that's why I suggested SMG. Acker was the girl who taught Ted how to make it rain by doing a raindance, and she makes sense because he is already too nerdy, he needs someone who will keep him from becoming a misanthropic model-building weirdo.

"Your mom" obviously.

Eh, monday tv sucks anyway, so bring on another season. And yes they already revealed in the show that the mother is the bass player in the wedding band, kind of ruins your voting for who's the mother.
Reply

We actually already know who she is, so my guess is the 9th season will be all about how she gets from the-bass-player-from-their-wedding to your-mother, so... possibly kinda boring.
Reply

The mother is the bass player. They also have to do it at the end of the current season, and use the last season to show them have a relationship.

Of course, they won't do that. But they have to.

This is bs! Reveal the frickin' mother already!! And then do the last season about stories with her leading up to the wedding, at least show her face, but nooo. It's gonna be mediocre episodes at best until 5 min from the end they say and this is how I met you mother. This suck I've been missing the show lately because of this and it only got worse.
