The entertainment output on ITV1 isn’t exactly storming the ratings right now, generally the channel’s drama series are far more successful (at least when X Factor etc aren't on). Keen for you to remember this, ITV have released a statement, claiming that “8 of the 10 most watched new dramas of 2011” were theirs. It’s unclear where they got this information (or even if it’s true), nonetheless it’s led the channel to renew four of its recent shows: Vera, Scott & Bailey, Monroe and Case Sensitive.
New Vera episodes have already gone in to production, with Brenda Blethyn again at the helm. Among the Ann Cleeve novels adapted in this four-part series will be The Ghost Position, Sandancers and Silent Voices. The two new episodes of Case Sensitive, meanwhile, will be an adaptation of Sarah Hannah’s The Other Half. And, of course, Olivia Williams and Darren Boyd will be back for those too.
Also returning to ITV1 are Suranne Jones and Lesley Sharp. They’ll be reprising their leads as duo Scott & Bailey in the eight-part second season, due to air next year. Not wanting to be outdone, Amelia Bullmore, who plays Gill Murray, “hopes” to write one of the crime drama’s new episodes.
The channel won’t be totally saturated by detectives however, medial drama Monroe will also return next year. James Nesbitt’s neurosurgeon will be joined by two new (as yet, uncast) characters who ITV claims “will challenge Monroe's world in significant ways.” Interesting...
Are you glad these shows have been renewed? Which new series are you most looking forward to?
