J.D. revived in Scrubs renewal

Scrubs given new lease of life

It seems the cancellation storm cloud that's been following our favourite shows may finally be lifting, as this weekend, ABC reportedly followed in Fox's Dollhouse and Chuck saving footsteps by giving Scrubs, Castle and Better off Ted another lease of life.

The future of these shows has hung in the balance for a while, with reports suggesting that all three were heading for the chop. EW! has reported, however, that Castle and Better off Ted will now be returning for a second series while Scrubs will be back with a ninth.

Scrubs actor Zach Braff, who plays Doctor John 'J.D.' Dorian, will return for six episodes of the medical comedy's new season despite announcing his plans to quit last summer.

It was widely predicted that without Braff Scrubs would cease to continue and even the show's creator, Bill Lawrence, who left the show at the end of series eight, admitted that the comedy's ninth season would only be made if it made financial sense for ABC.

New comedies also picked up by ABC this weekend include Courtney Cox's Cougar Town, Kelsey Grammer's Hank and Patricia Heaton's The Middle. Drama pilots given the green light are detective series Happy Town, Scott Wolf's sci-fi V and Lindsay Price's witch drama Eastwick.

As Much As I am a big fan of the show.. I don't think episode "My Finale" should have been that with so many of the main cast leaving I am wondering if the show will survive a 9th season.. but we have been surprised before look at ER.. after the first set of interns graduated to atendings we did not think that show would be revived again.. so I could be made wrong.. but you could see in the 8th season that they were getting ready to see if the new interns could make a go at it.. I like "Joe" and the new Black intern is very streight to the point.. so I might be surprised.

i do not agree with tenne... Bill lawrence left the show, zach braff left the show... The finalle was absolutely perfect, bringing closure to the entire series with hopes and dreams of the future for the characters. It is pointless to continue such a masterpiece simply for the money... Shame on ABC...

I'm a big fan of the show and I've just wached the finale and I agree with you people here that it was just perfect. But your comments about next season got me thinking that maybe the show, with a partially new cast, wouldn't be such a bad idea. I think there is still much comedy left on a hospital set and you wouldn't have to worry about all the same drama that's been going on back and fuorth between the charecters over and over again. I mean you'd have a clean slate and a perfect set to work on. It could be a great show if you just thought of it as a compleately new show. Keep in mind there are, in my opinion, no good comedys left out there.-...I'll get me coat.moreless

We love, "The Unit" and really hope that someone picks it up. It would be awesome on HBO or Showtime.

I don't like ABC scrubs so far. I only liked two episodes last season. Anyways glad to hear Castle is coming back I really liked that show and thought it would get the axe.

they still want to continue? omg the final episode was realy memorable but it should have been the final season. i'd be watching it but i wont be looking forward to it :(

Look, I really love the show and season 8 was great and all, but this show has just about run its course and probably should have ended. I'll be amazed if it lasts beyond those six episodes with J.D. Without him, it just won't be the same.

I'm torn....I want to watch it but I don't want to be disappointed.

i agree, how do you do that to a great series just because the ratings went up in the final season? continuing with the barely established intern characters and not the original cast would just ruin the series. the only shows that successfully got away with that were ER, CSI, and Law & Order.

Im disappointed. Scrubs had such a great finish a few weeks ago. They shouldn't want to erase the emotion of that finale. I never thought I would say this but, I won't be watching the new season.

I don't see how Scrubs can come back, after the amazing season finale (it seemed like the SERIES finale).

When oh when are networks going to realize boobs make for successful tv shows? Make the female cast in DollHouse topless and watch the ratings go through the roof (no pun intended)

    Lindsay Price's witch drama Eastwick.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't The Witches of Eastwick a movie that starred Cher as a witch? Who are they going to get to replace her?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094332/

Also wasn't this already done as a tv series?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0837565/

I'm very upset about this decision from ABC. Scrubs' ending was as perfect as any show could be and went out on a high note. Now they are dredging it back up, and for what? More money that they're not going to see since all the fans are going to be upset. I wouldn't have minded so much if they did the spinoff people were talking about, but calling it the same show with occasional appearances by the original cast is just disrespecting the show.

*Rumour* ABC may purchase the rights to recently cancelled shows My Name Is Earl, Pushing Daisies and Harper's Island. NBC have renewed Southland and Heroes but Next Season may be the last for Parks And Recreations, Friday Night Lights and Law And Order:SVU

The caption above says 'Scrubs given new lease of life'. Er... no, ABC. You've dug up a corpse. Big diference. You just don't do that. I'm tempted to boycot ABC once Lost finishes next year. You can't get your money if we aint watching.

Prieure you talk some sense. the ending to Scrubs will now be ruined thanks to the moneyu grabbing bas***s at abc well done you tools.

    May 19, 2009
  • Prieure

Why bring back Scrubs? A perfect ending will now be ruined forever. It was done, go out on a high, now it will be brought back and will never be as good as that last series. Just another example that networks are in it for the money and not the good of a show. At least change the name to Scrubs Interns or something, if JD is not in the vast majority of episodes, it is not Scrubs.

I'm glad Better of Ted was renewed - it's a pretty good show

Well, I will give Scrubs a shot since I always loved it, but not sure what it'll be like without JD fulltime. Castle -- another good move by ABC. They learned what FOX didn't, keep Nathan Fillion on the air.

    Yay for Castle!

I'm not so sure about Scrubs being back. The end was perfect.

  • edmasterchaos

Hope they make it that this season is an utterly un-related story to Scrubs, as in only taking place in the hospital and having new characters to fill the spots.Since J.D. will only be in 6 episodes i doubt he'll have a major role in the season, maybe just ease us in to the fact that it's pretty much a new show that takes place in the same place and time as Scrubs.

WHAT! Dude that finale was picture perfect! WHY RUIN IT!

    May 18, 2009
  • dragon22a

While I love the show, I think that this kind of ruins the finale that we got. Hopefully they will not ruin J.D. and Elliot.

    May 18, 2009
  • CrazyBarry

Why would they renew Scrubs? When a show produces the perfect ending, has clearly run it's course, and sprints over the finish, you what... extend the finish line?! They just layed a big old meaty chud on top of the perfect ending. Thanks a bunch ABC, for bringing back a show 'because it made financial sense' what a great reason to bring back a show! Bravo! You've outdone yourselves!

I am so angry at ABC... First they canceled Pushing Daisies, now they're going to ruin Scrub's perfect ending. Fortunately they only have Lost left from my favorite shows!

JD always was the anchor holding that show back.

I'm not going to watch a ninth season of Scrubs after such a perfect ending. Maybe Bill Lawrence should look into something new.

I wouldn't have minded seeing Scrubs end. I love the show but was more than fine with it being done. I will watch it next season though. Congrats to Better off Ted and Castle.

Let Scrubs die. Why do the Yanks always have to drag a series to death? Why not just stop it while its still good? (Ok Scrubs hasn't been its best for a while, but the point still stands).

As for Castle and Better Off Ted, I'm more then happy they've been renewed - Ted espcially.

    May 18, 2009
  • kylebryant50

The ending made up for the last two horrible seasons. Why can't they just go out the right way, now the show will have a bad ending or canceled mid season. This show has run its course.

    May 18, 2009
  • bigpapachuck

Are you kidding me. Scrubs ended perfectly, there is no need for it to go on. Scrubs is like Brett Favre, just stop and let's remember the good times

    May 18, 2009
  • ShadowHawk0393

This is the most unnecessary renew ever! The ending was perfect and now they're going to ruin it
