It's good to be J.J. Abrams. The producer has been polishing his Midas touch in recent years, adding the success of Fringe and a big-screen Star Trek reboot to a portfolio that already includes Lost and Alias. With that kind of track record, it's no surprise that networks are fighting over his latest project.
Abrams' new script heads back to the spy world -- where he found success with Alias -- and follows a husband and wife who work together in the field of espionage. We're going to go out on a limb here and and guess that things aren't what they initially seem -- and that the spies will end up chasing smoke monsters in another dimension.
Today's trades are filled with news that NBC has emerged as the front-runner for landing the project after the script started a bidding war between the major networks. ABC, which airs Lost and was home to Alias, is also said to be trying for the show.
If the script ends up becoming a series, J.J. could be the producer of three of the biggest shows on television, all on different networks. But where will his new program fit on the J.J. Meter?

The man really does have the Midas Touch. As a 'showman', he really just needs to put his name on something for it to get good buzz -- and this one seems right up his alley.
He is so overrated! I liked alias, but the end was horrible. I like lost but i think the end will be totally nonsense. And Fringe is good but resemble alias in so many wasy! Why another mistery-prophecy-conspiration-parallel-universe show? Do something REALLY different!
I WANT J.J.'S NEW SHOW TO GO TO ABC, SIMPLY PUT IT'S BECAUSE I AM BIASED. I'VE BEEN AN ABC FAN THROUGH THICK AND THIN SINCE THE MID-TO LATE 70S (AMERICAN BANDSTAND,HONG KONG PHOOEY,MISSION MAGIC,THE BRADY KIDS,THE SUPER FRIENDS,A.M. AMERICA,GOOD MORNING AMERICA,PASSWORD,SPLIT SECOND, CHARLIE'S ANGELS,HAPPY DAYS,LAVERNE AND SHIRLEY,MR. T AND TINA,SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK,AFTERSCHOOL SPECIALS, VEGAS,SOAP,BENSON, MORK AND MINDY,FANTASY ISLAND (BOTH VERSIONS),THE $10,000.00/$20,000.00 PYRAMID,ROOTS, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA,DONNY AND MARIE,WORLD NEWS TONIGHT,NIGHTLINE, FRIDAYS,GROWING PAINS,THE WONDER YEARS,PERFECT STRANGERS,MOONLIGHTING, MacGYVER, HOTEL, FULL HOUSE,FAMILY MATTERS,20/20, WORLD NEWS NOW,PRIMETIME LIVE!,WHO'S THE BOSS,ROSEANNE,THE PRACTICE, DHARMA AND GREG,ALIAS,GRACE UNDER FIRE,MY WIFE AND KIDS,THE VIEW,DREW CAREY SHOW,WHOSE LINE IS IT ANYWAY?,GREY'S ANATOMY,DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, UGLY BETTY).THOSE ARE JUST A FEW EXAMPLES OF WHAT THEY'VE BROADCAST IN THE LAST 40 YEARS OR SO THAT I USED TO WATCH AND I'VE BARELY SKIMMED THE SURFACE OF SATURDAY MORNINGS ON ABC.THAT IS WHY I WANT THE NEW SERIES TO GO TO ABC,BECAUSE HE OWES IT TO ME.THAT'S MY STORY AND I'M STICKING WITH IT.WILDmoreless
That I agere with, he's arguably the best producer in the market.
He is pretty much a genius!
Fringe is a great show
New show from J.J. I am excited!
"Three of the biggest shows on television, all on different networks." He can't seriously be talking about Fringe as one of those? It's doing TERRIBLE in the ratings.Unless he means "biggest" in a different way.
Alias was a great show in its first two seasons. The time in which, not coincidentally, Abrams was heavily involved. Then he wrote one episode for Season 3 and went on his merry way to other projects, which was exactly the time in which Alias went to hell. So, really, Alias is FAR from a dig at Abrams' career. Let's try not to forget that it's where his career really flourished (Felicity be damned).
I've always liked Abrams work(Even ALIAS until at least the final season) but I'm worried that with all these major projects running at the same time he's going to burn himself out rather quickly and have to commit himself to a loony bin.
To bring up Alias is more of a dig at Abrams' than anything. The Abrams' of the Alias era is 'hopefully' long gone. If shows like Lost and Fringe are what we should expect from Abrams in the future then bring it on.
Abrams is amazing but he can't save NBC noone can
Actually, Jericho was CBS and Alias was ABC, not NBC. NBC DID kill Life and five hours of opriginal programming for the Leno show. They also decided to pit Heroes against HOUSE! Clearly the bosses at NBC aren't the brightest crayons in the box. But every network, no matter how great has screwed quality shows. Rome and Deadwood were cancelled by HBO for budget reasons. Fox... Firefly, Terminator and so on. As for this new show, JJ Abrams, I love you, you're one of the most creative minds in the industry, but this halfbaked Mr and Mrs Smith knockoff is really phoning it in.
At least if NBC gets it we'll get to see all the episodes on dvd if it doesn't get the fame following it deserves. NBC always churns out their shows on dvd. ABC does not. They just cancel em, and they're gone. Whoever gets it, needs to make sure to keep it on the air at the same time, same day- none of this hide and seek to find when your shows are airing. So stoked. I miss Alias- good Alias like Season 1 and 2.
You are so wrong.....NBC killed tv with the 5 hours a week of primetime Leno. If any station is to keep a show it has keep the viewers and not start for a month then go on a break for 4 months. That is how they killed Jericho and that is how they killed Alias. The show needs to play all the way through on the same night and same time every week if you want it to have a chance.
id rather watch this show on nbc. abc is not good keeping a "hit" a hit on it's second seasonfor example: PUSHING DAISIES, OCTOBER ROAD, MEN IN TREES, SAMANTHA WHO?, those shows got at least 8-10.5 viewers on it's first second season, but the viewers dropped to 5-6 million viewers per episode, abc always cancel good shows after a sudden drop out on it's second season.nbc will keep the show no matter what if the show has a huge fanbase. so ill say nbc should get this show
He has hardly nothing to do with Lost anymore. Fringe is hardly one of the biggest shows on television.
I agree go ABC!!!
XO XO
:):):):)
Yeah I somehow feel he belongs on ABC for some reason. If none other than NBC sucks and will most likely ruin it. Looking forward to anything from JJ though, love all his work so far.
The ideal solution would probably be that The CW airs the show since that network is struggling so much and also because Smallville and Supernatural may possibly be ending in the next couple of years.
ABC better land this show! If NBC gets this show. It will ruin the show! It belongs on ABC.
