On Sunday, October 2, Reality Bites star Janeane Garofalo will enter The West Wing. The vocally leftist actress will take on the role of a media strategist hired by Democratic candidate Matt Santos (Jimmy Smits) to advise him on his presidential campaign. Her advice will, of course, cause a bit of contention within the Santos camp--especially for Josh Lyman (Bradley Whitford).
Garofalo, who launched her stand-up comedy career in 1985, first tasted fame as part of FOX's The Ben Stiller Show, a short-lived but critically acclaimed sketch comedy show that was canceled after just one season. She went on to earn two Emmy nominations for her work on The Larry Sanders Show--where she cemented her image as a smart, politically aware woman with a sharply acerbic wit--and put in a short and unhappy stint on Saturday Night Live.
After her experience on SNL drove her from the small screen, Garofalo made a smooth transition to a film career. In addition to Reality Bites, she appeared in movies such as Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion, 200 Cigarettes, Wet Hot American Summer, The Truth About Cats & Dogs, and many more. She's also made guest appearances on TV shows like Seinfeld and Strangers with Candy, but networks failed to pick up the pilots for two comedy series that she would have starred in.
The West Wing's seventh season will premiere September 25 at 8:00 p.m. The series has been moved from its longtime Wednesday timeslot to a new position on Sunday nights.
