The Hollywood Reporter said today that L Word star Jennifer Beals is joining the cast of The Grudge 2, a sequel to the American remake of the Japanese horror film Ju On. Beals currently plays Bette Porter in lesbian drama The L Word, which airs on cable channel Showtime.
Beals first came to fame as a "steel-town girl on a Saturday night" in the film Flashdance, where she played a welder with dreams of being a dancer. She then starred in the short-lived series 2000 Malibu Road and appeared on Frasier before landing a part on the controversial drama The L Word.
Beals joins other TV actors in the shadow of The Grudge: Sarah Michelle Gellar, of TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, starred in the original remake, and Gellar reportedly appears briefly in the sequel (presumably meeting an untimely end). Former Joan of Arcadia star Amber Tamblyn plays the lead in the film.
The Grudge told the story of a vengeful spirit who carries a "grudge" against anyone who comes into contact with it. The Grudge 2 will again be set in Tokyo, and Takashi Shimizu will return for directorial duties. The sequel delves into the secrets behind why the grudge is so angry.
The original US Grudge earned more than $100 million domestically. The Grudge 2 hits theaters in October.
