Jesse L. Martin is out of Order

When a show has been on for as long as Law & Order has, turnover is not only expected, it's guaranteed. Today, word broke that another actor has decided to leave the long-running show, but this time it isn't a simple journeyman using Law & Order as a springboard--it's an actor who has been on the show for nearly a decade.

Jesse L. Martin, who plays Detective Ed Green, is leaving the show after nine years, says The Hollywood Reporter. Martin will reportedly film one more episode of the show and see his character written off, before pursuing other projects--including playing Marvin Gaye in the upcoming feature biopic of the legendary singer.

With Martin out, Law & Order producers are said to be "in final negotiations" with K-Ville's Anthony Anderson to fill the void. Anderson's proposed character would be partnered up with Jeremy Sisto's Detective Cyrus Lupo, who joined the series this year.

The potential casting of the talented Anderson, while good for Law & Order, does not bode well for K-Ville. In fact, it pretty much guarantees that the post-Katrina New Orleans-based cop drama won't be back for a second season. Fox has yet to officially cancel the show.

Law & Order is in its 18th season and airs on Wednesday nights on NBC, with the last of its prestrike-produced episodes airing next week. The drama will return with new episodes April 23. For more on the program, check out TV.com's previous coverage.

Anderson didn't get it done in those last few episodes, but I guess we're stuck with him. I would like to see Cutter's character developed a little bit - he definitely breathed new life into the show.

I know I'll miss Det Green. He's my favorite after Lennie Briscoe. I feel the same way - that he was a link to the past, and now that he'll be gone, I just don't know. I didn't like Anderson's character in SVU, so I'm glad it's not the same charcter.

L&O finally got the combination right with Green &

Sisto. I did like Anderson on SVU, so maybe I will get use to him on L&O. we'll see.

I will really miss Martin. I don't think Anthony Anderson is a good fit for the show. They should look to more action orientated actors like Roger R. Cross (Curtis Manning of 24),Carlos Benard (Tony Almeida of 24) ,or Michael Imperioli as Det Nick Falco or John Leguizamo who was excellent in Spike TV's Kill Point as Mr Wolf. There are a lot of excellent action stars out there that could fill in Martin's shoes and keep this show fresh for another 9 seasons. Either way I'll continue to be a fan. Although I think the show has become a little bit tame and needs more hard hitting action drama. I miss the Two hour episodes or crossover shows with the cast of other shows making appearances.

yeah, if it wasn't for S. Epatha Merkerson and Sam Waterston, I'd quit watching after Jesse leaves. There's no one else I like on L&O anymore, it started going downhill with the new actors once Dennis Farina left, I had just gotten used to him taking over Briscoe's spot.

I will certainly miss Jesse Martin. He is one of my favourite characters and I enjoyed his relationship with Sisto. It made the show really enjoyable to watch and I shall miss that rapore that they had. Maybe they will have to bring him back.

Urgh. I hate the way Sisto's character is being written. He tries too hard to be friendly, and the dog thing was cheesy. Can't we get Chris Noth's Logan back? Speaking of Logan, I miss the magic that Logan and Briscoe had.

Man, this sucks! While I understand wanting to move on after that much time, the show won't be the same without him. I have no idea who Anthony Anderson is, but I really like the cast they have this season. It's the first season where I've watched every episode, instead of just catching it when I could. I'll definitely miss seeing him on the show every week.

No way! I don't like Anderson. He's too much of a comedian for a serious role like L&O. I like Sisto though. I hope he is around as long as Martin was.

Finally the cast was perfect and now Jesse Martin has to leave? Dang, why couldn't they have brought Sisto on a season earlier instead of having Milena Govitch. I respect Martin's decision to move on... but why do it when the show is 'on top' again, man!

I hope this isn't a big mistake for L&O.

Will miss Jesse Martin but the addition of Anthony Anderson will be good!

Law and Order has no symmetry the characters always mix and match and Anthony Anderson has done way more than Kangaroo Jack come on now.

Anthony Anderson would be a great addition to L&O. Having said that I would HATE to see that happen because I LOVE K-ville! It is one of the best crime dramas on TV. Please don't cancel K-ville. Find someone else to fill in for Martin (who I love and will miss).

Anderson? really? surely they could find someone better than the guy who played in Kangaroo Jack?

This isn't exactly new stuff here people. We've been hearing rumors about Martin leaving since last summer. And as far as symmetry goes, Half of the stars of L&O and the franchises have had a bit role before getting a starring role. Epathia, Jerry Orbach, Ice-T, Tamara Tunie, Eric Bogosian, Ect.Ect. Ect.. My wife and I refer to some of the actors that contimue to work on the show playing different characters as the L&O players. Some of these actors have done more than a dozen episodes and never played the same character. There is a joke among actors in NY that if you just live in the city long enough you'll get a part on L&O.

I despised Anderson on "SVU". I'm devastated that Martin is going--please don't add insult to injury by casting Anderson. There are so many better actors out there!

I feel the same way about losing Lenny's last partner. It's like the end of a legacy. I love Ed Green too, he's adorable, funny, and fast- mind and body... I've never seen K-Ville but I think I remember Lucius Blaine and I am liking Jeremy Sisto in this role (oddly- I've always recognised Sisto since his part, 13-ish years back, in Clueless)... I'd say the only thing of concern to me is just that they are pairing two relative newbies together here... which on L&O I haven't seen too much. But it's true, when your show plays for 18 years, you have to keep letting in new talent and letting the seniors go too, eventually....

L&O is known for their lack of symmetry. This season alone they had an actor play a judge one week and literally the next week he was a murderer.

Anthony Anderson's awesome, but Martin and Sisto have really hit it off this year, it'll be weird having another new guy in there for us to get used to. Lucky Anderson's such a talented actor. I wonder if he'll play the same character that teamed up with Stabler on SVU a couple seasons ago. Hmmm.

I also like the suggestion of using a character from Homicide on Law and Order, this would be a great way to see Clark Johnson back infront of the camera as Detective Lewis.

Wow that will quite a pair on L&O. I really like the intensity that Anderson brings to the roles he plays.

Jesse leaving is bad, but you do have to move on sometime. Also if Anderson comes in, I hope he's as good as he was when he was on The Shield.

Why not bring someone over from the other shows that share the same universe of Law & Order? Those shows being The Wire, St. Elsewhere, Homicide, Chicago Hope and The White Shadow?

And if they were digging up T-NBC actors why not get Danso Gordon and Wesley Jonathan? Since they were recently on shows that had better ratings than K-Ville?

This stinks! I didn't like him in SVU. I really do like Sisto, and the New E.D.A.! But, I really want Martin to stay!

I love Law @ Order shows. The plots are great. Two other reasons I watched were Jerry Orbach and Jesse L. Martin, who I had the privilege to meet and have a picture taken with during a taping in Dobbs Ferry, NY. As far as I am concerned, He made the show!!!!!! It will never be the same!!!Don't think I'll be watching once he leaves!!

That sucks. Jesse L. was great. I'm not really too thrilled with Anderson joining, but I'll give him a shot.

Didn't Anthony Anderson play a cop on Law and Order SVU? He played Detective Lucius Blaine. Shouldn't that be his character on L&O... I mean symmetry people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
