Jimmy Smits, Cool Dude, Joins Fox's 24: Legacy Pilot

Fun fact: the addition of Jimmy Smits to any cast automatically makes any project cooler, even when the project in question is Fox's latest attempt to cash in on an established property because they've run out of new ideas. The actor, who was the best thing about the final seasons of Sons of Anarchy and who will next be seen in Baz Luhrmann's The Get Down on Netflix, has joined the cast of 24: Legacy, according to Deadline

The potential series, which dares to star someone other than Kiefer Sutherland because I guess he finally decided he had more important things to do, follows Corey Hawkins (Straight Outta Compton) as Eric Carter, a soldier who returns to the U.S. embroiled in a terrorism plot that forces him to ask CTU for help in saving his life and obviously stopping the most devastating terrorist attack the entire universe has ever seen. Smits will play John Donovan, a powerful U.S. Senator with bigger political dreams, a role which should probably come easily to Smits given the fact he already played a member of the House of Representatives running for president on The West Wing.

The pilot also stars Miranda Otto, Anna Diop, and Teddy Sears.

What do you think of Smits' casting? Does it make you mildly more interested in watching 24: Legacy if it goes to series?

I have seen the trailer for this new spin-off series for the first time recently. While I plan to stay open minded about it and do intend to watch it, I have some reservations about it already. Jimmy Smits' character is a US Senator who hopes to be elected President of the United States. This is painfully obvious recycling from the first season of "24". I hope this new series is not just a rehash of what has been. The series should try to find its own identity. If the producers think that recycling will bring the die hard "24" fans in, I don't think this is a good idea on how to do that.

Genuinely surprised he never popped into one of 24's 9 seasons. Lots of folks did.

I find it funny that both the Bourne-less Bourne movie and the Jack-less 24 contain the word "Legacy". Tempted to say they should have chosen a different word to go with 24 in the title.

Sounds like good casting. And in fact, a lot of the casting sounds good. Teddy Sears, Miranda Otto. And supposedly the actor hired to play "new Jack" is a very impressive up and comer. I'll give it a shot despite my gut feeling that 24 is Jack/Kiefer and its unwise to do anything without him. I still don't feel like they should have done this but the longer they go on with the charade I start thinking about Howard Gordon and his track record. He's now been able to replicate the general theme of this show several times; specifically with Homeland and now Tyrant. So I'm starting to have faith that maybe, just maybe, it's possible to pull this off.

Here's a fun fact.....this series is scheduled to run for only 12 episodes......so it should be called "12", not "24"......This show is literally HALF of what 24 used to be, and it hasn't even started yet....

24 means the action in one season takes 24 hours not 24 episodes, like the last 24 season, this one will the same and will take 24 hours just one episode will be 2 hours

Zedaz, with respect, I've been a 24 fan since day 1. Literally. The concept of "24" is that the entire season takes place in 24 hours and all events occur in REAL TIME. Aka....1 episode=1 hour=1 actual hour in the 24 hour timeline. That's why EVERY SEASON of 24 was...wait for it....24 episodes!!

The ONLY exception to that was the 24 revival, "Live Another Day", in which FOX decided to be lazy and only order 12 episodes (probably because they weren't sure how it was gonna do), so the 12th and final episode took place over an entire night, and thus breaking the "events occur in real time" thing.

Also, there was the made for tv movie, 24: Redemption, which was meant to bridge the gap between seasons 6 and 7, where the movie was two hours long, events occurred between two actual hours, and events occurred in REAL TIME.

Conclusion......what made 24 the legend it is today? This....

"The following takes place between XX:XX and XX:XX. Events occur in REAL TIME."

Oh, and Keifer Sutherland as Jack Bauer, being bad ass, shooting first and asking questions later, with an obligatory "damnit!" and "We're out of time!!" AT LEAST once per episode....

After all of that, I maintain that a 12 episode season of 24 isn't real 24. It's 12.

Nothing was broken. There was simply '12 hours later' thing. So nothing happened 'over' 12 hours, meaning we still did see events occur in real time. Also, you, or anyone else really can't say whether a show will be good based on number of episodes. There were really crappy seasons/parts of seasons even with Jack. It all comes down to plot, and all we can do is wait and see. No one, not even creators, 'know', whether this will be good.

I loved Kiefer as Jack as much as any fan, but he moved on. This isn't the first time a show has replaced a beloved character. Watch the first two episodes before you write it off altogether. Bauer is gone, hopefully his Legacy lives on...

This project is like a flower. It needs nurturing in order for it to grow.

I agree with Kaitlan and others that the addition of Smits to anything makes it automatically better, but I just don't think the project is going to work. A dead pig wouldn't be any less dead if the dress were prettier.

I like Smits, this casting doesn't increase my incredibly low interest in this project however.

I'm so over all the remakes and movies turned into tv shows and vice verse. I guess originality has died

I like Jimmy and I'll prolly give this show a chance - but they should have found a way to get Keifer in it in some way - even if just in a few eps. Oh well whatever...

the daily show with jon stewart gif

What ever you try to do to lure me in to watch this I just will not. I know Fox has scrapped throuth the barrel into the one below it ideas wise but just leave the series till Kiefer is ready to come back or you have the sense to let Yvonne lead it.
