Kiefer Sutherland Will Play the President in ABC's Upcoming Thriller Designated Survivor

Kiefer Sutherland is returning to TV as the kind of person Jack Bauer once protected: The 24 star will play the president of the United States in Designated Survivor, a thriller that has received a straight-to-series order from ABC, Deadline reports.

On Designated Survivor, Sutherland will play a lower-level Cabinet member who is appointed President after a terrorist attack during the State of the Union address kills everyone ahead of him in the presidential line of succession. This is exactly the type of thing Jack Bauer wouldn't let happen.

There is another project called Designated Survivor—the term used for a member of the Cabinet who is hidden away in a safe location when the president and other top officials are gathered in one place so that there's someone to take the reins if there's a catastrophic event such as this—in development at Fox. Since ABC has picked up Sutherland's Designated Survivor straight to series, the Fox project will probably be affected.

Do you think Jack Bauer would make a good president?

Anyone seen the 2003 film Phone Booth, where Kiefer was a terrorist?

Kiefer is getting on now so time to go from one killing machine to paper pusher politician (who has had a serious promotion!)

I think you've misunderstood Fox they don't have an upccoming show called 'Designated Survivor' it refers to their schedual! When everything has been canceled or burnt off they've allways got the Simpsons!

I really like this premise. No Fox will go ahead with its project. The television landscape would be barren if networks scrapped shows that sounded similar (or identical) to shows on other networks.

So will there be a lot of loud whispering?

I'll watch it because it is Kiefer Sutherland but if it turns out to be as boring as Touch then i will give up on it

Shame this isn't a cable production, as then he could swear and be more realistic and not so restrained. George Bush swore more on TV than Kiefer's been allowed to of late.

I think Jack Bauer would be a very bad president in real life.
I think he would be a very fun (as in "I prefer my television with lots of gunfights and explosions") president on TV. ;)

Hasn't Kiefer done enough tv? Why try a third time? Shouldn't he be out starring in big budget action films? He strikes me as perfect for leading roles. So what's the problem?

How many episodes in before he takes someone down?

None. Because in the promotional clip he would have already taken down tourist wandering from the White House tour.

They should get President Palmer or Charles Logan (the actors, not the chars) to be his VP. I still don't get how he's gonna torture people and defuse bombs if he's the actual president though.... maybe Chief of Staff Chloe O'Brian could do it.. (Just bring back 24 instead already!)

What is it with all these terrorist attack shows. Don't we get enough of that in the daily news? Geez....

Films and television like to reflect the real world. And it usually works well for them.

Die Hard and Olympus Has Fallen are examples of that.

It is cool how Kiefer Sutherland is still getting acting gigs. But it's a shame 24 got cancelled. Actually, I think Kiefer should play a secret service agent assigned to protect a president.

He's already played a Secret Service Agent in the movie The Sentinel. It had Michael Douglas, Eva Longoria and him in it. I'll check this show out. I liked the first season of Touch. "JJJAAAAAAKKKKKKEEEEEE!"

24's not dead-----yet. They're trying to continue without him. (Yikes!; better hire a great ringer) I myself would like to see them change it into a film series.

I'd like to see Rupert Friend from Homeland take over 24 along with Yvonne Strahovski who played Kate in season 9.

I kind of feel like they need someone with a lot of name recognition in order to be able to sell it to an audience that gets distracted easily. That would be the best option.

I think Friend would be a likely possibility considering the two shows are made by the same people and Homeland is something of a spiritual successor to 24.

The whole point of 24 was that it was a story told over 24 hours.

But that concept isn't as hip as it once was. And at some point it gets to be a constraint that gets in the way of the writing. It's much more about Jack Bauer than the time clock.

or you could just create a new show and don't spoil what 24 once was.

Keifer was actually offered the chance to come back and do more 24 like the mini-series they just did - but he declined.

I don't know, I think perhaps I'd like to see Donald Sutherland as president instead.

Ironically, I'd like to see what President Kiefer Sutherland would do if he had to decide the fate of a rebellious agent like jack Bauer who had no respect for protocol and causing so many problems in a single day. I mean, quoting Peggy Gerhardt (Fargo), now that the foot is in the other shoe...

The title just made me think of a line from "The Last Seduction". Maybe the Fox project could borrow that instead? ;)

I wonder what Secretary he is going to be. If they do Homeland Security, he could still be a badass and be the president.

The log line says he will be a "lower level" Cabinet member, so I highly doubt he'd be someone so prominent as Secretary of Defense or the head of Homeland Security.
