Prince closed his Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic album with a quote from Ghandi: "2 my mind, the life of a lamb is no less precious than that of a human being."
That quote, some album liner notes about the ills behind wool production, and a strict vegan diet convinced thousands of voters to pick the artist formerly known as a symbol as the world's sexiest vegetarian in an annual online poll from animal rights group PETA.
Prince, 47, follows in a line of musicians that have won the award in recent years, including Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, Andre 3000 of Outkast, and American Idol winner Carrie Underwood.
Prince will share the award with Kristen Bell, the 25-year-old star of Veronica Mars, which is being carried over from UPN to the new CW Network this fall.
"I had a hard time disassociating the animals I cuddled with--dogs and cats, for example--from the animals on my plate, and I never really cared for the taste of meat," Bell said in a statement. "I always loved my brussel sprouts!"
Runners-up in the poll, which PETA said received more than 40,000 votes, include Natalie Portman, Desperate Housewives star Nicollette Sheridan, and Joaquin Phoenix, who played Johnny Cash in the movie Walk the Line last year.
In making its announcement, PETA called Prince "a symbol of humanity and an artist of compassion" because he "won't eat anything with parents."
