Labor Day Weekend Picks: A Whole Lotta Marathons

  • 8comments

It's Labor Day weekend, and the airwaves abound with reruns, marathons, and movies. Need to catch up on The Office? TBS has you covered. Can't get enough NCIS? USA's got your back. Mad Men fans can breathe easy, because a new episode airs on Sunday, but HBO devotees will have to wait a week for True Blood, Hung, and Entourage to return. And don't forget about the U.S. Open, either! For tennis fans, CBS is the go-to spot.

Here's what we'll be watching ...

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4

4:30 p.m., WE

Saturday Night Fever

John Travolta was hot -- and his moves were even hotter -- in this guilty pleasure '70s dance flick. Who cares if it's playing on a Friday night? The Bee Gees are awesome any day of the week.

7 p.m., DSC

Under New York

This special program goes beneath the surface of New York -- literally. Two engineers trace the watershed system in New York state and find out what's going on underground.

PLUS:
Jockeys, 6 p.m., ANIMAL
Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?, 8 p.m., FOX
Chefs vs. City, 10 p.m., FOOD

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 5

3 p.m., A&E;

The Matrix

Choose the red pill with Neo (Keanu Reeves) to understand the truth -- at least for a few hours, anyway. You can also catch The Matrix Reloaded at 8 p.m. on BRAVO, and then complete the trifecta (there's an hour of overlap -- set the DVR!) with The Matrix Revolutions at 10 p.m. on MTV.

11 p.m., HBOsg

Alice

If you happen to have HBO Signature, check out this South American import, which is loosely based on Alice in Wonderland. It focuses on the life of a woman who moves to Sao Paolo, Brazil to learn more about her family -- and herself. The premiere episode, which already aired in Brazil, is appropriately titled, "Falling Down the Rabbit Hole."

PLUS:
Wizards of Waverly Place marathon, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., DISNEY
Total Drama Island marathon, 12 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., CARTOON

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 6

10 p.m., AMC

Mad Men

Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) is getting a new roommate, Don (Jon Hamm) is standing up to his father-in-law, and a new client is coming to town. And so the Season 3 changes keep on coming ...

10 p.m., ABC

Defying Gravity

It's Halloween aboard the Antares -- which causes the crew to experience hallucinations and hinder Goss (Andrew Airlie) from spreading the word about the crew's mission.

PLUS:
Big Brother, 8 p.m., CBS
Shark Tank, 9 p.m., ABC
There Goes the Neighborhood, 9 p.m., CBS
Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami, 10 p.m., E!
HGTV Design Star, 10 p.m., HGTV

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7

7 p.m., BRAVO

Inside the Actors Studio

So what if Jason Bateman was on Letterman, like, Wednesday night? He's awesome. And, quite simply, interviews are always more interesting in the hands of James Lipton, who seems to get feistier with age.

10 a.m. to 12 a.m., SPIKE

Band of Brothers marathon

Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks executive-produced this Emmy-winning, 10-part HBO miniseries back in 2001, but it's still as epic as ever. The sweeping visuals and the intricate relationships illuminate the experience of World War II.

PLUS:
Whale Wars marathon, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., ANIMAL
NCIS marathon, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., USA
Gangland marathon, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., HIST
Real Housewives of Atlanta marathon, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., BRAVO
The Secret Life of the American Teenager marathon, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., ABC family
Dog Whisperer marathon, 11 a.m. to 12 a.m., DSC
Law and Order marathon, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., TNT
HGTV Design Star marathon, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., HGTV
The Office marathon, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., TBS
The Secret Life of the American Teenager, 8 p.m., ABC family
Greek, 9 p.m., ABC family
The Rachel Zoe Project, 10 p.m., BRAVO
