Law & Order: SVU: Richard Belzer Will Return as Detective Munch!

You can't close the case on Munch! Richard Belzer, who played original Law & Order: SVU character Detective John Munch, is returning to the franchise to say hello to his old pals, says Entertainment Weekly. Belzer will guest star in the Law & Order: SVU episode "Fashionable Crimes," which is scheduled to air in May.

In the episode, Munch will weigh in on the case of a young model who claims she was preyed on by a famous fashion photographer. He and Fin (Ice-T) will then work together to lock that scum up for good. DUN DUN

Belzer's character retired in Season 15 of SVU in 2014, but it was always assumed that he wouldn't leave the franchise for good. Prior to SVU, the character of Munch (also played by Belzer) was featured on five seasons of Homicide: Life on the Street

Are you excited to have Munch back on the case? Or should he be playing golf in Florida?

Is Munch going to appear on Dick Wolf's Chicago shows? He's been on all his other shows.

I am excited, Munch was (is) my favorite SVU character! He was great on Homicide and as a guest star on one episode of the X-Files as well. I'll probably make an effort to watch this episode, haven't watched new episodes in a long time. Prefer to stick to the older ones, first few seasons.

It will be nice to see Munch again. I'll actually watch that episode. I always liked the character, he was one of the best parts of SVU. SVU went downhill drastically after he left.

For me the show went downhill the moment everything revolved around Beson and Rollings and it became more about their personal lives than the cases.

I always thought Munch and Fin were the best characters on the show. The two of them together have great chemistry. I can see them doing a comedy or dramedy cop show...

I'm so excited about Munch returning but I wish it was permanently, not just for one episode. And I really need Stabler to come back!!

Good. Always happy to see old characters brought back instead of new ones, even if it is just for an episode

"excited"? No, I don't "excite" so easily. He's a good actor & Munch was a well written/acted character.

Great news I loved the character Munch on both SVU and H-LOTS. I never knew if it was by his choice or the SVU writers to not use him more. The episodes where he was featured were very good(imho) Using some of the secondary characters once in awhile in a feature episode might breathe some new life into these old shows.

SVU is a great show with Kelly Giddish & plenty of life left!

Kelly Giddish's character is the worst police officer in the whole world.

I sort of like Rollins now, but I have to agree. When she was undercover, she really was about to cross the line with Declan before she knew he was a cop. And we can't forget her gambling addiction and all the nonsense with her sister.

WoW, thanks for bringing up the great memory! The episode that led to becoming UC with Declan was my favorite ever SVU episode! She was sizzling hot in that episode!

LOL ben45tpy. I highly doubt that, but she's gorgeous, fun/funny, interesting. (Meloni was terrible; thank goodness he's gone - both the actor & the bully character who often used excessive & outright force).

You know, he came back once before. He bailed Amaro out of jail.

I remember that. He was so supportive. I love Munch.

Yeah! I love the character Munch. He sort of jazzes up a scene what with his wit and dry sense of humor.

I hope he convinces Fin, who has had very little screen time this season, to retire.

I'm always muttering "Where's Fin?" when I'm watching lately.

Such a pro. I loved him in both shows! I'll be there to welcome him back. Just one ep, eh?

I didn't realize that he wasn't on the show anymore. And also, Munch has been in everything, even The X-Files. I think for his retirement he should just go from TV show to TV show playing the same character, just randomly popping up for no reason.

Doesn't he have the record for playing the same character on different shows?

I second that! It's always fun to see him where you least expect it, like The X-files and Arrested development. My first choice right now is Daredevil!

That would merge the Marvel Cinematic/Televisual(?) Universe with the Law & Order/Homicide: Life on the Street/Chicago shows universe, which also includes shows like The X-Files, and most importantly St. Elsewhere, which implies that all of these shows/movies only exist in the mind of an autistic boy called Tommy Westphall. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Westphall#The_Tommy_Westphall_Universe_Hypothesis

Considering Xfiles is/was on FOX, and Marvel Cinematic Universe is part of ABC, and the others are NBC, it would be pretty hard to have them be part of the 'Tommy Westphall Universe.

Well Munch has jumped networks before so it could happen.
